If Torinto is fixated on a right hand defenseman, I just don't know where they are going to find (close to) equal value. I've never been a fan of Pesce. I'm not sure about Montour. Tough aisle to be shopping in.

Pesce has never done anything for me either. So overrated.

Y’all are crazily underrating Brett Pesce, but I’m not getting into that right now.

Nylander is worth a 10% contract, judging by the other 10% contracts out there. So is/was Pastrnak, if not more.

You’d give him an $8M aav (rounding)? What do you expect him to get paid?

Do you see GMs as the same when they try to put the screws to a player?

Is Duba screwing Nylander over by offering him 40m over the next 6 years?

Let's look at it like this: What if Nylander was our problem, and Gorton offered him that extension and Nylander was holding out? Would you be disappointed in Gorton for not caving in to Nylander's contract demands?

It is a business decision. I personally believe it is a very, very poor one but it is allowed and it is the path he is taking. IMO that doesn't make him a piece of ****.

Maybe calling him a piece of **** wasn't necessary, but this situation has definitely tainted my opinion of him.

I honestly don’t think it’s about the money. I think he wants out of Toronto
Ding ding ding.. I think this is it.. he may want to be the guy and look how many big names are oncurrent roster.

If Pionk is the guy they want I think you got to do it.. shatty would be great to but $$$ to much

I don't think $8m is unreasonable under the current cap. There are a bunch of contracts in that range that fit what Nylander is comparable to.

"Putting the screws to" =/= "Screwing over"
"Meeting a player's reasonable demands" =/= "Caving"

I wouldn't be disappointed in Gorton for not caving, nor would I be upset with Nylander. It's a business. It's the GMs job to put the screws to RFAs. It's the player's responsibility to themselves to go for the best contract they can get. I suppose you could say that I'd be equally disappointed in both sides.

I would agree that, to me, it seems like a poor business decision but none of us know the backstory on this either. Their could be a rift between him and management that is just now coming to a head. Who knows.

The Rangers should be scouring the league for guys who are undervalued. Teams who need cap space. Teams with young players who they aren't utilizing correctly. Nylander doesn't check any of those boxes.

That's not to say he wouldn't be a welcome addition to this core but at this point in the retool/rebuild I wouldn't give up multiple assets for him.

That isn't a bridge deal.
I'm talking about the 3 year/4.7M bridge deal he signed with the Lightning a few years back. Kucherov held out in training camp if you remember. Signed the bridge.

That's what I'm talking about. You settle on a contract. Play your ass off and work towards your next contract. Kucherov will make 76M over the next 8 season's after this. If Nylander doesn't want to sign a 6 year/40m extension, he should follow Kucherov's foot steps.

So the interesting thing in Toronto is, if Nylander gets a bridge, what do they do with Marner and Matthews? They just gave Tavares the moon. Nylander could, conceivably, be making $4m or more less than all (3) of those other guys. That would piss me off if I was him.

I was saying that the 6 year offer isn't a bridge deal. I haven't seen anything that says that Dubas offered him a 3 year deal anywhere.

I think this conversation will be interesting in a couple years when Chytil is coming off his entry level contract and is slated to become a UFA at age 26. It will coincide with Howden, Lias also ending their entry levels.

I mean it depends on what they all do on the rest of their entry levels yet if by that point the Rangers have used a large chunk of their cap space on stuff like Panarin and Nylander or whoever, while still carrying Zbad, Skjei added to whatever they've done in between(Kreider extension, Buch), is the argument going to be to put the screws to them or pay them should any of them be in the Nylander range at that point, especially given the Rangers will/should have much cap space coming off the books that off-season.

The Max Domi/ Alex Galchenyuk trade is a perfect example. Domi was dying in Arizona, now he's having a breakout year...

I don't disagree, but that's certainly easier said than done. The thing for me is that Nylander checks off some of the wrong boxes. He will cost a lot to acquire and it's unlikely that we'll be able to get him for some combination of players that we already plan to trade. He will cost a lot to sign. And, he may not have the same level of success here that he has had in Toronto. Maybe he would be willing to take a smaller number on a team where he knows he is going to have a prominent role, but there's a significant amount of risk there.

From Toronto's POV, trading with us doesn't make much sense. They need defense and we don't have it.

If Gorton can find a deal that makes sense, I'm not against it, but I don't think it's a slam dunk by any means.

The reference I made to Kucherov was that signing a bridge deal worked out in his favor, and then I followed that comment up by saying there are reports saying Dubas has offered Nylander a contract comparable to Pastrnak.

The article I read also suggests that a short term bridge deal is also an option.

I don't know. He's in a spotlight right now in Toronto, and a team trending way up. They have a very good young core. Nylander will also benefit greatly playing with Tavares or Matthews.
