I feel like the 3rd team non-sense is over blown.... He played one AHL season for Tampa and was sold off to Arizona. Arizona is just funky and all over the place with its personal management.
That’s not quite accurate. Tampa took him with the 19th pick in the draft and traded him for the 37th pick two years later. To me, that screams cut your losses.

Arizona has been a mess in many ways but Chayka and Tippett did establish a sense of sanity with roster management. After one undistinguished year, he was on the move to New York. I saw enough of that season up close to understand exactly why.

Now this is going into 2020-21 and we still suck? Pass.

I think it was always going to. Last year of Hank/Staal/Shattenkirk/Smith. All the albatross contracts are gone after that year. 21-22 should be our first year actually competing, one would hope.

Delete if this was already discussed....

Is there anything going on with the Rangers and Maple Leafs?

Dubas and Nylander's agent, Lewis Gross, were at the Ranger game last night and were seen talking, according to Darren Dreger. Dreger mentions further that it isn't out of the question that GM's presonally go out to watch hockey, but definitely do so with purpose. So something is definitely up with TOR and NYR.

Dreger mentioned over the radio that Toronto tried to get a defenseman from NYR before the deadline last season, but eventually called it quits when the Rangers asked for Kasperi Kapanen in return.

Thoughts?

They were rumored to be in on McDonagh.

My hope is Skjei for Nylander, but maybe Shattenkirk, McQuaid, or Smith (Babcock connection).

I think its absolutely ridiculous to pass on elite talent that will be available at no cost in assets, but only money and the cap (which we will have plenty of space), just because the team may not be ready to compete next year. Its nonsense. Is there going to be another Panarin impact type player available in 2020 free agency? In 2021? They dont come around often and when they do who is to say they choose NY. No team wins a stanley cup with all homegrown players. All recent winners have ADDED star/marquee players to what they had. Panarin is the Hossa, Oshie, Carter, etc. Panarin may not be important to next year’s team but he certainly will be in the following years.

Stop with the personal agenda’s to tank clouding the logic of signing Panarin who is rumored to want to be a Ranger. Just stop.

Agreed. It is ridiculous, especially because a talent like Panarin isn't walking through that door anytime soon and, specifically due to the Rangers avoidance of completely bottoming out, it sure seems like this is the only route to get the truly elite talent necessary to compete.

At the start of the 2020-21 season, Andersson will be days away from 23. Chytil will be 22 that year. Kravtsov, Miller, Keane, etc. will be 21.

If we're not seeing progress by then, we're in serious trouble.

They'll be younger, sure. Worse would be a big problem.

I can see if we're still not a contender in 3 years. If we're still going downward in 3 years, we ****ed something up.
I think we will see progress, but it won't mean that we'll be a playoff bound team. We will be asking for a lot of young players to be the guys on the team, also 20/21 will probably be a rookie season for Miller, Keane and some others, so I will be happy to be a bubble team by then.

If 2020-21 is the target for being relevant again, Panarin for 7 years in 2019-20 makes a lot of sense. Guys like this just don’t come free that often.

Kreider? That’s a tough one. Market (Kane, Van Riemsdyk) says 6-7 years at $6-7MM. He going to have to show me a lot between now and February to make that kind of leap.

I think McQuaid gets you a fourth, maybe a third.

But even if it’s a fourth, the “drop” in drafting position was the cost of the season.

Nick Holden got us more than we gave up for him, and I think McQuaid is viewed in a better light, so hopefully we get more in a return.

I don't think management would trade for McQuaid without receiving more than what they gave up to get him. The cost was Kampfer, 4th rounder and a conditional 7th rounder (which if McQauid gets traded NYR would lose). If they received a 4th that will ultimately be lower on draft day than NYR's 4th, that's really bad asset management from Gorton and Co.

Think, at the very least, it would be McQuaid for a 3rd or better (barring adds on each side).

I think the Leafs are just doing their due diligence at this point. Most likely, Nylander gets bridged, however, in the event that this impasse remains, I do think the Leafs will trade Nylander and the Rangers are a good match.

The Leafs are obviously win-now. They want roster players that are effective immediately, specifically a defenseman. (they don't want assets, nor would the Rangers want to trade assets, this is why they're a great match). The Rangers have two coveted defensemen that both have an upside to the Leafs, while also having a few veteran forwards that would be an additional add.

Skjei and Shattenkirk both would be a big add to the Leafs. I think the trade premise would be either Skjei + veteran forward, or Shattenkirk w/ retention + veteran forward. While Skjei is probably the more attractive piece, Shattenkirk with retention would be a huge gain for the Leafs and would also solve their soon-to-be problem with Gardiner's next contract. If the Leafs get Shattenkirk, they instantly gain leverage over Gardiner and can afford to just let him walk without absorbing any loss. Shattenkirk at 25-50% retention would be a hell of a gain for them.

The timeline of the Leafs and Rangers works out very well. Leafs need roster players for their current window and Rangers have some to trade due to their rebuild. No way the Leafs want assets back if they trade Nylander.

I do think there has been discussion between these two teams regarding Nylander. Leafs would be foolish to not inquire. They would want this trade more than the Rangers actually. Rangers aren't against any pressure cooker in this one. It's the Leafs that have a potential time bomb in Nylander and may have to get whatever they can if he continues to hold out.

7x7 for Kreider?
Do not think Kreider are here at the beginning og 20-21 season. Him needing a new contract after next year doesnt match good with our team as he will get pretty old in the middle of the compete phase.
He's entering his prime as a power forward. Depends on this season and how he finishes. 5 yrs (bring him to 32?) x 6-7M could be fair.

8 games in, on pace for a 40goal season and he hasn't 'played his game' yet.

The cap is changing. The cap will increase even more with the Seattle expansion AND the new TV deal ( which should be exponentially larger than the NBC deal )

But we're not talking about actually competing. We're talking about this team being worse in 20-21 than they are now. That would be a disaster.

I don't think a big deal is in the works, but don't overlook the value TML would place on expiring contracts. Think Zuccarello. Dubas is trying to have flexibility in the event of an offersheet next summer. He needs the space regardless.
