Duclair was a third round pick with who had voids in his game and concerns about his character.

Howden on the other hand is talented, has the right attitude, and had produced everywhere he’s played. He’s also a center.

Foote is a two way RHD with pedigree who many felt could have been a top-10 pick.

I completely disagree that Dukes value then was as high as Howdens or Footes, despite having limited success in his 15 or 20 games as a Ranger.

Again, I think you are undervaluing how Duclair was rated at the time. He fell in the draft but the year before he was considered a top prospect. HFboards had him ranked as the 41st best prospect in May 2015, right after he was traded. Top 50 NHL Prospects: Anthony Duclair heads 41-50 group in Spring rankings - Hockey's Future

Where he was drafted doesn't matter, he potted 50 goals in his D+1 season and made the team out of camp the year after (the same season he was traded.)

He was a very valuable asset when the Rangers traded him. It's easy to captain hindsight that one because of how its gone for him since then, but he was not some schmuck.

I hope our front office doesn't target the usual player they've coveted recently.

Questionable attitude
Questionable hockey sense
Questionable work ethic

Boat load of talent

Let's try not going this route for a change.

You mean like this past draft? There was the signal for change. Andersson is the opposite of all those players. Chytil appears that way too. I'm all but positive Andersson is the next team captain.

I could see Lias becoming captain in the future but he's certainly not the next captain at 19 years old if McDonagh gets moved. There's gotta be a buffer until Lias has established himself in the NHL, unless we just roll with 4 alternates until then

I mean those have also all been midround picks. The rangers picked in the first round again and I don’t think andersson or Chytil fit that criteria.

Rolling the dice in talent in the mid rounds is fine by me, especially if your team is able to sign NCAA and Euro Free Agents at the clip that the Rangers do.

Lundqvist is also 36. I love the guy and expect he will be good for a while, but there's at least a strong possibility that he'll decline in the next few seasons, and that when he does it could be rapid.

Then let him decline with dignity, on a team capable of carrying him when he can't carry them

Yeah, my post was specifically directed at the draft, but I agree. That was a step in the right direction, especially with Andersson.

I'm just curious, I get they held the presser because we're losing and people are getting tired of watching sloppy hockey. But do they have some names of guys on the team that they're close to shipping out? Otherwise why bring up the respected and loved faces comment ? Are trades coming sooner then later ?

Because as much as we are all into hockey on these forums, I think it's a small percentage of fans who actually watch a lot of non-NHL games.

That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not more familiar with their prospects than outsiders.

Take Buch for example. Not many saw him play, but the fact that we watched every video and read every article about him gave us a better understanding on what kind of player he was.

Too bad NHL Network or NBCSN doesn't implement some sort Trade deadline show like "Live PD" does. I mean they do cover everything pretty good, but what we the fans are getting is the watered down version passed through social media. How great would it be to have a war room set with 31 different TV's. In the War room, as a call from GM to GM is being made, they tap the call. Weeks and Tappan can host it.

"Looks like there's action in Tampa, lets go to the live feed to listen in" Camera goes to Stevie Y in Tampa, then split screens to Gorton in NY as the two GM's have at it. The audience hears the conversation live, sees the GM's swinging deals.

Understood and thanks for the thoughtful responses instead of just saying GTFO....

BTW I will be moving to the Triangle in May so I will have a rooting interest in the team going forward, just will still be second fiddle to the NYR.

Cool. I'm from the midwest and my wife is from NY (born in Buffalo, raised in the Finger Lakes region) and we lived in various places in the northeast, including Mid Hudson Valley NY before moving here in 2004. Two of my kids were born in NY. Hopefully you'll like it here as much as we do. Good luck on the move.

BTW, this article (published yesterday) is a Q+A with the Canes new owner and here's what he said about adding players and a reason why I don't think he'll mortgage the future.

Q&A with Tom Dundon: New Hurricanes owner talks franchise's future, Mark Cuban and the 'Hurricane Way'

I think anything we do, we have to weigh today versus tomorrow, in hockey and in every other business. We’re definitely willing to add if it would make the team better without unnecessarily sacrificing the future. I assume that’s most teams in our position that think they’re going to make the playoffs. I think we’ll be very rational and very calculated, but we definitely want to have those conversations

Between that and Francis's view of "building a team to compete year in and year out", I don't see any huge moves like ones being suggested. I do think they will be more aggressive than they were with Karmanos owing the team, but don't think they'll go hog wild.

This from a trusted source...everyone is asking the Rangers about McDonagh. Some teams are more serious than others but there are plenty of interested suitors, including his team. The price the Rangers have set is "astronomical". My friend (NHL scout) thinks that he is the one player that the Rangers hold on to and resign.

We should do a “This Is Us” draft lottery push avatar theme this year. I’ve never seen the show but the puns are too funny. “3 ROW in 20 games, this is us.” “Cody McLeod, this is us”. DJ 1C, this is us, and etc.

Yeah, it's actually kind of strange and it seems like they are trying to get out ahead of something. I would think hank if he didn't have that statement a week ago and his ntc.

This is pure speculation but I think trades are imminent. Gorton showed his hand by saying it's a rebuild so I assume he's had some conversations regarding Mac and zucc. Enough to know the range on return and that this is the course they are taking.

You don't have that presser to tell the world Nash and Grabner will be traded.

I would be totally fine with that. And, in putting two and two together with total presser, Zucc is the one they’re prepping the fanbase for.

I don't doubt the information, but I also don't think the Rangers keep McDonagh.

Glad they've set a super high price though.

Personal guess? Yes.

Defenseman of his caliber don't often find their way to market, especially with such a favorable contract. I think someone close will pay that "astronomical" price.
What do you think constitutes an astronomical price? Thanks for sharing, bobbop!
