I’d be shocked if they dress 11 F and 7 D this season
We don’t have a clear cut 4C, we don’t have a top-4 D that can handle the minutes. He’ll split the duties for 4C among probably Andersson, Hayes and Namestnikov (who will all get a majority of their minutes in the top-9). McQuaid and/or Smith can probably play in the top-4 if they only have to do it between 12:00-16:00 per game. This also allows for us to carry and shelter both ADA and Pionk.

I get it, I still don’t see it happening

He's too important to their image and their selling point as a destination for elite free agents. If a guy like that decides to leave money on the table cause he wants to be here, presumably because he's a childhood Rangers fan, but even in an alternate scenario just because he likes NYC or because he likes the organization or exposure....

... you can't deal him after a year. It's a betrayal. If he wanted to be somewhere else, he could have held out for top dollar.

You disrespect a free agent signing like that who specifically wanted to be in NY, and agents and GMs will remind future free agents of that fact.

It's different maybe a couple more years down the line. Maybe in his contract year. But not this year, no way.

Trade restrictions is a central part of any negotiations. And certainly when there is talk of a player leaving term -- I am not so sure Shatty actually left a lot of money on the table, but years, sure -- this obviously was a sticking point.

The result was a full NMC year 1 and then a limited NTC. In addition, we signed Shatty as a contender. Now we are in a full blown rebuild. Shatty turns 30 in a couple of months.

I would agree with you if we still were a contender but where like looking for a PF instead of a PPQB and dealt Shatty in a hockey trade. But come on, we just dealt our Captain Ryan McDonagh. We dealt almost all other vets, only Zucc is left of the vets that were tradeable and that was due to GMs snozing at the deadline only starting to talk to Gorton about him at the last second. Zucc could quite possibly be moved this season or not resigned in the summer.

Wouldn't we even get to a point where people around the league started to wonder what we were doing if we did -- not -- move Shatty? Typical NYR, they trade all heart and soul players but honor the UFA signing!

This is exactly why, on both accounts. We Sticky the roster building thread during the offseason in place of GDTs.

You can follow threads now, which is probably the next best thing.

This sounds great, I don't want to miss anything, can I get an email every time someone posts in the roster building thread? My email adress is; [email protected]

We have to get down to 23 at some point, 21 skaters.

Because of the injuries and waiver rules, I think it’s clear that the following will make the team:

Zib
Zucc
Kreider
Hayes
Buch
Spooner
Names
Chytil
Fast
Andersson
Vesey
Lettieri
McLeod

and

Skjei
Shattenkirk
Staal
ADA
Smith
McQuaid
Pionk
Claesson

Of these 21 skaters, we can ice 18 per game. I believe Quinn will mostly ice 11 F and 7 D. Of these, I think McLeod and Claesson will sit most often.

I am not sure who will win out between Tokarski and Georgiev.

I'd waive both Cleasson and McLeod.

Hajek and Meskanen both to deserve to break camp with the big club and I'd bet a hard earned dollar neither vet gets claimed.

I'm with Ola on the Shattenkirk trade idea, for the most part he does not really fit into any timeline that makes much sense. He is likely to be gone or declined by the time the Rangers are even nearing being very good again. He has some term left that may be attractive to certain teams.

I do not expect him to be traded, at least not before the deadline where it become more of a who knows based on what deals are out there, nor do I expect him to be traded if no other RDs have developed or if one is not returning in that or some other trade, but I think the idea towards trading him will gain more steam as the term left on his contract decreases.

can't keep hajek unless he's in the top 6 though. he's gotta play

Quinn was already asked about 11F and 7D and he said something along the lines of... it's something to consider occasionally in certain situations throughout a season, but he's looking to stick with the normal 12-6 set up.

Concerning your list, I agree that Lettieri deserves a 1st shot on roster. He can play 4th line C or W and his energy and persistence seems to be what this staff is looking for.

If they want to put the best players on the ice on D, Claesson should be waived and Staal 7th D - and that's only because of his contract and NMC. I'd keep O'Gara or Crawley as 7th before Staal if there was a choice.

Staal does not fit at all on this team or the team's projected style of play. He's still out there playing AV's latch-on-and-chase defense while others are playing zone. He's getting beat to pucks and not winning board battles. Using last night as a small sample... Shatty looked pretty bad at a lot of points in the game. But, you can see spurts out of him that, to me, shows more rust that needs to be worked out and he'll continue to get better as he get's through that. Staal on the other hand was a downright disaster out there, looking lost most of the time on the ice. He looks like the rookie D-man out there.

Starting to think Foagarty makes it and one Andersson / Chytil goes down

If it happens, shouldn’t be Andersson down.

