I agree as I feel like we have some pretty damn solid organizational depth at forward. And our D-core on the nhl roster are pretty young (fox, lindy, kandre, schneider). Id be more looking to move picks than prospects.
For example, lets say our 2024 1st could land wennberg and eberle, you do that, right?
Combined they cost 10 mil. Seattle would have to eat half on both. There's zero chance that we'd get both with retention for just a 1st round pick, but if Seattle was stupid enough to do that deal, I'd absolutely have to consider it.
This is the first year I've said it and it mostly revolves around the age of our highest point producers and the contracts of Laf, K'andre, Schneider, etc. How many more high level years do we expect from Kreider and Panarin? If they drop off in the next two years we will be stuck in the middle again like before the rebuild when Nash, Richards, St.Louis etc aged out. My frustration the last couple of years was that we needed to keep our picks for this year, fill up the cupboards and then go for it the next 3 years before we waste another all stars prime and when they fall off we have a ton of young prospects to backfill with. Thankfully we drafted well with Othmann, Sykora, Perrault etc.
What if Mika continues to be ass? What if Trouba and Lindgren don't pick up their games? What if Panarin goes back to being playoff Panarin?
Thinking that our only chance to win is while those 2 players are at the top of their game is why we continue to fail year after year. The team believes it and trades away our future. We don't win and we either toil away in mediocrity until we crash and burn, or we start trading away players for futures to jumpstart a rebuild. It's the same thing over and over again.
If this is the last hurrah for Kreider and Panarin, so be it. As long as we have quality goaltending, we have a chance. As long as we have quality prospects ready to come up and fill spots, we have a chance. Maybe Panarin falls off, we don't re-sign him, and we use that money to sign McDavid as a UFA. We can't predict the future, but we can prepare for it.
I would rather be good every year and have a shot at the cup every year, than play this whack a mole game where we're trying to maximize our chances by going all until we have nothing left.
