People would be upset if they kept up some forward prospect just to healthy scratch them to play McLeod over them, rightfully so, correct?

But them healthy scratching a prospect in ADA to play McQuaid should not upsetting?

Lias not making the team is okay because he needs big minutes in the AHL, yet Chytil, Howden do not?

Chytil, Howden played well enough to have a NHL spot, but one of ADA Pionk did not?

Overall my angst comes from what I see as contradictory moves on the Rangers part.

I know it seems like I am making way too big of a deal out of this, and in a way I fully admit I am over dramatizing it, I just really think the focus needs to be on the rebuild in terms of development more so than on anything else and I am unsure if the moves they seem to be making jive with that, and being this is kind of like the first glimpse into how coaching and the GMs are playing things going into the first organization admitted rebuilding season, it's just not really the feeling or look I was hoping for.

Pretty happy with the decisions and lines.

Would’ve put Lias on the wing with Hayes and moved Names and Vesey to the 4th with Howden. Lettieri as the 13th.

Would rather put Zucc with Chytil instead of Fast. Swap those two.

Think DeAngelo deserves the spot over McQuaid with Skjei but the pairings are right.

Pumped for the season!

If DeAngelo sits, it just shows me that nothing has changed. He was the NYR best defenseman this preseason, and did everything he needed to (and more). If the FO had their minds set before training camp even started, then why play preseason games?

The problem is that we have a ton of bad contracts on the blueline.

Sometimes you get what you deserve. We have another vet heading north of 30 on a long term deal, we don’t want to trade him because it would give us a bad rep in relation to other UFAs. Girardi bought out. Staal. Smith, Shatty can still play, but for how long? McQuaid? I can’t fault the McQuaid trade really. You ‘can’t’ enter a season with three identical player type at RD. But ADA should play, he deserved a spot. What is Shatty doing that is so great, passing the puck along to Ziba. But sure he is the best PPQB option, no denying that. But aren’t we rebuilding?

One Cup since 1940. Maybe there is a reason for that? We deal the guys that are heart and soul Rangers but stay loyal to the UFA that signed here and showed up bottom 2 in shape for camp in competition with Fat Smith.

Brooks isn’t afraid to stir things up. He has not once mentioned that Shatty should be an option for Gorton to move. It would get a lot of clicks. Why? Because it’s ‘unthinkable’, don’t do everything to accomodate an expensive UFA signing? It’s beyond imagination. Screw the kid. One Cup in 78 years...

Andersson not making the team is utterly pathetic, but I think there was some serious GM intervention here by reasoning of asset management. You can't send Vesey, Spooner or Names down because they'll have literally 0 trade value at the deadline. I think all 3 including Hayes most likely are gone at the deadline which is why we're seeing the finalized roster we're seeing. As bad as it is, having McLeod in the lineup is almost a necessity to protect the kids we do have up right now because McQuaid can't do it all himself and without those 2 this team is small and soft (so to speak) .

Gonna be a real long year and I can see us easily picking in the top 5 next year, so see we can pass on more high end talent (Middelstadt) and draft another guy that's a good "heart and soul guy" that would be lucky to possibly put up 50 points in 2024. Then you have Hank who will probably steal us 5 or 6 games keeping us out of a top 3 pick. This team just can't get out of it's own way

let's wait maybe until actual games are played. These lines might not even be the same the next time they practice. The lineup could be compeltely different by the end of October

I guess I'm just not one to want to freak out all the time but maybe that's getting more rare on the internet

Can someone show me where it's been stated by the coach ADA is being scratched for someone to start the season? As far as I can tell there are only tweets saying he made the team and is paired with Claesson in practice.

I only saw 4 of the 6 pre-season games but Andersson was clearly a class above Howden in the games i saw, and much more complete 200ft player than both he and Chytil (who has the better offensive upside).
A 3rd line of Spooner-Andersson-Fast would have worked well IMO

Would be very intetested to hear what instructions were given to Andersson game to game, and even more interested in what they told him while informing him he was going to Hartford

Judging by the other pairs one would assume that the Claesson/DeAngelo pair is the odd one out, though it's also possible that the Staal/Pionk pair is instead.

But the pairs are really a mess IMO. Skjei and McQuaid...like really, McQuaid was never more than a 3rd pair D in Boston, are you saying that Skjei is going to be a 3rd pair guy now, or are they hoping that there's some magical synergy that overcomes McQuaid's short falls?

Smith and Shattenkirk? Both too much risk takers IMO. When it works I could see it working real well and when it doesn't I can see it being real bad.