Chytil has some growing to do but he’s absolutely dynamic at times. Let’s get him acclimated.

I believe both should make the team. Tonight will decide Andersson’s fate. He’s one of the best forwards on a weak roster for this game. Let’s see how he carries the torch.

zibanejad just needs to stay healthy and he'll prove what kind of player he is. total horse. deadly shot. I question his desire to win I do but his talent is without question. definitely my favorite current Ranger.

I hadnt realized that we let Kosmachuk go. He was great at the AHL level. On waivers today. Not saying we should claim, just saying.

I know that Gettinger can look painfully slow at times. That is the curse for big forwards in this league right now. Just look around the league, it’s possible to filter guys at nhl.com based on size. How many 6’5+ forwards will dress for opening night? 6? 8? 10? It could just be 5-6.

But Gettinger isn’t a bad player. He is smart and definitely utilize his abilities fairly well. It will be interesting to follow what he can do to improve the coming years. As forwards grow smaller and the game become faster — the more Pionk sized Ds we will see in this league. It’s not optimal having a 5’10 D defending against a 6’6 forward around the net. Could see a breaking point here were guys like Gettinger become a little more valuable...

Name the surprise roster move...

I’ll rock out with Lettieri (deservedly) grabbing a spot...One of Meskanen/Lindqvist will pull an Alexei Bereglazov and go back home, never to be heard from again.

There can’t be a punchers chance in hell Fogarty makes this lineup.

McLeod sticks until November when Beleskey returns.

O’Gara is a surprise keeper on the D. Claesson doesn’t make the plane.

Quinn thinks that Hank can play into his 40s, looking at his shape at least.

But I think that is the big question, the things besides his shape. The game is ever changing. Ziba commented on it, you have to slim down a lot to keep up nowadays. I don't think its a matter of reflexes or natural age making someone like Hank slower. That is so marginal. The big challenge is to constantly learn everything new that the other guys around the league is picking up on. The job between the pipes can be somewhat "easy" -- if -- you have the fundamentals in place to handle it. But as soon as you don't have that -- it mentally becomes a completely different challenge. You are the last out post and if you every night have to wonder if you can get the job done its so hard to stay confident and focused.

Its not an overnight thing, but lately Hank has definitely started to look more and more like he does NOT have much margins in relation to the above mentioned tipping point. I think Hank -- more or less -- this fall have to start showing that he can settle down and comfortably be a really solid top 10-15 goalie in this league, or I think its just a matter of when not if guys like Georgiev and co will start to challenge him for real. 1 or 2 or even 3 years, its happening sooner rather than later. But if he can really just dump those mistakes when shots from distance beats him despite a clear lane and the 5 hole goals that looks savable and really right the ship -- sure, why not 4-6 more years. But this haven't been the case lately. Its hard to point at a specific reason for why he will be able to do it right here and now. But it has to be done now or we can rapidly dismiss the idea of him being able to be counted on for a good number of years. Might a more solid defensive scheme give him enough increased support to accomplish this? Maybe.

Lindqvist can go home via clause in his contract. Meskanen doesn't have that--we'd either have to loan him out or agree to mutual contract termination.

My hopeful surprise roster move is that Staal is a spare 7/8 D. He's done nothing to deserve being a starter besides having lengthy service as a NYR.

Its time for Marc to retire after this season. Klein did it. Nash did it. Its not all about the money.

Marc's experience is valuable to the kids in the lockerroom. I think we are so fed up with screw-ups on the blueline that we maybe projects Staal's issues to be a bit bigger than they are, who doesn't think: Staal again? WTF???? Mistakes will always happen and happen to any D. With that said Marc has been out on the ice with a thought to just get by for a long time now. This is the NHL, it don't work. I am sure he could have 3-4 more years in him if he could go out on the ice without a thought on protecting himself and more of a eat barbwire for breakfast type of mindset.

There were some talks about a need to also hold vets accountable going forward. This is a perfect example. Would we allow Pionk to play at 75 per cent if he got concussion problems? Never. Very unfortunate and what not, he should get all the support he could get off the ice and so forth. But to play you must be 100 per cent.

Who knows, but in the interviews he gave during the summer it didn't sound like Lindqvist would want to return to Sweden if he didn't win a spot in the NHL. I think its one thing if you are still so young that you are growing into your game and body.

I think the decision to cut Lindqvist is very very easy, with that said I do think he have done OK late in camp. For a kid like Lindkvist that is a bit of a late bloomer and just recently have grown into a SHL costume a lot can happen during a calender year or two. If he returns to Sweden I think it equals a decision to forget about all NHL dreams. If he stays in the AHL and works his but off for a year or two I wouldn't at all rule out that he can push for a NHL job.
