I agree whole heartedly with your assessment of Gunler. The character issues are over blown and though he occasionally struggles with passivity and decision making, his defensive play got better as the season went on.

The wild thing is that if the public perception of Gunler continues, there is a strong chance he is available for NYR’s second pick in the first.

In my experience, public perception doesn't always carry over to how GMs feel. If Gorton picks Gunler at 13, I already know there will be complaining about how "we could have drafted him later" but you simply don't know that. Rankings are arbitrary and I feel GMs have a pretty good understanding of what other teams are after. Scouts see each other all year round, all over the globe. They stay at the same hotels, take the same bus to games, are often on the same flights. I'm sure in casual conversation certain prospects come up.

My dream scenario would be:
Gunler at 13
Hirvonen/Amirov/Jarvis at 23

Regarding him missing the WJC: William Nylander didn't play in the WJC in his draft year and he turned out fine

That is an interesting way of putting it and picking your prospect

2 years ago I had a feeling we would go for Kravtsov, and I was so happy. I hope I can be right about Gunler this year
Patrik Stefan (two first names, wtf) certainly doesn't sound the part. And I was right!

Pretty much every athlete that works in Bristol, CT for ESPN hangs out in West Hartford. Same with all of the Hartford University kids. The bar/restaurant scene is actually pretty popular.

I think you're grossly misinformed about the area. Point is, it's not the black hole you made it out to be and probably one of the better places to play in the AHL.

West Hartford is gorgeous. My Sister and her family live in West Hartford while i have a few clients in the West Hartford Medical building. West Hartford downtown is basically two short roads though and the few bars are packed only b/c the City of Hartford is dead. Hardly “grossly misinformed” and i can see how a 19-21 yr old from another country could struggle. I think he could have handled this better but not sure what’s going on in his head. All we know is he was playing video games, depressed and left.

That was my point. I'm saying that people are already trying to classify Holloway as bad pick because they see the his physical play listed as a key attribute. Similar to the way people decided Tkachuk wasn't worth a top-5, or even top-15 selection in some cases because scouts were putting too much stock in his physicality.
You knew that this was going to be the case. The second some people hear terms like "physical, 200 foot game, big motor, high floor," the assumption becomes that it is a "safe" prospect who is limited. It will be same for Holloway. And Lundell for that matter.

That being said, all it takes is a team in the top 10 taking a defenseman like Sanderson early or being put off by someone's size to have some players with elite potential available in that spot. I'd have a hard time taking Holloway with players like Raymond, Quinn or Perfetti still available - no matter how many dimensions he brings.
Raymond, yes. Perfetti, maybe. Quinn, no.

I think you bank on them picking where they are slotted right now. As such, he would be a good pick.

Though I may be one of those that would take Sanderson ahead of him.

I didn’t realize Hartford was a dump lol, I always thought Connecticut was beautiful & where all rich New Yorkers had summer homes.

You're thinking of the coastal towns like New Haven and whatnot

Everything West of Bridgeport is Fairfield county which is the equivalent suburb of Manhattan as Westchester, but located in Connecticut. New Haven is a decrepit place that people would be scared to go to if Yale weren't constantly expanding within it (I should know, it's my hometown). The Eastern shores are the beach houses, Rhode Island-like vacation spots. Rural Connecticut is quite beautiful. Urban Connecticut, almost as a rule, is a trash heap. Hartford... having lived on the South Side of Chicago for a couple years now, I'll say with some confidence that it's among the worst and least pleasant cities in America.

Of course, the Hartford suburbs are nice, but the reality is that winters are cold and dark, it's largely families and older folks who live there, and in any case, it's not somewhere that would make a 20 year old from Europe forget about NYC.

Personally, I gtfo of CT as soon as I could. This was actually the only goal of my first 18 years of life lol. It's a beautiful place to retire, and is mostly a nice place to grow up or raise a family. If you're not doing that though...

American 18-22 year olds spend 4/5/6 years at college in some of the smallest, shittiest towns/cities in America. Why are we suddenly concerned a hockey player (with far less free time than a college kid) won't last in Hartford?

I used to think Albany was a cool place at 18.

Hey, as a graduate of Siena, I can say that Albany WAS a cool place!

Anyone heard from @RangerBoy ?

Larry Brooks of the New York Post wrote that the NHL is considering a 24-team Stanley Cup Playoff tournament this season. They will go directly to the playoffs. No regular season games. No fans. Ridiculous. He said that there will be two options for the seeding. One. Two. The top 12 in each conference. The top six of each division. One of the two. In the first option the Rangers would be the 11 seed. Not good. First round exit. Bad Draft Pick. No lottery. In the second option the Rangers would be left out for the Buffalo Sabres. Would they be in the lottery then? Bottom 7. There are good prospects this year. They're saying this is a great draft. One of the best drafts ever. And believe me, I've seen some great drafts. Did you see the 2003 draft? Eric Staal. Ryan Getzlaf. Zach Parise. Ryan Suter. This one could be just as good. Alex Lafreniere. Quentin Byfield. Tim Stutzle. Lukas Raymond. Alexander Holtz. Marco Rossi. Cole Perfetti. Anton Lundell. Jamie Drysdale. Noel Gunler. Dylan Holloway. Yaroslav Askarov. Connor Zary. Jan Mysak.

Pierre LeBrun reported Bill Daly, the deputy commissioner of the NHL, said they are still working on plans for the draft. When will it be? What will the order be? You people are always in such a rush for information. He says there is no rush. When they figure it out they will let everyone know. "There is no urgency."
