The Rangers are currently in a terrible position with the players you don't want to trade having important roles on the team. I'd much rather have a core of Chytil/Buch/Skjei/Shesty + 2018/2019/2020 picks + other prospects acquired in trades in 2021-22 than a core of 32 year old McDonagh/34 year old Zuccarello/30 year old Kreider/28 year old Miller/29 year old Hayes.

The next 4 years are a lost cause due to the Lundqvist/Staal/Girardi contracts. Trying to contend is only going to hurt the future. Re-signing McDonagh/Zucc/Kreider to long term deals during this 4 year stretch will lead to more years of mediocrity.

You say overdoing the rebuild, I say making sure that the Rangers have the best chance at selecting elite talent in the draft.

Trading those players now means you can compete in 2018 and 2019

Skjei is a career 45% possession player against second line competition or above, and that's your core defenseman? Right there your team is f***ed.

Re-sign McDoangh. There's no replacement.

Well you can't trade everybody. MH is right about that, throwing a bunch of young guys out there to sink or swim is how the Oilers got themselves into a massive mess before they won the McDavid sweepstakes.

That doesn't mean holding on to certain guys just because you may not be able to find a better player. The UFA's, Zuccarello and maybe even Hayes should 200000000% be moved by the deadline this year if they're out of it.

I'm not convinced they can't be a really good team as soon as next year as long as they're smart about things.

Well, had to happen at some point, i still think he can bounce back a bit and be a top-10, maybe top-5 goalie in the league again but time is definitely catching up with him. To be fair though, he is by far the best goalie in the post lockout era and you can make a solid argument that he's the 2nd best goalie in the modern hockey era, so atleast there's that.

Can't argue with what he's done in his career. He's carried this team on his back for over a decade. The question now is whether or not the team can adapt to a style that doesn't require him to keep them in every game.

We have the D group to do just this now, just need a coach which uses them like that too.

Lundqvist hasn't been a well below average goalie in the last year though, he's been average, slightly above, when looking at shot quality adjusted stats like for example dSv%.

For 8.5m he needs to be more than average. He needs to be more than even above average. He is dragging this team down as much as Staal is.

Well, when you put it that way...

I mean we could draft one, sure, but he's 18 next year, assuming we got him as quickly as possible. (More likely, he's 14-16 now)

He'll be 20, 21 in that 2021 target season. Still not ready to give him the team and McDonagh still being here would be great. In 2027, when the next McDonagh contract is up, he's 26. If he's our #1 D, McDonagh walks or takes a retirement paycut, and we slide that money right over to Drafty McFuturepants. We're set.

But that's in nine f***ing years. If we rebuild, I wanna be back in 2-4 years, not nine years.

And again, that's best case scenario. Our next #1D after McDonagh could be in middle school for all we know.

Then if the rest of the rebuild goes well, and you traded McDonagh, you waste that whole window waiting/searching for a #1D.

McDonagh is still in his prime. He's perfectly capable of being the face of the next wave.

Rangers have made the playoffs 11 of the 12 years since the league shut down for 04-05, and won an Eastern Conference, President's Trophy, two Division titles, and went to 3 ECFs in a 4 year span. They also won two playoff series in the Jagr Era which was supposed to be a stopgap, which is more than some teams have won in a decade or two. They also integrated youth into the lineup every year, and drafted pretty good. In my opinion, they've paid their debt back to society for the dark ages. There's no shame in missing the playoffs and rebuilding for a year or two especially after all they've accomplished.

You can't just have a bunch of 18-year-olds running around the ice though, not good for development. Need some Cup winners brought in to teach the kids how to be pros, even if it means a slight overpayment.

If they play their cards right, they could be at least at a second round level as soon as next year with 60-75% of this team.

McDonagh is our #1 d right now and the team is f***ed. I think you're missing the point about 2021-22. For some reason in your mind that season needs to be a target year to compete? The significance of that year is that the Staal/Lundqvist and to a lesser extent Shatt/Smith contracts will be off the cap. Once those contracts are gone the Rangers can actually have a chance at competing for the cup. But the only way that happens is if they draft 1 or 2 elite talents. Otherwise we are looking at another decade of being good but never great.

If Hank has taken a turn then it’s fire sale time. Zuccarello. Kreider. McDonagh. This organization needs Hank to be Hank for at least another 2 years.

I'd argue that he needs to stop being the primary factor into whether or not this team is successful. This team has overachieved for years because of him. He's not that goalie anymore and this team has done nothing to help EITHER goalie.