Staal and Pionk we already know ultimately sucks in the number of shots against they give up.

Claesson/DeAngelo might not actually be a bad pairing if it was one that was getting into the lineup and not sitting in the press box.

That all said, we're still almost a week out from the season starting, coaches may be playing with the lineup to see who they like in practice, and things could change in a hurry once games start mattering.

I'll be pretty annoyed if the D usage stays like this but I'll save my energy for when it's a reality

Not bothered by Hajak getting sent down either.

But I loved how well he competed and handled the physical pressure of playing in the NHL. Playing in Canadian juniors have been great for him in that sense. But the key for him is to be able to take a little bit more command offensively. It’s really a non-decision for me. Go to HFD and get PP time, a little easier opponents. He should be able to become a solid top 4 D at least. Hopefully the offense can come too.

I also like that we kept Howden up. Give the kid a little jump start to his pro career even if it doesn’t have to last the entire season (not saying that it won’t, but time will tell). I think he looks very promising but I have not quite seen him been able to hold things together, carry a line like a center have to do. As a result his unit does get pushed back a little too much. But like 4/5 plays on the other hand are perfectly OK. I think he have moved well too, but it’s a challenge to always be able to pressure the puck for a center in today’s super high paced game, there is a reason for why we are seing so many faster smaller dynamos make it while the bigger kids take more time.

Namestnikov worries me. A typical example, he makes 2-3 really good plays. The kid is skilled. Then he comes down deep, fetch a puck with no options and decides to do the right thing, try to skate it out of danger. He beats the first guy and the second guy, that however forces him to turn sharply so that he loses speed. Still no options and a 3rd guy is coming at him hard. Names just throws the puck up toward a winger along the boards to his left that is pressured and we lose the puck. No where near to connect. This is the NHL. A forechecking team will not leave players open ever in those situations. Was Names in a tough spot? You bet. Could he have stripped of the puck? Of course. But you just cannot let off and try something else in that situation. If he just keeps going most likely Phillys defense have to scramble and manage to take him down and the puck goes out to the neutral zone, he draws a penalty or even get past the 3rd guy too. But an easy pass is never going to be there in that situation. And that is something a good 15-16 y/o just should know. When you go that route, you must follow through.

Names have played almost 450 pro games. 130 games in the OHL. And so forth. Ha makes that play once in the U20 league in Sweden and the coach sits him down and tell him hey you can’t do that, sometimes on the ice you fail sometimes you don’t, but that is a bad decision that never will play out well. He does it twice and he is sat. Why is he doing it still in the NHL?? Is he receptive to coaching? WhT is the issue? I think he played well in most situations, but you still don’t want to see those boneheaded decisions. Mistakes don’t worry me one bit. Sometimes you will mishandle a puck. Not get enough wood on a pass and have it picked up. But it disrupts so much when a player don’t follow the thought process on the ice.

Maybe it’s iust consistency. Maybe he can find an environment to build on. The raw skills are certainly there. Put them together and he could become a top line C in this league. But some things should be in place by now and they aren’t...

I don't think Namestnikov vaguely has the skills to be a top line C and I'm not even as down on him as most.

I think he has the skills to be a middle six winger if he can find a comfort level but he so far has looked uncomfortable up and down the lineup in NY

Andersson down to start doesn’t mean much cause he’s going to come up within a short period of time

I’d rather see Howden down too if he’s not top 9 but all the kids will get looks so let’s see what happens

And that’s the difficult part.

I think most people have the hope in their mind that Namestnikov can bring versatility, two-way and some points to middle six role. But so far, we haven’t really seen a lot to back that up since coming to NY.

In theory, Namestnikov should fill a useful, if mostly unspectacular role. But it’s just that — a theory.

Yeah, so maybe people should reel it in a little here. I'll be just as upset if he is benched, but let's not get carried away.

I can tell when my kids are ready for bed because they start getting moody and almost look as if they want to be grounded.

In the same vein, it’ll be a miracle if certain people don’t get themselves banned before this season is up.

I feel for the mods.

Regarding Namestnikov, I'm glad they stopped trying to put him at RW. His play, even in Tampa, flows much better when he's on his strong side and can set up passes across the slot. He's a much better playmaker than shooter, and being on LW helps his forecheck game too. I'd rather have him in Vesey's spot, but I get not wanting to put Vesey with two rookies.

Why are people making extrapolations over practice lines a week out from the next game. Like its impossible someone plays their way in, or out in the next week. Or (clearly IMO) they're still looking for D-pairing chemistry.
