Simple, Smith is a defenseman who couldn’t crack the top 6 on a bad defensive team this year and probably can’t roster next year. Look, Stall is no bargain either but he is a better defensive option and he played top 6 all year. The coaches clearly see Staal as a better option and if he is used properly (bottom pairing) he can contribute.

Coaches and organization clearly feel like they owe Staal something for all his years of service.

He was our worst defenseman from the new year onwards. He is a liability even on a bottom pair.

when would a Staal buyout be worth it? not that I have any issue with forcing him off the ice, but when would it be to our advantage?

also just drop Pionk like a rock. Him and Staal were the wonder twins 2.0 this year.
It would be worth it now for a couple reasons, to open up cap space and because there are 3 LHD already on the roster who are better and Hajek who was impressive in his short stint could very well make the team.

Buy outs are a way to get cap relief
Cap relief is useful for contenders

We aren't contenders.
Buy outs are a good way to create roster space for good young players on ELCs instead of bad players on bad contracts.
Good young players are useful for a rebuild.

We are rebuilding.

To me it’s not Smith vs Staal if we are talking immediate buyout (or trade, god willing). It’s Smith vs Shattenkirk, especially after bringing Fox over.

Why are we clearing cap space now when we don't need it just to add dead cap space 3 and 4 years from now when we might need it?

i watched marc staal all year and can confidently say he is one of the worst D in the league so I'd harshly disagree with him having more value than smith unless we were intentionally tanking.
Are you comparing Staal's performance at D with Smith's performance playing approx. 7 min a night on the 4th line? How does that work?

Staal > Smith is not the hill I want to spend any amount of time on. I don't think either should be bought out, and I hope both can still be moved.

Not buying it, he hasn't done all he could to move those players I mentioned and buy out Staal.
Let's try this again. Maybe one day you will respond to a question.

What would you do different? And more importantly how? And do you have any idea of how the salary cap works and what dead cap space is and how it affects said cap?

Please try to respond and enlighten.

Here’s a question for the Pro Panarin crowd.

Our greatest fears come true and he starts declining at 30.

So, in year 3 of his 7 year contract he falls victim to Father Time and his production drops from the 80 point range to the 60 point range.

What do you do? What can you do? He’s locked up for another 4 years with a NMC absorbing 13% of our teams cap.

What happens if he produces 70-80+ points throughout the term of the contract?

Both have an equally likelyhood of happening

why can't we just send smith to hartford or staal to the press box if hajek & lindgren are both ready? gets the kids in the lineup without the dead cap space in future years...

the 'need' for a buyout is basically having no trust or faith in quinn to make the right decisions so get rid of guys so he has to play your guy by default

It's amazing that people are still complaining about the rebuild AFTER landing Kakko/Hughes, Fox and another first round pick. Really fantastic stuff here the last few weeks.
I am not really seeing complaining. I do see one incredibly uninformed poster.

A buyout for Staal or Smith wouldn't be very expensive, but unless a ton of our D prospects are pushing for NHL time and theres no other way to get them onto the roster I don't see the point. A buyout next season makes sense since it only tacks on a bit over $1 mill the following season, but again theres no point unless we need the roster space.

The coaches respectfully disagree.

I don't see any reason for them to buyout anyone. They don't need the cap space.

They have plenty of non waiver eligible players who probably help make the Pack at least decent. The AHL needs to be a better environment, putting all the good prospects on the Rangers is not going to allow for a winning one. They should have kept more prospects down last season. If they did not because the environment there was poor, that is a problem that should be addressed. Rushing 19-20 year old prospects into the NHL to shield them from a poor AHL experience is not a good situation for a rebuilding team. Neither is keeping them at the NHL level just to show off their rebuild.
They can use the cap space in a variety of ways. If a player has no value to the team or cannot be traded, why not but them out? It becomes an under utilized asset. The cap hits are more than manageable. It's not like we are going to need cap space in 2020-22.

I don't think a 1.2M cap hit is going to hurt us especially if you take a look at the Rangers cap sheet for the next few seasons.

Maybe - but we still don't need the space NOW and we're not contending next season. Either trade Claesson's rights or trade Pionk for whatever you can get. Keep Smith as a 4th line forward.

Left Side: Skjei, Staal, Hajek

Right Side: Shattenkirk, DeAngelo, Fox

7th: One of Claesson or Pionk
