Fox's game is just oozing so many subtly amazing plays. He doesn't overpower other players, he just reads the play and puts himself in the way. If you can't appreciate all of the subtle things he does to break up plays and prevent others from forming, then you will never like him. Can he get better? Absolutely. Most of that will be with increased strength. Is he perfect? This is the NHL - all defensemen get burned at times.
I have been incredibly surprised at how well rounded his game has been. I thought he was going to be much more one dimensional. He has icew water for blood. The kid has so much composure.

Let's ask this question. Just looking at the UFA d-men this season, not even the RFA's, what do we expect them receive if they hit the open market?

Torey Krug - His final year on his contract had him making $5m
Alex Pietrangelo - His final year on his deal had him making $7.5m
Justin Schultz - His final year on his deal had him making $6m

Seeing that there has been a lot of talk about Trouba today. In one of the matches this winter where Rangers got a double minor. Trouba was penalty killing for almost 4 minutes. A shift or two later you could see he was fatigued, he made an error and the opposition scored. You could blame him for it. I dont. I blame Fox or DeAngelo for not beeing able to PK. I had not watched Trouba that much in Winnipeg, so was a little unsure of what he was. He has his warts. But without him this season Rangers would have been a far worse team.

All three guys we have on our right side are a different player. I noticed multiple times this year that Trouba seemed slow pivoting and got burned, but his physicality, PK skills and style are just something that this team hadn't had on the back end and I personally appreciated it.
DeAngelo brings the most dynamic offense I have seen on the Rangers in my short lifetime. I've watched since 2009 so really only a decade, but you can tell Tony is something special. We don't need him to PK, we need him as that elite offensive force from the backend he was this season. When Lundkvist is ready to play in 2-3 years time, DeAngelo can move to the left, he's shown he's capable of playing there.
Fox was incredible this season. He's the epitome of a two-way force as a defensman. The creative breakout passes, the positioning, the skating, the vision, the offensive awareness. He was our best RHD as a rookie and he will be elite for years to come.
For years we complained about our right side after we let Stralman go, Boyle couldn't find youth when he signed, when Girardi started a decline (although he got hate he didn't deserve) and when Smith couldn't play on his off side the way he did in 2017 playoffs. Why tear apart a good thing just because we're nitpicking?

a short trip north will indicate our self appointed daily correction officers clarified the Rangers didn’t have a cap in 2002 and i should have clarified payroll for them. Hence, the response to 75 games to Captain obvious.

Orbit beyond a post.

I like Trouba but for me it's not expectations its that Fox's talent immediately translated which rightfully landed him and Tony ahead of Trouba on the PP, that's not a problem but it's going to limit Troubas production. So instead of a 50 point guy your probably talking about a 40 point guy. This doesn't take away from the fact that Trouba eats tough minutes and is a physical beast but he lacks that top tier shutdown ability. It's not that Trouba isnt a good player it's just that you paying a guy franchise defensmen money that probably won't match the production level or have that upper echelon defensive ability.

If the conversation is about keeping him vs not keeping him obviously the problem lies with projecting the future cap hits of the squad. You move him, you lose a much needed element to a small D core but still have an Uber talented blueline. You keep him, you retain a big physical veteran presence but your probably gonna lose a talented player because of the cap

Good post, but you’re straying from the pissing contest we’re trying to have. If I was a Mod I’d give you a warning.

Do it again and I’ll report you.

7, 9, 3 Would be my AAV guesses.

This seems...dumb?

Seems more like an issue from the coaching staff if anything.

the coaching staff protecting young players until they are ready to handle the role even if it hurts the team in the short term or makes trouba 'look bad' for a shift isn't a problem with the coaching staff. it was a rebuilding year. that's why trouba is here and has more value that many seem to think, its not just his play on a bad defensive team with little support. he is allowing fox and deangelo to develop which hopefully will pay off down the road with a deep and balanced blueline instead of worrying about one top guy.

I am amazed by Fox, really. But at the same time — he had his by far worst stretch when TDA was out and he became the goto guy on the PP etc.

We need to shelter these guys too. It’s about being able to do it in the long run.

I also think we vastly underrated how deep the lows can be for players that aren’t ready for a a role but thrown into it anyway.

Many Ds struggle and never really recovers. Think it’s essential to keep these guys in roles they are ready for. And not to underrate how tough it is for those who plays them.

Quinn didn't run Trouba into the ground on the PK. He consistently used 4 D on every penalty kill. If he was out there for an extended shift, they probably were stuck out there.
