I thought Hayes was very good yesterday before his pine seating. Maybe I was too drunk?
I thought Hayes has sucked since the preseason began tbh. Even in his o.t. assist I didn't feel like he played that well...held onto the puck too long. It worked out . Doesn't always.

I wouldn't be surprised Hayes is moved before the 20 game mark. A thought to be bubble team might part with a 1st and prospect if the trade happens earlier in the season. I'm sure there are some GM's on the hot seat to make the playoffs and could pull the trigger.
A couple of posters here have alluded to just this. Hayes could be dealt way before the deadline if a trigger happy GM on the hot seat thinks they need a center. The usual suspects will still be circling.

Carolina is starting to get impatient after many years now without playoffs. They definitely have a need at center. They just acquired Adam Fox, whom has unofficially stated that he will only sign with the Islanders or Rangers after his senior year at Harvard. Hayes for the rights to Fox, a conditional 2019 1st and conditional 2020 2nd rounder? The 2019 1st becomes a 2019 2nd if Carolina doesn't make the playoffs this year, and the Rangers get a 2020 2nd rounder if Hayes signs an extension with Carolina; Rangers don't get the extra pick if he goes UFA.

Calgary always coveted Hayes. They also have Rasmus Andersson. 39 points in 56 games as a 20 year old defenseman in the AHL. Not bad. Calgary's front office also wants playoffs after a couple of disappointing years. Andersson and a pick would be my asking price from Calgary for Hayes.

Anaheim could also be a possibility. They like their big skaters there. Forward depth has been an issue as of late for them. They want to win a championship before Kesler, Perry, and Getzlaf are slow and ineffective (it already started for the former two). I'd want Jacob Larsson from them, though he's not as good of a prospect as Andersson is.

Could also see interest from Winnipeg, Dallas, Colorado, and Boston. Ante up, gentlemen.

Looks like Hayes wants to leave asap. If they get rid of him there's room for Lias :)

I like all of these deals. I have a bad feeling Hayes is going to part of a deal with Columbus for breadman. Which if that’s the case the return won’t be what we want.
Maybe the Rangers take back salary in Dubi along with bread man and draft picks.

I hope not as I want to deal him for picks and or young players to keep the youth movement moving forward.

Just a gut feeling

NY sports is in for a real dark time. Thank god for the Yankees

Hayes and Names should be traded before the deadline don’t play people that don’t want to be here

A couple of things to note:

Overall, I'm really liking the staff and just how hands on they are.

That said, there were a lot of dumb f*** mistakes being made through pre-season and the two games so far.

Some of which are systemic and can be understandable. Not chasing in the d-zone, ensuring the right player is applying the pressure and the right support player is there.

But there are others that are amateur hour mistakes. Not getting pucks in deep when you need a change, turning back without full control of the puck because you don't want to engage in a board battle, passes into guys feet when you don't have any pressure on you.

Those are the plays that make me look at a guy and say loser. IE not a player that you will win with.

Currently, and this is a rebuilding year, you have too many guys with potential playing like losers. I hope that this trend changes.

The other element of note- look, these guys on the ice, they're not the smartest bunch. You've got too many players with low hockey iq. If the drive and effort isn't there alongside it, then your tolerance level for players such as this should be near zero. You can't build a winning culture around that.

I've been saying this for years. There are too many "dumb", low IQ players on this team. This really took a big hit when Stepan was dealt. I'm not exaggerating when I say that Lias Andersson is the smartest hockey player in our organization. The team's IQ will improve when he's called up.

I love Kreider and Zibanejad to death. They have tremendous physical tools but really aren't smart hockey players. Vesey is a dumb player. He's not even an NHL'er in the defensive and neutral zones. Chytil has tremendous physical gifts but he doesn't impress me to have above average hockey IQ. That is what is going to hold him back from being an elite 1st liner in this league, IMO.

Fast is the smartest forward we have. Hayes understands the game but his execution is more often than not a half step or full step behind. Howden is a smart player but is still raw. Lettieri isn't a smart player.

Staal understands the game but is often a full two steps behind. Ditto for Shattenkirk, but maybe a step behind. Skjei, DeAngelo, Pionk aren't the smartest players. Smith has decent hockey IQ but gets caught flat a lot.

The point I'm trying to make (and I agree with you), is that the overall smarts of the team are still a work in progress. When Andersson and Howden get more experience under them, the team will be a little smarter.

This is why I was such a fan of drafting Lundkvist and Ragnarsson. Not exactly flashy guys, but they are damn smart players. Kravtsov just looks like the complete package. Smarts, size, skill. I think the Rangers continue to draft high IQ players under Gorton, even if they might not be the most skilled player left on the board.

When it comes to smart players, I think you ignored the only player Quinn has praised for his hockey IQ

I’m sure that Hayes will be traded once the Rangers get an appropriate offer. That’s any time from the end of last season to this years trade deadline.

It’s obvious from the long article that ran in The Athletic about Carolina earlier this summer that they talked to the Rangers. There’s a potential match there as well as Winnipeg, Colorado and Dallas.

It all comes down to the first 20 games. See what you got. See how the players you are looking at are doing. Check back at Thanksgiving.

Yeah I see this as the biggest shortfall within the organization. With regards to Chytil, it's the defensive consciousness or situational awareness that isn't always there. I saw Hank go and school him yesterday on that. But the others as you've noted, it's pretty bad.

I think it's been the failure of the group as a whole to either not develop the smarts, or be relegated to grabbing guys that aren't that bright. Etem from Hagelin. Etem has the physical tools, but the head for the game isn't there, and we're talking basic things. Coverage, and situational awareness.

I agree with the Nils and Ragnar picks, those are good solid options that are playing well against men as 17 year olds because they think the game well. All in all the brass has taken a dump in this regard, whether it was through trades or cap crunch....

The Rangers still only have $1M free in space, but a roster full of guys that are not the sharpest out there.

Thanks, it’s bad. But hey let’s keep the vets because we can’t play all rookies on the blueline... ;)
The good thing is after 2021 the only dman we will still be paying skjei, so we have flexibilty going forward.

Yeah and Hank is off the book too. But I am not loving the idea of these guys being the placeholders until — AFTER — 2021.

Shatty is very good on the PP and OK 5 on 5. I don’t really agree with his haters. But still, he is the 15th highest paid D in the entire NHL. He is not a No 1 defender. We need to start to get rid of these guys to build something new. Go after reclamation projects. We have assets pouring out of our There are always some interesting guys moved for like a 2-4 round pick. Give the kids a shot. We are not getting rid of all 4 vets anyway.

The problem with the Sharks is they have all their futures tied up in other trades

And the young roster players I would be interested in, they won’t move

Reedy and Chekhovich are solid prospects of theirs though

They're also quite lacking in cap space. $300k cap space at the moment. We'd likely need to retain.
