I think this team throws serious money at karlsson and panarin this summer I really do. they're going to unload hayes zucc mcquaid and staal this summer. probably 2 of namestnikov/Vesey/spooner too. DeAngelo too most likely. plus what 3 first round picks this summer at the least.

kreider Zibanejad Buchnevich
Panarin Chytil Kravstov
Spooner Andersson Fast
Beleskey Howden Lettieri

Skjei Karlsson
Smith Shattenkirk
Hajek Pionk

Hank
Shesterkin
Georgiev (does he have waiver eligibility next year?) otherwise uh oh he's probably dealt as well unfortunately

So this " rebuilding" team is once again playing useless vets over the young guys with potential. Nothings changed I see.
Well there are the same guys in same job positions and management so what did you expect? :)

- By the way we have yet to play 1 regular season game - so be patient and see what they decide concerning our blueline and pairings.

Did you see how Shark was dominated in pre seasonn by Vegas last game this sunday @Kovalev27 with Erik Karlsson playing and he scored a goal?

I really really doubt it and it make no sense while we continue the rebuild to sign someone like Erik in my humble opinion, because our highest drafted talent is like the next generation of players - they are outside Erik old age, and with his injury history I would be concerned to actually give him that amount of money he will be asking for.

Him starting the season playing above the 3rd pair, paired with Skjei, is not sort of evidence to the contrary?

That town hall where all of Sather, Gorton, and Quinn could barely contain their enthusiasm towards McQuaid, without any substantial mention of DeAngelo is not a glimpse into how they view them?

And ADA got a ton of ice time during preseason - why do you completely discount this while putting so much emphasis on practice pairs before the season has not even started yet. Let's wait and see how things will play out. The season is long (dark and full of terrors) - got to be patient or you will drive yourself crazy like some of the more wind-up posters.

They just signed him for the role that was missing at RD - should they look gloom and shake their heads in disgust at a public forum?

Ideally McQuaid is the 3RD and IMO he doesn't need to be an everyday player. I see him switching off with ADA and maybe even Neal Pionk at times--unless one of them gets moved early in the year. The Rangers picked up McQuaid for experience, to stabilize the RD and for presence. They wanted a big body on the right side who would take care of business in their own defensive zone--who they could use on the penalty kill and he is one of the toughest guys in the league and that's another element the team lacked.

I would expect that eventually someone on the right side is going to miss games with injuries. Looking at our group--McQuaid, Shattenkirk, DeAngelo all missed significant time with injury last year---so I'm not all that concerned with who is going to play how many games this year or at least not right now.

But back to McQuaid I think the odds are he'll be moved by or at the trade deadline. The only thing forestalling that is a season ending injury before that can be pulled off or the Rangers making another commitment to him. Basically it's all wait and see for now.

If you rotated Pionk, ADA and McQuaid on some sort of schedule that saw them each receiving equal games, how many would each get during the course of the year? I don't do math stuff. Like Pionk-ADA one night, McQuaid-Pionk the next, then ADA-McQuaid, and then back to the beginning.

82 games * 2 spots / 3 persons = 54.67 games each

Lol. Am I on your ignore list? It’s in my post on a page before. Comes to about 55 games each for the full season.

that chytil line obviously is not the 4th line like obviously bro

I will be interesting to see how Quinn divides the 5 on 5 ice time. How much will the top 9 get vs the 4th?

Up until recently I've been pretty convinced that we would see the game evolve into more and more of a 4 line game. But I was quite surprsied to see that the trend the last years have been that the top guys get more and more ice time. An overwhelming number of the top forwards in ice time belongs to teams missing the POs, which isn't strange maybe. If you suck but have a few guys that are great you run them hard. The same trend does not apply to 4th line players who have gotten more ES ice time in general over a long time. But maybe we will see a counter reaction with the top guys?

I am not quite sure we are best served with playing Ziba and co into the ground 5 on 5 and having a 4th sitting for long periods. I think our depth in terms of speed and skill on the depth lines can be a bit of a strength compared to the traditional established teams, i.e. that we might have that blitz ability, and I would rather save Ziba and co for a lot of PP time and late shifts etc.

