I've never understood this sentiment. If an Eastern conference team offers the best package, you take it.

That's not how NHL GMs operate. They don't believe in making their playoff clinching probabilities more difficult for years to come, that's why they ship them across the conference. Especially when it involves moving a front line player.

Matters less so with bottom line players, but that's why the logic exists.

I don't agree. If you make a trade that makes you better, you inherently improve your playoff clinching probability.

That's only one side of the equation. You remove that variable by shipping across conferences.

I get your point, sometimes it's baffling (see the two OTT/SJ trades).... but I get why they do it.

Zero interest in trading Skjei for Nylander. I dont know why some team doesn't man up and offer Nylander a 5 year 7.5 mill/ year contract and just squash the Leafs Hope's of retaining all their players a team like Colorado who have Ottawas 1st pick this year would make their own available possibly. A 1st 2nd and 3rd would really be a steal for him. If Toronto matches it it really puts the pressure on the Matthew's and Marner contracts.
I'm putting all my eggs in the rebuild and the possibility of signing Panarin. Keep all our picks and add at free agency.

Well, Nylander has to accept that offer sheet first.

The more I think about it, the more I think we could move Shattenkirk at TDL, so long as he has had a decent season. ADA and Pionk show too much promise, Bigras having a great start to his season in Hartford playing on the right side. We’re starting to shift Smith on RD, despite being so logged at RD. Maybe testing the waters for a defense corps post Shattenkirk and McQuaid, the two veterans that are easier to move than Smith and Staal.

I also think we could be seeing Gettinger, Andersson and Fogarty sooner rather than later. Maybe Zucc and Hayes go to teams who anticipate contending, but are struggling out of the gate. I say that even though Zucc’s my favorite Ranger right now.

Not to sound like an *******, but I’m not sure how anyone looks at DeAngelo and Pionk and says “yup, let’s move Shattenkirk, with these guys he’s expendable”
No, that’s fair. But I’ll say this- 1) Shattenkirk is without a point in four games. 2) we aren’t competing for a Cup this season, we’re developing a Cup contender a couple years away at best, about when Shattenkirk’s contract will be expiring. 3) our depth includes kids who arguably would better develop with quality minutes in the NHL, and he is blocking at least one at the moment, and not really contributing yet.

As Avery16 said, it's not so much that those two make Shatty expendable it's more that with the trajectory this team is on, it's unlikely that Shattenkirk will really make a difference/even be here when it's time to compete. This season looks like it is going to be a high draft pick kind of season, next season there could be some improvement (and a good signing or two) and so maybe we're a bubble team, if everything goes perfectly in season 3 you are looking to make noise in the playoffs - but Shatty is a FA to be so do they trade him at the deadline or keep him and let him walk for nothing?

At the same time, as an organisation we really need to understand what guys like ADA and Pionk are actually capable of at the NHL because it will factor into what we look for with picks and trades moving forward. There's also the matter that if they don't play now their value becomes basically nothing within a season, where as right now they can likely be used as part of a trade if required.

Shatty is such a die hard fan of this team he intentionally signed a contract with us so he could get traded for another asset to help with the rebuild. He bleeds blue just like us!:sarcasm:

Shattenkirk should stay. McQuaid should be moved to give Pionk and DeAngelo more minutes. Smith and Claesson have played well enough to prove they deserve time as well. McQuaid at the deadline should net at least what Holden got us I would think.

Remember a year ago Shattenkirk was a player who took less to sign with this club. Then a bomb drops and with it a knee goes. Would be cruel to trade him today, just give him time and support.

Because he probably doesn't get a better shot at a cup and the Rangers can threaten to trade him to any of the 20 teams that aren't on his list if he doesn't comply. I don't think he'd turn down a trade to Toronto over tax issues considering the position that team is currently in.

There is no way the NHLPA wouldn't rain down hellfire if the clubs started using shitty mob tactics like this. This is not how you do things in professional worklife. This is move dramatics, not real life.

Posters here seem to balk at the idea of this. I might be wrong of course, but if there's one thing that's never a thing around here, is supporting a player that's struggling for more than 1 shift. Or god forbid more than a game.

Shattenkirk signed the contract. Nobody forced him to sign the contract which included the Rangers being able to trade him after his first season.

This board plays favorites all of the time. They gang up on one player who they hate and ignore the struggles of a player they wanted here and was the answer to all of the Rangers ailments.

You're wrong, which is fine

But DeAngelo and Pionk are bottom pair defenders. But yeah let's move the one top 4 RD we have

I am not wrong. Shattenkirk is not very good. He is horrible. You guys have this weird picture of Shattenkirk. He is not a top pair D. He never was and will never be a top pair D. He is bottom pair D on a good team and PP specialist. The Rangers PP stinks. They have scored one goal on the PP and he wasn’t a factor in that goal. Shattenkirk wasn’t going to be the Rangers top pair D. They were supposed to play him with McDonagh. The Rangers #1 pair. Yeah right. Trotz was right in his comments about Shattenkirk not being a top pair D. He helped the Caps a little bit on the PP but that was it. Shattenkirk got his little feelings hurt and Trotz apologized for speaking the truth.
