Never. Every past or current contender bottomed out and got a handful of top 5/10 picks with a 1st OA. Hawks, Pens, Leafs, Lightning, etc.

Our rebuild is truly just starting because we don’t have that franchise changing piece yet, ala Malkin, Kane, Stamkos, Matthews, Laine, etc.

Hughes could be that guy. And IF we got him, it would just be the start.

I’m content with our current prospects, but I’m also not saying “Boy in 3 years we are set.” Because we’re not. We need that piece (at least one).
Shestyorkin

I like the idea that Gorton is getting out front of this trade deadline. Looking at the pending free agent list, there is a glut of forwards. Not all will make it to the trade deadline without contracts but several will and they will likely become available as deadline rentals. Enough motivated buyers out there to make deals sooner rather than later. Jim Rutherford in Pittsburgh is one GM who is always ready to deal sooner rather than later. Around Thanksgiving is when things will happen.

Shestyorkin signs his 2 year ELC in May. He turns 23 this December 30

22-23 year olds sign 2 year ELC's.

The 2 year ELC coincides with the last two seasons of Lundqvist's contract.

How is Lundqvist going to react losing starts to Shestyorkin?

Figure there will be an adjustment period for Shestyorkin.

Lundqvist still believes the Rangers will be able to win with him on the team. Kevin Weekes was on the NHL Network the Monday after the Edmonton game. Weekes still speaks to Lundqvist. He said the King still believes he can win in New York but Weekes doesn't think that's going to happen.

If the young Russian comes here and shows he can play at a high level, Quinn has to give him most of the starts.

What does Lundqvist do then?

A trade out of NY is the best solution for both parties.

Lundqvist holds all of the cards with his NMC.

There are teams looking for upgrades in goal.

Going forward. The Rangers will go with the younger Shestyorkin at a lower price than the $8.5M allocated to Lundqvist.

How much will it cost for Shestyorkin's 2nd NHL contract? It won't $8.5M.
This post is at LEAST 6 months early.

If Hank is backing up Shesty and the team is good do you think Hank is gonna pout? I'm sure Gorts will ask again if he has the stomach for this. You're right that Hank holds the cards... as he should. One of THE BEST NYR of all time. He wants to leave that's up to him.

Vesey was smart with that fight, earned himself a spot on the top line

Kreider with Hayes could be interesting, two power forwards on that line.

On one hand those forward lines are nauseating. On the other, all aboard the Tank Express.

At this point, give those lines a shot. f*** it. Maybe they find some chemistry somewhere with different player types.

But switch Names and Chytil. Chytil-Howden-Buch.

The two guys that actually have excellent chemistry are Kreider and Zibanajad, why you would split them is mind boggling unless they are trying to get Hayes going.

Eh. They have chemistry in spurts, but it doesn’t last. It didn’t last year at the end of the year and it hasn’t this year either.

That was my reaction to Elliotte referring to the Rangers not willing to deal their “cornerstone” young players after I read his 31 Thoughts column yesterday.

It’s “young core players” today.

Which ones? The Rangers don’t have many young guys on their roster.

He must be referring to their recent 1st rounders and the players acquired from TB.

You’re wrong about Zibanejad and Kreider unless Hayes and Zuke are staying. This management will not strip the team to the barebones with a combination of rookies and bottom line vets playing out of position with AHLers on the bottom lines.

I don't think there are too many "untouchable" players on this roster.

Saying someone is "wrong" about X, Y, Z moving can be easily countered by saying we don't know because if someone comes with an offer for Kreider that blows Gorton away do you think he says 'no' at this point?

The team is bad. It may get worse, but the eye isn't on this season OR the next. Kreider is a nice piece but if Gorts gets a haul for him I think he'd move him, along with Hayes and Zucc who I believe are certainly gone.

This concept that this team can't lose 1-2 years in a row for fear of being EDM is patently false and likely goes against what will occur and what the GM has in mind. No matter who moves the true captain (in net) isn't moving so the leadership is there, he's just not wearing a letter.
