And here's the thing, Namestnikov might very well be a bust for us.

The reality is that we will have busts during this process. It's not even a question.

Obviously, the hope is that we win far more than we lose, and as many young players develop and hit close to their potential as possible. But there's no way we're coming out the other side of this endeavor with a perfect record. It's just not going to happen.

So if Namestnikov becomes a bust, but Howden, Hajek becomes core players, and at least one of the picks we acquired develops into a solid NHL player, that's a win.

Great points. As much as the return, which won’t be able to be fully evaluated for years, I think it was a wise move cutting bait with both McDonagh and Miller when they did. McDonagh is in line for a big payday and has been declining since 2014. Miller is a nice piece who is now overpaid and prone to some brain dead play that can no longer be attributable to youth. Sometimes a trade is about turning a new page in conjunction with the haul.

The Rangers didn’t want to pay Miller who was one year away from group III. The Rangers have the same problem with Hayes. He is free to walk next summer. Kreider will be a group III in 2020. The Rangers have a decision to make on him too in very near future.

Miller got $5.25M per for 5 from Tampa. Hayes wants a higher AAV in a long term contract. Trade Hayes at the deadline.

Kreider? When do the Rangers trade him? Next season is the last season on his 4 year contract. Trading deadline or at the draft.

The Rangers have a very long way to go before they can be a Cup contender. The “accelerated rebuild” talk is such bullshit. The King is the King. When he was the “King” and the Rangers had a much better team around him, the Rangers didn’t win.

Better. but never good enough. We were never strong enough down the middle at any point during his tenure here compared with the teams that won - Kopitar, Crosby/Malkin, Toews, Bergeron, Getzlaf, etc...

We've had some nice players, but nobody down the middle in that ^ stratosphere.

As far as the team looks right now we carry 3 anchor contracts:

Hank, Staal, Smith

And we should trade the following for anything we can get:

Kreider, Hayes, Spoon, Nam, Shat, Vesey.

I have been a supporter of Kreider over the years but his season is off to a horrendous start. He is going to have to show a lot more to be with the team long term.

Quinn benched Hayes in the 2nd game of the season. Brooks wrote the coaching staff is on Hayes to move his feet and skate. That's the reason why Quinn shortened his bench and sat him.

Why didn't Gorton trade Hayes in the summer?

It's not like he doesn't have players who can play center without there being a dramatic downgrade.

Namestnikov and Spooner can play in the middle if Gorton didn't want to put too much pressure on the kids. Spooner prefers playing at center.

We aren't talking about Mark Messier here.

It's Kevin Hayes.

Come on.

Yes I hope we will see some serious line changes @RangerBoy in near future - there are some players who should not be in a top 6 role, and too many passers on the same line. And Brooks also wrote it will be a historic bad start if we lose tomorrow. Although it`s a back to back game and do we have any juice left after intense training sessions in pre season? I`m bit concerned about the players energy level next game.

Hayes should have been dealt months ago said it a million times. Gorton left this team in between for some reason bringing all these guys back and some of the flat out look disinterested in playing right now. Hayes namestnikov spooner even kreider look like they could care less

My only guess is they didn’t like the offers for Hayes, kind of like last summer where we all thought Nash was gone but they didn’t like the offers and held on to him until the deadline. Maybe they’re hoping Hayes has a decent season and the offers are better at the deadline.

Has the play of Names and Hayes been that bad so far to warrant being benched/scratched? I haven't been able to watch the preseason or first 2 games due to work.

I know a new coach is trying to establish themselves and work ethic but after a game in the case of Names and less than 2 games with Hayes possibly be a bit extreme?

Maybe other teams are drawing the same conclusion(s) that you are about Hayes and aren't offering jacksh*t? Have you considered that? :)

He's doing nothing to help himself, unfortunately for him and for us.

...been watching Rocco Grimaldi since he was drafted by the Cats.

Nashville waived him, unclaimed, and he scores the OT winner in his AHL debut for Milwaukee.

Wish we'd give him a chance to break out in a blueshirt. Even the grumpers at the Garden would love him.

It seems more like they have to do with the attitude those players are taking when their skates hit the ice than how they perform. In Hayes’ case, he was one of the better Rangers in game 1 and clearly not as interested in game 2, so that might have been more about consistency than anything.

Gorton didn’t trade Hayes (or anyone) this summer because teams don’t trade futures in the summer anymore, they want to keep their picks in the draft for the guys they really like and they want to keep their young guys to maybe make the team on their ELC, it’s really not that hard to understand

Once the draft passed it was never going to happen.

I don't expect him to be around once March comes around. Someone will pay up for him.

I wouldn't be surprised Hayes is moved before the 20 game mark. A thought to be bubble team might part with a 1st and prospect if the trade happens earlier in the season. I'm sure there are some GM's on the hot seat to make the playoffs and could pull the trigger.
