You do need some vets to help teach the kids the right way to be a pro. That really only describes Nash of those three guys.

You also need players on the team. Cant trade everyone. You just need to make sure theres room for the young players. Depending on how many players they jettison, I could be ok with a Kovalchuk signing just to make sure we have enough players on the NHL roster. Even in a rebuild, there are going to be prospects better served playing some in the AHL. Need bodies for the NHL.
 
To me, Nash, Grabs, Holden, and DD are no-brainers to get rid of and you'll probably get enough back for that lot of players to reset the farm system.

You listen on McD, Zuccs, Miller, Hayes, etc... and if there's anything astounding, by all means. If a deal doesn't knock your socks off, you don't make the trade.

The future already looks pretty good - Chytil, Andersson, Gilmour, Pionk, Graves, Lettieri, Nieves, hell, even Ronning. Add to that with 1st's for Nash, Grabs and prospects, etc.. and there's still a young enough core to build around.

D:

McD / Skjei / Shattenkirk / Staal / Pionk / Gilmour /Graves / ADA / Smith if he gets his shit together. That's really not a bad starting D pool if they're (hopefully) playing under a different coach/system

F:

Zibs, Hayes, Chytil (I think Andersson is another year away), Nieves/UFA
Zuccs, Vesey, Miller, Kreider, Buchnevich, Lettieri, summer UFA/UFA or prospect/prospect

G:

Hank
Pavs/George

We can be competitive/contenders quicker than you think just by jettisoning pending UFA's. Trading McD and Zuccs have to be outstanding deals, to me, to make that move. Particularly McD who will be hard to replace from our pool of D.

Do you really believe Nash and Grabner are taking one year contracts to get traded again next February?

Kovalchuk will be 35 years old. A multi year contract is a 35 plus contract. He was looking for reportedly $6M-$7M per for 2-3 years last spring.What’s the point? You aren’t winning anything with without him.

Making some big assumptions here but if they trade Nash, Grabner, Zucc, McD, Holden and DD between now and next season you have (not including who they possibly get in return and assuming the 1st round picks from last year are ready):

Kreider - Zbad - Buch
XXXX - Andersson - XXXX
Miller - Chytil- Hayes
Vesey - XXXX - XXXX

XXXX - Shattenkirk
Skjei- XXXX/Smith?
Staal - ADA

I can see one of Kreider, Miller, Hayes or Vesey getting dealt though.

If they have families here and do not feel like uprooting them right now, yes I do. Gives them another year to assess their options. It also will depend on the level of interest out there for their services during the offseason.

So what about the 35+ thing? Teams going through a rebuild don’t hang out near the cap. The only reason it matters is when you don’t have the player and need the cap space for other things. That won’t be the case.

I wouldn’t sign him for more than 2 years though.

So the Rangers can hear Nash cry about submitting his list of no trade teams next February. No thanks. Both Nash and Grabner will have many options this summer. Nash may end up going back to Columbus this summer. His wife is from there. He lives there in the summer.

We should try to be taking advantage of Jim Nill’s cap situation. Hitchcock doesn’t play Spezza and he’s got a year left at a high AAV. Retain 50% on Nash and take back the Spezza contract (perfect player for a transition year next season) and make him send picks and prospects.

Grabner had 27 goals and 40pts last season. There wasn't that much of a market for him then hence the 1yr sub $2MM contract.

Last few offseasons have shown teams aren't giving out too many large multiyear deals like they used to, to players 30+.

Would like some combo of Honka, Guryanov, Niskushin or Tufte.

Plus their #1 this year.

The Rangers don’t want to give McDonagh and Zuccarello contract extensions. Miller and Hayes are on the verge of getting big contracts this summer. Brooks mentioned the Miller and Hayes contract situations in his recent column. McKenzie also brought up those pending two contract extensions in the podcast. You can say the Rangers should not trade the above mentioned players unless they can get what they want. At some point,the Rangers will have to make a decision on each player. They can’t allow McDonagh and Zuccarello to leave for nothing. Hayes and Miller are arbitration eligible. McKenzie brought up the Rangers don’t want to married to certain players. A long term contract is a marriage.

I know EDM is looking for size down the middle to match-up against the centers in the Pacific to free up McJesus and Draisaitl while clearing cap space. Very few players fit the mold.

While I'm not high on RNH, I think he's due for a change and he's something the Rangers lack... a Playmaking Center that opens up chances for his wingers. Now the $6M hit is high, the Rangers will clear plenty of space and get an in-prime former 1st overall pick on a low buy.

Does RNH have 70+ Point upside? Probably not, he's best production was as an 18 year old... which is saying something. Something about EDM being a grave for youth during his 1st few years there, and a tertiary role the last 3 years after McDavid came along.

I think the Rangers can compete within next year if all the stars align and they manage the cap properly. More than likely, it will be this Trade Deadline, Plus this off-season, Next Trade Deadline and the Next Off-season to fill all the gaps.

The issue is that every long term contract the Rangers gave, internal or external, saw those guys become very complacent very quickly. Especially if there wasn't another contract to play for historically.

This is also the reason why they didn't had out early extensions. There is the NY lifestyle factor, where if you have money, and lots of it... life is quite good in NYC and the burbs. They've seen it time and time again, so they may be looking at bringing in guys that are hungry and let them give it their all and cash out elsewhere.

Sather's gone through this cycle before, so it's nothing new to him.

It make plenty of sense if they are trying for an unprecedented one deadline/offseason restock. I know it's not what you want, and I don't know if it will be possible, the returns on these trades will dictate that. But everything we're hearing makes complete sense if that's the idea. Trade the expirings, maybe trade the guys with one year till UFA or RFA, see if there are any hockey trades to be made, take on bad expiring or one deals for assets, draft, fill the roster out through free agency, see what they have come December and make the call on whether they are gonna do the same thing next deadline.

Kovalchuk makes sense either way bc free talent is free talent. And he would still instanteously be the rangers most talented/skilled/experienced forward. Good guy for chytil to play with

I understand Nash/grabner really like NY and the organization. But until they see what offers are out there, I'd say either returning is 50/50 at best

If they could net the match-up center your talking about, a winger for mcdavid and a young #3 LD who they will have rights to for a number of years.

It's making the determination that they would be better off with a deep well rounded team rather than top heavy with mcdavid/draistil and then trying to fill the rest of the team with bargains and ufas that top heavy teams like that have to. While trying to get those bargains and UFAs to come to Edmonton. It's not Chicago, it's not New York, it's not Crosby/Malkin in Pittsburgh, PA, or the kings in LA.

It's Edmonton. They will waste mcdavid best years and their young players controlled cost efficient years trying to build that team.

I think they should move draistil now and not loss more years down that path

I'd move Chytil to wing before I trade Hayes.
 
If I'm JG there is no chance I'm trading for nugent-Hopkins. That's bailing charelli out. That's his only way of keeping draistil is for someone to trade for Hopkins. So I'm not solving his problems for him when I want his problem.
