Honestly, I don't know if I wouldn't take this reasoning as having some merit. Our arena atmosphere is probably well below average compared to other playoff teams'.

I have been to 11 NHL arenas, and in terms of atmosphere, I would rank it 10th ahead of Buffalo. I love attending games at MSG, but if I wasn't a Rangers fan, I couldn't think of a single reason to go more than once.

I think it’s been not as loud is the dragon was slain in 1994. 94 and before it was very loud. Winning the cup took some juice from the fans. They still want to win of course but it’s not as loud. Also I think the blue seats are less now after the renovation. Imho.

It's just a product of ticket prices soaring and the renovation changing the acoustics of the building.

The atmosphere is pretty bad at MSG but to be completely honest, it's like that across the league. I've seen the Rangers play in 24 different arenas (including MSG) and most are pretty bleh with the exception of some standouts like Vegas and Montreal. Even places like Winnipeg were pretty quiet though it was an afternoon game.

Yeah, the only NHL arena that comes close to European games in terms of atmosphere is probably Vegas. I had friends over from Florida and I took them to some games here in Austria and in the Czech Republic. They couldn't believe how loud it was. Singing and chanting from start to finish.

It's the consistent price increase for tickets. Too many suits there and not enough blue collar fans getting after it!!

That is an often heard excuse, but I think it is the layout of the arena as well. Fans can't sit on the glass. Fans can't even go down there for warm ups unless they have special tickets. Madison Square Garden creates a litteral distance between players and fans.

Gosh, I feel like MSG sounds so much louder on the broadcast than every time I watch the Rangers play on the road pretty much anywhere out west, but perhaps that’s a product of non-rivalry.

I'm not familiar with how renovations affected acoustics since I go more regularly now but I did go to a playoff game against Ottawa in 2012? and the atmosphere was electric!

I’ve been to playoff games in at least a dozen other arenas in recent years and this is far from true. The Garden is no longer the noisiest but it’s in the top quarter. Washington the loudest I’ve recently been in, Minnesota and Arizona the quietest. Haven’t been to a playoff game in Vegas but am sure that is the loudest.

Since I have had tickets, would say the loudest I have heard MSG was:

Jagr ENG goal to finish Atlanta
Rosi double ot goal vs Buffalo
MSL Mother’s Day Goal/Hagelin goal in that five minute span or whatever it was.
MSL goal vs Montreal
Buzzer to end the ECF
Steps goal vs Washington to end the series

And the loudest would be when they went down 3-0 to the Devils, tied it up, and in typical Rongos fashion still lost.

The loudest I ever experienced was in 1994 when Messier tied it up in SCF game 5. The earth was shaking over a block away from the garden and you could hear the roar, it sounded deafening. I wasn't actually inside.

The "loudness" of the arena is like 99% arena acoustics/building design and 1% who the fans are.

This is simply not true. If it was, MSG would be the loudest arena. It's built to be the loudest, with the way the ceiling was constructed etc, but it isn't.

I was there for game 3 vs Montreal 2014 when Kreider tied it up in the last minute and game 5 vs the Caps 2015 when Kreider did the same and McDonagh won it in OT and the place was a mad house.

Arena atmosphere is entirely circumstantial and I never understood why people complain when it’s not constantly “loud”. Like, it’s a Tuesday night game against the Florida Panthers, no doy the place is quiet.

MSG is not really an acoustically great arena.

That being said, loudness does not necessarily mean acoustically good, so I digress...

No it's not. There are lots of articles how the acoustics at MSG are really bad whether it's for hockey, basketball, or music. European arenas can get much louder despite less fans because they are for the most part much smaller so the sound waves don't have to travel as far. The capacity of SHL arenas averages around 7500.

Also if MSG was built to be the loudest that would no longer matter as it is the oldest arena in the NHL. So all 30 other arenas were built after it and could have been build to be louder.

I looked into it myself after the question came to mind.
What Should Someone with T1D Know about Having a Viral Illness?

  • Having T1D does NOT make you more susceptible to contracting COVID-19.
    • Current evidence suggests that individuals with well-managed T1D are NOT at higher risk of contracting COVID-19.
    • Experts further say that if someone with well-managed T1D does contract COVID-19, they are not necessarily at higher risk of developing serious complications from the disease.
    • Those at greatest risk are people with consistently elevated blood sugar levels and those with a second chronic disease (such as heart disease or lung disease).
    • For a detailed explanation, please read this blog or view this video from leading national endocrinologist, Dr. Anne L. Peters.
    • If you have T1D and do become ill, with any virus, you must take special care of you and your T1D (see below).

I just copied and pasted from jdrf.org, which essentially the foremost T1D research and education resource. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but these days, without citation I’ll stick to what’s published and reputable.

That’s not meant to be an attack. You may be right. I’m the farthest from an expert. But I at least bothered to do some research and share what is published from a reputable source. There’s an over abundance of people on the internet nowadays who will post “that’s not true” without anything to back up the claim for me to take those posts at face value anymore. Not because of you, but because it’s so rampant that if I listened every time I’d end up misinformed and with conflicted information 90% of the time.

I've never been to a game at MSG, so I can't comment to that. I'm sure it is an amazing atmosphere to be a part of.

I can only speak to how the games appear on tv, and we're nothing special in that medium. I don't think we hold a candle to Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Nashville, Vegas, Washington, Minnesota, or Winnipeg; but after that, yeah maybe we fit in with other playoff atmospheres.

Obviously arena acoustics play a big role, but this is some crazy hyperbole.

If you took the sociopaths that go to Habs games and chinch them into any other arena, they'd also shake those rafters.

One reason...If you were in one of those challenges where you had to spend a million bucks in cash in like an hour (we've all been there, amirite), I cannot think of a better place to do it than MSG.
