Andersson/Chytil/Howden all look like they should at least be top-9 players, we'll likely get a high-end center prospect in the draft, and probably keep Zib short/medium term so that the young guys aren't 'thrown to the wolves'.
That's 5 players for 3 spots. I know it's dangerous to count the chickens before they hatch, but what's the timeline people see for the Rangers either experimenting with some of these guys at wing, or looking for trades where they move at least one of them for a bit of help somewhere else within the lineup?

Again, you are missing the point that was being made.

No I got it, I just don’t think we need anyone to step up and fill those minutes for a “cup competitive team.”

His minutes are easy to replace.

We’ve seen some pretty shitty defensive groups win the last 3 cups. Pittsburgh 2 years ago especially since they were without Letang for their whole run.

The timeline is when (if?) these guys start pressing the issue. Making the move because you foresee it being tough down the road is always poor form.

Question I have is if we are looking to be a near lock for last come the TDL, what is the plan for Zibanejed coming into this summer with a looming NMC? We can draft a projected 1st line center and we have 3 candidates for 2 top 9 center spots in the system. That's a big bargaining chip for defense.

If you want to avoid another Stepan trade scenario, you need to make that trade in February... which makes a Hayes trade at some earlier point. Like November/December. Carolina and Winnipeg seem like the buyers here. Lottery protected 1st and Adam Fox as a starter would be huge.

I actually think Zibanejad is a long term commitment. Unless we have a glut of *top* caliber center prospects, I see Zibanejad as being a staple in this Rangers organization moving forward.

Hayes might not bring back a first. He really sucks this year.

I just touched on this, Zibanejed has a NMC starting this summer. Our hand is technically forced.

You ride him out because there won't be a zib/brass type trade to be had again for a variety of reasons, trading him will get picks/futures which doesn't line up with 20-21 beginning of our contending period

A young two way center with size and poise can survive a bad year on a bad team.
A young 2 way center who has arguably been the worst center and one of the worst players on a bad team in a contract year does not hold well for large rental returns. Though I suppose Hanzal brought back a 1st, Hayes really isn't doing himself any favors. Hes on pace for 30 points lmao.

Which I get (hence the chicken line), but you could argue that we're almost at that point now. Chytil needs better line mates (or to go back to the Pack), Lias could be called up soon, and all 3 of them (Chytil, Andersson, Howden) should ideally be playing more than 12 mins a night.
So do you start experimenting with one of them on wing sooner rather than later so that you can see what you've got; or if there's a deal centered around one of them for a winger like Nylander do you look to roll the dice early?

FWIW, Hayes' ear was photoshopped out on the team page which is kind of funny and irrelevant
Hopefully it won't impact his trade value too negatively.

There's enough interest from around the league I think. ELTE FRDM had a brief mention for him in the latest 31 thoughts. The added bonus of potentially signing Hayes to an extension and thus making him for than just a rental is something else to get a 1st.

I actually think that with a player in Hayes' position, teams will want the opportunity to negotiate for themselves, if we sign him to his ask some teams will decide that is too much for someone who is playing like he is, and without seeing him play in their system they won't want his contract.

Pens drafted top 2 4 years in a row.

That's true but 1) that includes the lockout year when they won the Crosby lottery and 2) they'd collapsed on all fronts--they'd let their core rot into old age and were doing a shit job of filling holes with good young prospect.

Gorton the last couple years has been restocking with high draft picks while keeping some of the core around.

IMO if the Rangers were to land Hughes or Kakko and with Chytil, Andersson and Howden already competing for NHL jobs and with a few others on the cusp they'll be more ready to roll than the Pens were after they got Crosby.

Oh they totally bottomed out which we're not doing here.

This is the only year where we have a legit shot at finishing bottom 5 IMO.

There's no way they could do that depth wise. 3 roster forwards on a team that already can't score outside of McDavid can't be replaced by Zucc + 2 AHL garbos.

Well I think the Hayes trade situation is a good one for the Rangers. You can and should retain- and that makes it easier to move him earlier on and get a higher asset in return.

That said, it's the retention alone that can net you a 2nd. Which is great... if you get that, and an NHL player, you've got a good return for a player that won't be worth the extension from a Ranger perspective.

WPG needs a center, but they've also got to re-sign a bunch of their guys... they can certainly do that, but the Rangers can help facilitate a trade that helps them out even further.

They like Perrault, he's a glue guy in their locker room, so I don't expect him to be traded.

But Kulikov?

They've got Niku and Poolman who can play now.

WPG also lost a very good player as the tax paid to get rid of Mason.

I would trade them Hayes, Fast & Claessen . Retain 50% on Hayes & Fast.

Kulikov, Appleton, Samberg, Gustafson & a 2nd.

WPG frees up $3.7M next year. Gets a 2nd line center for a run, a depth defenseman for a run, and a utility winger that can off-set a potential Tanev loss next year, while bolstering their depth even more this year.

Chevy pays a premium in Samberg. He's a gem.

Their farm can absorb it but it still doesn't sound like a Chevy move.

The Penguins failure to get anything of value out of trades of Jagr, Kovalev (from us ), or Straka and losing Lang for nothing destroyed that franchise in the early-00s.