Thanks. It seems so simple when you do it.

Haha, you know you're not. I just didn't read the whole thread. :)

Anyway, if they did that rotation, I think that would be fairly reasonable. Doesn't even necessarily have to be a rotation as maybe you want McQuaid in for certain games, but just a general plan to keep everyone on target for 55 games. And then you also consider that maybe they trade McQuaid, and all the games after the deadline go to ADA and Pionk. I think it's not ideal but not the worst strategy given the circumstances.

Sather’s little quip about Hayes being in a position to make even more money next offseason than Gorton was ready to pay him this offseason is just horrid cap management.

They’re banking on him maximizing his value as a rental and relying on one of the kids to be ready to take his spot by February. It’s a really bad decision when our C corps is as raw as it as and we only have one legit NHL C, who just happens to have concussion issues.

I’ve been a fan of Gorton’s moves from last season, but this one still bothers me a lot. I’d be more comfortable if we had the wings to help carry the younger Cs, but we don’t.

This isn’t even a rebuild issue either for me. Go ahead and try to get Hughes, Turcotte, or Dach- I’d love to see them in Rangers sweaters. It’s poor insulation for younger prospects on a team that already doesn’t have depth. You need contingency plans, and we don’t have any at C right now.

Totally disagree. You're only looking at it through the best case scenario contingency. If you look at it in a worst case scenario, what if Hayes doesn't perform up to the long-term contract you signed him to? Remember, there were only two options with Hayes: 1-year or 5+ years. In the worst-case, you're then stuck with an awful contract that you can't get out of right when you're top young players are going to need to be locked up long-term. That's also just really bad cap management.

If you really do need to replace Hayes with an insulating type of C, those are available every off-season (ie: Tyler Bozak)... and a UFA you might be able to overpay for a short-term deal to come to a rebuilding team anyway.

Yup, when we play Flyers, Isles, Caps, Habs I’d like McQ in the lineup.

Just some food for thought for the people freaking out that McQuaid looks like he's in over ADA - could it be because our first game of the season is against the team that concussed 2 of our players in under 2 minutes last season?

I am in a bit of a hurry but I think they would get cos((82^3)/3)= 3 147 424 games each.

McLeod was in the lineup in that game. Didn't help. I doubt the Predators will see that McQuaid is in the lineup and suddenly not play hard.

Pionk better be on his game from the start. I can see him being the guy shuffled out of the lineup and possibly to the minors since he doesn't have to go thru waivers.

Maybe the idea behind ADA's preseason games was to increase his exposure so they could see if any team out there wanted to trade for him?

I am patient, I'd rather see all of Howden, Lias and Chytil getting bigger minutes in the AHL than see them up with the NHL where they will get to play behind Zbad and Hayes. I think the Rangers playing them in the NHL sort of shows their impatience.

ADA and Pionk, even Lettieri is a little different they are all in the last years of their entry level deals, their older and all have spend a decent amount of time in the AHL.

As far as a rotation goes, when has that ever happened? Coaches use what they think is their best line-up, they have a depth chart and mostly stick to it unless injuries take place or unless someone literally plays themselves out of the line-up and even then they give that player if he is a vet a huge stretch of games to see if he will snap out of it.

Why it is always, "let's see how this or that plays out"? We have been through this or that playing out and those who brought up concerns before this or that played out have for the most part been correct in having those concerns, one does not have to look that far back to find examples, just as recently as the McQuaid trade to the Rangers thread where people were saying he was going to be handed a spot on the playing line-up and he may be used above the 3rd pair, and it meant choosing between ADA and Pionk for playing time, where those concerns ill founded?

Gorton should be calling Buffalo about Alex Nylander.

He has been rushed by Buffalo and have 2 worthless AHL seasons behind him. But he definitely have some underlying offensive potential. In these cases its often easier to deal a suspect for another suspect and we maybe don't immediately have a candidate to send Buffalo's way and they probably aren't to eager to give him away, but as a RHS and good PP player ha makes some sense for us. Vesey for A Nyls?
