I have a feeling something is up with Carolina... They just put two players on waivers.

After the press conference and everyone feels that something BIG is coming. Well how is this for BIG:

To Carolina:

Hank
McDonagh
Nash @ 50%

To NYR
Darling
Hanafin
Necas
1st 2018
2nd 2018
1st 2019

New owner in Carolina, wants to make a splash, and what are their biggest weaknesses, scoring up front and goaltending.

Lets have some fun. 3 way deal:

Rangers get
Heiskanen
Howden
Tampa 2018 1st rounder

Tampa gets:
Mcdonagh at 50% retained

Dallas gets:
Nash (with retention if needed)
Foote
2019 Tampa 1st rounder

Is Zibanejad definitely staying as part of the new, younger core? Or is it possible he's available along with Zuccarello and McDonaugh? Wondering if the Rangers would think about it if a blue chip prospect was offered.

Any player on our team is available for the right price.

The price for Zibanejad will be very high though.

Full rebuild makes no sense unless we trade Lundqvist.
One thing to keep in mind. We need to maintain the cap floor, so keeping around players that will stick through the rebuild (Lundqvist, Staal, etc) are essential to execute the rebuild (unless we just put a bunch of minimums on the ice and take on big contracts of other teams). I personally don't mind having leaders on the team that can help usher in the new generation of players.

He is 23 and came here last you, you can likely answer that yourself

If you are thinking Domi, then no.

This is awful.

Tampa trades Howden, Foote, and 2 firsts?

Heiskanen is untouchable at this point. Literally, untouchable.

We already have Lundqvist’s replacement
Okay.

My point was, Lundqvist on the team doesn't allow this roster to bottom out the way you need to if you're actually tanking.

23rd in the league right now. How much worse can it get? What record does Lundqvist carry this team to at a minimum? .400 hockey? .350 hockey? Do the math on that. Where does the team end up in the standings if they play .375 hockey the rest of the way? Odds on draft pick lottery winning? Or do we settle in anywhere from 8-15 overall?

No one is gonna want that contract, even if we retain.
Also every contender besides St. Louis already has a really good goalie

But if that was the way teams did a rebuilt they would literally dress a FHL goaltender for a whole season and intentionally lose every game.

Maybe we see a little more of Pavs down the stretch, but I dont think they'll trade a future banner player just to lose a couple extra games.

And yet even with Henke in net, the Rangers are dropping like a rock in the standings.

It will never happen in a million years but I know of one team that would kill to get their hands on him right now.

I don't understand anything on this forum anymore.
The big thing I hope we avoid is a situation like Buffalo/Phoenix, etc where the lack of leadership prevents a team from getting over the perpetual player development cycle... A lot of it takes luck (sucking in the right years), but having some semblance of leadership can shift the rebuild or reboot in hyperdrive (see Boston, Tampa, etc).

On the other hand, if you can get a lot of major pieces from the deals on the table then Lundqvist can help the team play meaningful games earlier in the process and accelerate the rebuild.

As far as I understand, the point of a rebuild is to fill up the organization with major assets. And grow a new core around those assets. It isn't just about winning the draft lottery. 'Settling' for 8-15 is fine with me because in all likelihood you've made major deals already and outside of the draft.

It's not of great interest to me to say that only Cup Winners have rebuilt successfully since much of winning it all comes down to luck, be it winning a draft lottery, or being healthy, or gaining a favorable matchup in a certain year. So, like GMJG said, you rebuild to be a cup contender. There are plenty of teams who have done that fabulously without tanking or winning the draft lottery—the Rangers being one of them.
