Not buying it, he hasn't done all he could to move those players I mentioned and buy out Staal.
So I'm looking at Alex Petrovic on hockey reference and I'm seeing a guy who hovers around 50% CF% and 50% FF% for most of his career and yet people say he is a horrible player. He had a rough year last year due to injuries but he's 26 years old, 6'4 and plays with an edge to his game that the team lacks on the back-end, all while being a RD.
Meanwhile, Marc Staal is hovering around ~42.5% CF% and 42.5% FF%.

I realize Staal's play has not been the best, but wouldn't Petrovic then be an improvement, for little cost (just cap dollars) over what the team has on the roster and bring an added element the team lacks on the back-end as well? What am I missing?
He had an awful year this year but before that he's been ok. I mean if he's free then fine but I wouldn't pay anything for himSo I'm looking at Alex Petrovic on hockey reference and I'm seeing a guy who hovers around 50% CF% and 50% FF% for most of his career and yet people say he is a horrible player. You think people are lining up for Vesey?yes, but the trade should have been Dallas' 2nd rounder + Vesey, nobody would give them more for question mark Fox.
where I am with this as well, although I think there's a case to be made that buying out Staal would be worth it. Buying out Shattenkirk is idiotic, and Smith is still one of the 3 best LHD on the roster.i'd keep both Smith and Shattenkirk unless a good offer with no salary takebacks comes.
neither of them are nearly bad enough to actively try to get rid of. Staal is but I'd rather just keep him than buy him out and let him stink up the ice.
when would a Staal buyout be worth it? not that I have any issue with forcing him off the ice, but when would it be to our advantage?where I am with this as well, although I think there's a case to be made that buying out Staal would be worth it. but what is the justification for buying out smith, especially if buying out staal is not an option? The question is not can the Rangers afford a buyout on defense this (and in future) years, the question is who. This year, Smith is the obvious choice. Next year, I’ll let you know.
This doesn't make a lot of sense, because Staal > Smith.where I am with this as well, although I think there's a case to be made that buying out Staal would be worth it. Buying out Shattenkirk is idiotic, and Smith is still one of the 3 best LHD on the roster.
Sad thing is, he’s not the only one that does it. I see Pionk and Andersson in proposals by posters known for disliking them."Here's this player I don't like. Let's include them in trade proposals because other GMs will obviously LOVE to acquire him"
Didn't want to create a new thread, but after people were positive about the previous one, here's the one from yesterday discussing, among other things, Panarin coming to the Rangers (potentially)
I am really curious to hear what you guys think of the intro
Simple, Smith is a defenseman who couldn’t crack the top 6 on a bad defensive team this year and probably can’t roster next year. Look, Stall is no bargain either but he is a better defensive option and he played top 6 all year. The coaches clearly see Staal as a better option and if he is used properly (bottom pairing) he can contribute.but what is the justification for buying out smith, especially if buying out staal is not an option?

“Pionk is awful”, ”Pionk, Andersson and scraps for Trouba!”

How is Fox more of a question mark than the nameless draft picks you are so upset we gave up for him? He lead all of college in points per game as a defensemen. He might not amount to much but hes certainly more likely to than another 2nd round pick.
At the very least he has proven he can dominate at the collegiate level which makes him less likely to be a complete bust than whatever is behind door number 2nd round.
Once JD is announced as the president, I’m sure there immediately will be questions pertaining to Panarin. A small chance there will be a categorical response to give an insight one way or another because I’ve felt bad for this dead horse for awhile.
Would rather demote Smith or keep him as a 13F than buy him out. Also, if Detroit is extending McIlrath, someone out there has to be ok with Smith at the right price/in the right deal.Simple, Smith is a defenseman who couldn’t crack the top 6 on a bad defensive team this year and probably can’t roster next year. No he's not, but agree to disagree because I won't convince you and you won't convince me.This doesn't make a lot of sense, because Staal > Smith.
