31 Thoughts: The Podcast - Sportsnet.ca

Notes from 31 thoughts podcast: Friedman on chances Dallas re-signs Zuccarello: "I think they're very reasonable. They love him... He's been huge for them. Put it this way: when I've asked, I've been told, don't dismiss it. I think they're decent."

On what the Rangers' summer will look like:
- It will be an "interesting" summer, want games to start to matter.
- With big markets out of the playoffs, cap might not go up as much as was thought
- Rangers will want good players from teams in a cap crunch.
- Re offer sheets: They could conceivably drop the condition on the 2020 pick to Carolina (make it strictly a 2nd) if they needed to use the third in an offer sheet.
- Rangers will be "using all their muscle" to improve this off-season.

Seeing a lot of bickering here since the Fox trade.

If I told you a couple months ago that next season we'd have Kaapo Kakko, Igor Shestyorkin, Vitaly Kravtsov, and Adam Fox in our lineup...what would you say?

Don't get greedy. We're doing amazing.

But what about that 10% chance our third rounder would turn into Dominic Moore? I mean, we haven't drafted an NHL player with a third rounder since Moore in 2000, but the tiny odds of losing out on a 4th liner are clearly not worth getting one of the top 3 RD prospects in the league.

A 3rd round pick can be anything. It can even be Dominic Moore!

Buchnevich and Duclair, but I agree with your overall point.

No I mean what do you do with 3 goalies? Is it true there was a rumor Shesty doesn’t wanna start in the AHL? Or is that fake news? I remember seeing something about that on here a while back. If it’s not true then I would assume you leave Shesty in Hartford for however long and maybe when the time is right find a taker for Georgie or package him in a bigger deal. Sorry if I came off like a dick with the initial post, I really value your opinion on here and was curious as to what the approach should be.
Send one to Hartford. Probably Sherstykin. No one wants to start in Hartford but Igor has said it’s not a problem if he has to go there for a while. Sherstykin is a big boy and can probably use some seasoning in the AHL. If there’s a bona fide log jam by Christmas, then a deal of some kind may be forthcoming. There is time for Georgiev to solidify his market value and for the Rangers to get some piece of mind before anything happens. There’s also a chance of injury. Then there’s Henrik and what is he thinking. Lots to marinate here.

This is just my pure speculation, but I could see the Panthers and Rangers being trade partners to move up to that #13 spot, especially if the Jets pick falls at 18 or 19. Panthers trade back get some additional assets and take Knight in a better spot where he should go in the draft.

Say 19 and 27 (if Dallas makes it to the WCF) for 13. Take a Dman at 19 and Knight at 28.

If we want a first line C, #13 has a tiny shot of making it happen. Grab a big RD who can be a second pair guy. Trade Kreider this offseason. Next year, draft a forward in the top 5. It's a better draft, especially among forwards. Seems like a better strategy to me.

I hope Shattenkirk is fully healthy and turns it around next season. I still dig that he came "home" for less. If it ends up working out that's a great story.

Remember seeing an interview with I think Quinn. Was kind of hinting at Shatty being out of shape and having to change his ways a little. On my phone but I’ll see if I can find a link somewhere.

I remember that. Was thinking that was due to his injury. Regardless, I think it makes sense to give Shattenkirk a good shot at redemption. No need to rush Fox up to the parent club, anyhow. Could be a win-win.

They want games to start to matter. Doesnt sound like a team that is just going to sell off Kreider and not add any outside quality. Sounds like they will try to re-sign Kreider and/or bring in outside help to play with the bucket load of young prospects they have.

they want games to start to matter based on what? the media that claimed we'd be after big name targets last year claiming the same thing?

I think in a perfect world they would have if the kiddos last year other than ADA showed a big jump and signs they were primed to break out but since that didn't happen, they won't. I think this year they take a half-step back to take three steps forward the next year.

If the Rangers want the games to start to matter fix the defense because they won't matter a lick with the defense we currently have.

I don't think that this means they want to keep Kreider. They could still move him while adding other players.

It sounds more like they want to get quality players at a much lower price than they'd normally fetch (See: Fox) from teams that will have no choice but to move them rather than dive head first into UFA.

I think they just don’t want to essentially be eliminated from the playoffs by December

Malkin said early in his career if he could play anywhere else it would be for the Rangers. And sure enough now the rumors are he’d waive for the Rangers or Panthers (think he’s got a place in Miami)

Well yea I think that’s the plan but w Thad said IF and big IF they can get Trouba and move Shatty it’s big time improved

Skjei , Staal , Hajek or Lindgren
Trouba , Fox , DeaAngelo
Smith , Claesson , Pionk can spare or go

Gonna have to wait for Miller next year and try and move Staal then

With the offseason going so well already, I knew something stupid would pop up. I am so against this. 1) If we offer sheet someone, it will come back to bite us in the ass. 2)We will likely have to give up good draft picks during a rebuild, which makes no sense. 3) If a team can’t sign their RFA, the player likely wants too much, and we’ll be overpaying. 4) Don’t drop the condition. Fox will likely play at least 30 games with the big club, but still.
