With how things went in his last season here, I would say he would not want to come back to the Rangers. I'd argue that this is the last place he'd want to go to, with the exception of some locations that aren't desirable for a 32 year old winger that probably is seeking to go to a team that has a better chance at being in the playoffs.

Unless things go off the rails in Minnesota, I'd expect him to be there for a least the first two years of his deal.

Guess he felt like playing in the AHL wasn't in his best interest. Make much less money and he's not being prioritized down there either, spending a lot of time playing on the 4th line and being benched.

Why would it be any different next year? He's going to have to learn the same sort of things then that they want him to learn now.

I am all for pulling for these prospects, and wanting progress, but the whole development anarchy approach that some seem to favor is a bit over the top.

Kravtsov wasn’t benched because of some conspiracy against him. He was benched because he played like ass and wasn’t ready.

It’s okay if he needs more time to cook. Not everything is solved by just letting the kids play.

He probably rather learn in the big leagues while making decent money like Kakko is doing right now. Rykov was the same way, I don't see Rykov playing significant time in Hartford and he'd probably go back as well.

Rykov doesn't have an assignment clause this year.

Sure but that does not help with learning the Rangers organizational system and strategy and such. He's still going to have to learn all the next year and clearly they were not happy about how often he was just freewheeling on the ice instead of making a structured play.

I dunno, but you’d have a hard time convincing me that we can’t move Smith if Pittsburgh can move Gudbranson

I mean really. Pittsburgh didn’t even have to retain. They just magically acquired 4 million in space

eh yes and no, it's not like every KHL player has had to come in and spend a bunch of time in the AHL. A guy like Kuznetsov spent several years in the KHL and then came over and was OK.

He still has stuff he can get better at and he can still work on some things that the Rangers want him to. Being stronger, more confident, worked on his skills, etc, might mean he can more easily crack the team even if he still has things to work on.

It's not like this will be a lost year for him even if I do think he probabl ywould have learned more that would have prepared him for the NHL if he'd stayed. But maybe he gets to hone his skills a bit rather than practicing the dump and chase and that's a benefit in the long run. I dunno

Thinking out loud here...Last year Quinn left Pionk out to get savaged on the penalty kill. I wonder if that is why he is protecting Fox and Hajak so much. Of course at some point, he's going to have to get their feet wet.

Coaching development going on too.

And we are only what 8 games in? While it's not what we all invisioned when smith was signed it may actuall ybe good he can play that D spot on the PK and not throw a rookie into the fire.

That said I bet Fox would do OK

Some people just want to watch the world burn, @Edge.
