You’re right these two players are pretty similar. One is an NHL defenseman...and the other is Brendan Smith.I dunno, but you’d have a hard time convincing me that we can’t move Smith if Pittsburgh can move Gudbranson
I mean really. Pittsburgh didn’t even have to retain. They just magically acquired 4 million in space
Gudbrandson is worse than Staal imo. He's an apocalypse. You’re right these two players are pretty similar. One is an NHL defenseman...and the other is Brendan Smith.
Hughes with a goal and assist in the 1st tonight. Must be nice when the coach gives you ice time to adjust to the NHL. Hughes looking dangerous out there. I guess in the 2021 season maybe Kakko will see 17 minutes a game.
For how long? Kakko had the 3rd least ice time among forwards...What’s your problem after last night? Kakko literally played on a first line with our 1C?

So after 2 periods it didn't work so it's over? We were winning the entire game.He was put in the position to succeed and it wasn’t working. The team was trying to get a much needed win so on what level there’s a need to force an issue? I personally didn’t see a situation to say “wish Kakko was there”.

Is there no patience with Quinn? Did Kakko have to score a goal on his first shift with that line?.
Will it be a real chance this game? Or another "we start him there and then bench him if he doesn't score a goal?" Will he actually get 17-18 minutes like his line mates?Who said it’s over? Kakko will get another chance, probably next game.

The one where he found the player on the opposite side and snuck it through 3 players? How was that not impressive lol. Unless you mean the goal (that was not impressive). Also, Hughes' assist today was absolutely LOL worthy and only impressive if you watch the boxscore.
Yes, the secondary assist on Vatanen being completely lucky Goligoski's foot was there. The one where he found the player on the opposite side and snuck it through 3 players? How was that not impressive lol. Unless you mean the goal (that was not impressive).
still a nice passYes, the secondary assist on Vatanen being completely lucky Goligoski's foot was there.
Sure. Lucky it ended up on the boxscore though. If it hadn't, would we be talking about it?still a nice pass

Either way, I don't think it's completely fair to see Hughes is just being "gifted" time, although the Hischier injury helped a lot. Looking at their fancy stats so far, Hughes has had a slight edge in raw/rel stats for the most part. He's also getting major sheltering from Hynes.
Don't blame me for NST being dumb with their column spacing. I hate it lol.

The TOI difference is not as different between the two as it's made out to be. And to be honest, in the top chances Hughes has gotten with NJD, he's made the most of it. Kakko so far hasn't, including last night.
But I kinda chalk that up to the fact that Kakko is simply coming into an environment that is more foreign to him than Hughes is probably walking into. And that's normally going to be the case for young players coming over from Europe, I imagine.
94% offensive zone starts for Hughes. That's some serious sheltering. But you gotta applaud the Devils for prioritizing Hughes and putting him in the best situations to succeed. Kakko getting some minutes with Mika is a good start but would like to see them stick with it even if it doesn't work at first and give him a chance to adapt.
5 minutes is A LOT in hockey....and kakko had that one game while Hughes had that time several games...Entering tonight, the line of Hall-Hughes-Palmieri had a whopping 5v5 TOI of....*drum roll*...13:04 over 8GP, compared to the 8:33 that Kreider-Mika-Kakko have had over the same GP.
Yeah. He has had tons more chances beforehand![]()
