Kreider is arguably the last piece that’s worth something. MAYBE if Shattenkirk turns it around this season and next, we could fetch a late 1st per 2020 deadline. We will sell off everything, Names, Vesey, maybe Fast stays on the 4th line for pocket change because I don’t know how other teams in the NHL even view the guy, we need to figure out what’s the deal with Strome, I think he’s the veteran stop gap for some of these guys contending for Center. The following year, Staal, Smith traded for really any spare pick, Shattenkirk will be the X factor. The year 2020-2021, the flips will stop, and I would think the Rangers will just hold onto their precious 1st round pick year after year.

To be clear, I’m not advocating to go through UFAs again. But go grab Panarin and call it a day and don’t look at UFA options moving forward. Go get one UFA for the rebuild of his caliber, and we’re done. 20m in cap this year, we can easily shed another 10m in cap this year while we have Panarin signed, and the following year there’s around 20m coming off the books including Hank. The Rangers will be able to sign all of their ELCs and players they want moving forward. Just don’t pull a Toronto move and sign a UFA one summer, another the next, and then the summer after all of your important ELCs are due a huge raise. Summer after summer of huge signings is where the trouble comes in.

Another issue Gorton must address is how he is to handle Staal, Shatty and Smith.

Two more years on those deals.

See Johansson is exactly the type of vet I don’t want because he’ll do absolutely nothing to isolate kids or be a good partner to play with. Toffoli will cost the same picks and prospects combination the Rangers will be after in Kreider’s trade.

But why wouldn't they just sign a guy like Johansson to insulate the kids a bit? Having a 2nd line play making winger around is not a bad thing especially if they move Kreider.

Toffoli had 34 points last year and makes $4.6m. I wouldn't pay much for him. Maybe swap him in exchange for someone like Vesey or Namestnikov or a 3-way deal where LA gets a mid-round pick and some other team gets Vesey/Namestnikov/fast and the Rangers get a year f Toffoli.

Agreed that if the Rangers go the UFA route, it should be very strategic and not be an annual thing for a rebuilding team.

It may not be an issue at all.

It really depends on what the plan is with free agency. If they’re committed to another couple years of drafting, building youth and staying out of the FA market than those 3 guys aren’t an issue at all. They’re just aging vets on a young team.

If they plan on trying to win soon, then they’re going to have to get real creative to try to move those contracts.

Here's a though that crossed my mind last night when I was up with a screaming infant:

To Arizona:
Chris Kreider + WPG 1st (assume this pick is at #20)

to NYR:
ARI 1st '19 + ARI 1st '20 + Lawson Crouse

So basically, the Rangers move up 6 spots this year to 14 and add Arizona's 1st next year along with Crouse. I would assume the cost to move up from 20 --> 14 would normally be a higher 2nd rounder.

Hawks had to trade a lot of pieces, but it’s truly sad and shameful that the Hawks couldn’t hold onto Panarin while they have Kane and Toews. That was such a terrible move by them. First Tuevo, then Panarin, absolutely gross.

That's easy. Buy out Smith now and wait out the other 2. Staal is still and functional bottom pairing guy and de facto captain. Shattenkirk has a chance to turn it around and maybe we can deal him.

We aren't competing til after they would be gone anyway.

Assuming Kakko gets inserted to the lineup immediately, what does everyone predict our lineup to be next season? Is Kratsov a given to make the team? I don't think we sign any FA's:

Kreider Zib Buch
Chytil Strome Kakko
Namestnikov Howden Kravtsov
Vesey Andersson Fast/Lemieux
Nieves

Shatty Skjei
Staal ADA
Hajek Pionk
Smith

You're clearly not considering the huge list of blockbuster UFAs who have given us sweetheart deals in the past.

Even when we got a huge discount on Shatty, it still turned out badly. There are very few others who came here at a discount. I mean, maybe a small one, but UFA salaries are so crazy, it doesn't feel like it.

For ex, a player who'd get $5 as an RFA is viewed by fans to be "fair" at $5, but maybe $6 by a small minority since he's a UFA. In real life when all 31 teams would like a first liner without surrendering assets and all bid for him, he gets an offer of $8 with a full NMC. Instead, he chooses the Rangers at $7.5 with a NMC for only 15 teams for 3 years and then a full NMC. This board explodes upset why we overplayed him so badly. Over the years, rumors come out that some players gave us discounts. Fans assume there are mystery players taking below-RFA contracts as UFAs. But it just means that Staal could've gotten money money as a UFA when he first signed, and certainly Hank.

It just doesn't feel that way because people refuse to acknowledge how UFA works: the team that signs a desired player is the one that offers him a contract that the other 30 GMs think is so crazy, they wouldn't take him for free with that contract.

And I agree that the chances of him reinventing himself to be a Selke winner is virtually zero .

Well wings don't win Selkes. The last one to do it was Lehtinen 15 years ago. You pretty much have to play center to even have a chance to win these days. Although Stone has a chance to break the trend this season.

We can parse wording all we want here. The chances of Panarin morphing and becoming a top defensive forward latter on in his career is virtually zero.

Gorton doesn't really have to address anything. No need to buy out any of those players. We might get lucky and find someone interested in a retained Shatty, but nothing has to be done.

His buyout is to make room for prospects to play, and the total is non-prohibitive if I remember correctly.
His buyout would open up a spot on the 4th line, which is where he has played a lot in the end. Sure he dropped back to D for emergencies, but the Rangers real problem on LD is how to get both Hajek and Lingren playing time with Marc Staal occupying a spot.

Buy him out and in 2021-2022 & 2022-2023, he will still count $1.1 against the cap. I think that Girardi's dead cap space compounds that.

I think that I am more coming to BRF's point of view. Play him on the wing, getting his 6 minutes and let him protect the kids. Unless the Rangers have another 4th line wing that they need desperately to get in (who knows what the multiple 7th rounders get), from a 4th line perspective, who is he blocking? Let him play and let's not incur dead cap space hits.
