Okay... no one is arguing that contract is irrelevant. If you can’t grasp that contract is not a factor when we’re arguing over which player is CURRENTLY the better defender than I have no real interest in talking to you. We’re not arguing which is the better value, which is worth keeping over the other. We’re talking about two performances that have already been completed and which was superior. One being superior but overpaid versus one being very good on an ELC is, in fact, irrelevant, because it’s not a discussion about the cap, which to keep, which is more bang for your buck, etc. If the question is, who is better currently, between Trouba and Lindgren, and you have chosen Lindgren, you’re wrong. That’s really the end of it. Whether Trouba is overpaid or not, he is still currently better than Lindgren. The end.

A great reply. So show me Trouba is better. It's not the end, it's the beginning of a real discussion.

I think what @KirkAlbuquerque says and what you’re saying both apply. The offense is great and the attacking system is right. But they need to get better at playing fire drill defense too. And I’m sure they will. Fox is already really good at knowing when to transition back to defense and he’s good at reading the play in the neutral zone. Just need the rest to get there with him.

It needs to get better, but it doesn't have to get to lock down trap mode either.

Honestly with the goalie they have and the offense (which honestly, stands to only get better) they need to be league average or slightly above.

Their PK is f***ing sucks balls too. That needs to get better in a hurry and really the pieces we need for a good PK are probably going to have to come from elsewhere.

wonder if the winners of a three game series will be more in sync than those waiting around.

edit - looks like they won’t be waiting around.

Losing in the play-in round wouldn’t be the worst thing, either. Would probably slot in at 8-15. Could be on the higher end if some lower seeds advance. Presumably, if the draft is after the season, they will draw 3 teams with no max on moving up.

Sure... Trouba is a veteran of over 450 NHL hockey games who by the age of 24/25 had convinced NHL GMs he was at least a 7-8M defenseman. He’s put up 50 points in this league, which isn’t exactly something that happens by fluke of luck for defenders, and averages 23 minutes of ice time per night. He plays a ton of minutes with the toughest matchups and toughest zone starts of all our dmen (statistically/factually) and, this year - his first on a new team, new system, first year of being relied on to be THE guy, learning his teammates, learning a new scheme, adjusting to different usage, etc. - he put up 27 points in 70.

Ryan Lindgren is a 22 year old with 65 NHL games in his lifetime, averages 16.5 minutes a night, has posted 14 points in that span and has had easier/more favorable matchups and zone starts.

The two aren’t even in the same conversation right now, unless you’re taking to deluded Rangers fans who can’t separate cap hit from actual ability. Trouba faces tougher competition, more defensive zone starts, more PK minutes and did most of it stapled to anchor D partners rather than a Calder level Adam Fox. Lindgren played 16 minutes with favorable matchups and didn’t hold Trouba’s jock in a one to one comparison. The only way you can bring Trouba down to level the playing field is by saying “but his contract” and again, in a comparison of raw ability, that’s not relevant. You can say he’s overpaid all you want. Overpaid and better is still better.

Losing to Carolina? LOL

Watching an old Rangers game from 2008, Staal can play out his last year of his contract and retire a Ranger.

I guess if we knock Carolina out, and Columbus takes out Toronto, that's a better scenario.
Totally escaped me too. That’s not totally impossible. A healthy CBJ wouldn’t be a pushover. Still not sure how high those 19 and 23 slots Would go if Toronto and Carolina both had very early exits. All depends on what the league decides. Probably some teams slotted 8-18 in the draft would have to advance pretty far to have those Carolina/Toronto slots become more lucrative.

I totally agree. I'm fine with him as the 7 rotating in every other game or so to help a rookie along. I know the cap is a thing. But frankly, I'm pretty reticent to buy out Staal or Henrik. And I think Smith is a coin toss. He played good defense this season. If there team feels he would only be needed as a forward, though, maybe a buyout makes sense for everyone.

Getting old sucks, and to see these guys have one last hurrah is fine by me, Rangers aren’t winning a cup next season, and it’s only good to have veteran players around for the young guys to help shape them up for the future. The future is scary because you really don’t know what will happen.
