I will never forget that time you grilled me for spelling it Gilmore EVEN THOUGH it was a Happy Gilmore reference.

well, stop using dated obscure references and we won't run into these problems.

Making my way through the stream from earlier...

Not as dumb as I thought it was going to be but still pretty dumb.

We get it, the guys in the room think this team is going to surprise everyone. Guess what? So does every other team that the pundits are choosing to be really bad.

JG OTOH pretty much confirmed that he doesn't expect a whole lot. Spoke pretty openly about adding more picks/prospects along the way once the market calls for it.

Yes I do, but I was assuming that Skjei would be our 1LD and to me, that currently looks like Smith.
Interesting to see how minutes will be shared when the season is at 10 game mark. I’m more willing to give the coaching staff and front office a benefit of a doubt than @silverfish , but I also question why Skjei - Shattenkirk is not a first pair. Even if Smith - Shattenkirk is a first pair (I can accept this) McQuaid shouldn’t be on the second pair either. Most of us admitted that Pionk would be more appropriate getting 3rd pair situations, however it should not be because McQuaid is in top-4. I’d be willing to tolerate Staal - McQuaid on some nights when Skjei, Shattenkirk, Smith and either Pionk or ADA are in top 4.

I disagree a bit here. Shatty/Pionk/ADA is a very very one dimensional right side, I know Minny once had three offensive RDs, Burns, Zidlicky and MAB. But Burns’ still 6’3. That three would probably be the most one dimensional right side of a blueline that ever have hit the ice in the NHL for any longer period of time.

For me McQ complements out right side just fine. RD with size and no term, that we in addition can make a profit on — if he stays healthy — at the deadline.

The problem for me is Shatty. He is 30 soon. Offensive PMD. Just like ADA and Pionk. We have room to retain a little salary over 3 years, especially when Smith is mounting a comeback from the dead. Shatty would surely bring us back a 1st round pick, possibly even two if we add a bit, and offense from the right side would hardly be this rosters biggest concern I can guarantee that. Smith can also slide over if one goes down or need to sit. Gorton should be out there pushing a Shatty trade. LAK? LAK have still not replaced Voynov. Shatty @2m retained, Vesey and a 2nd in 20’ for LAKs next two 1st in November. Getting a 1st in November/a year in advance can be a lot more valuable than one at the deadline. Look at Calgary’s and Ottawa’s trades last season. Teams can fall through...

I would like to see a ton of pressure, speculations in media and what not about a Shatty trade. Give Gorts the gonads to do it! Stir things up. Had Shatty been here 6 years he would have been traded by now.

Great post! A lot of good points starting with McQuaid type was needed at the RD, as in you noted - our other RD are pretty one dimensional. Another good point was that Shattenkirk was the vet blocking ADA, not McQuaid (though I’m not as set on trading him this season). As I noted in my post to @Tawnos I'm surprised by Skjei - McQuaid pairing and hasn’t seen a justifiable explanation.

Gorton was asked about the next step in the rebuild and about acquiring younger assets/young players/draft picks. He said now is not the time to acquire younger assets but they want to acquire more. That comes later in the season. Teams don't make those trades until the trading deadline.

Kevin Hayes. Gorton said the Rangers pushed the decision off because they want to see how their young guys perform and they couldn't find the right number for both sides. It doesn't sound like the Rangers aren't interested in paying him. Sather also chimed in on Hayes. Sather said Hayes will get more in free agency than Gorton is prepared to pay him. Gorton just looked at him with a smile on his face. The Rangers like how the young centers have performed. Gorton and Sather really like Hayes personally but they aren't paying him. Gorton also said the situation may not be right for Hayes to sign long-term in NY with all of the young centers in the organization.

Free agency. The 50 year season ticket holder was lamenting the loss of Grabner and Nash. He asked about the Rangers going into the free agent market next summer and why didn't the Rangers get into the free agency market this summer. Gorton said the timing has to be right and it depends on how the other pieces fit/are ready. Timing is the key. Sather had a made a point earlier about the 8 or 9 year contracts being crazy and he blamed the union. The max contracts are 7 for a free agent but you get the point. Sather said 8 and 9 years is a long time. 7 years is a long time too. The timing isn't right next summer.

Howden. If Howden is not developing and not playing much, the Rangers will send him to Hartford. Someone asked about Andersson and Howden. The Rangers sent Andersson to the AHL to get him more ice time and wouldn't Howden be in the same situation needing to play more. Gorton said good question and yes.

It was interesting.

Chytil lasted one and a half games last year to start the season so the roster is far from concrete in terms of who made it.

I was at a town Hall tonight at the Beacon. Last time i attended this was when they first got Higgins and Brashear. Drury was also on the club. They all attended. Tonight's panel was very different. No players.

also... Why are we paying top dollar for drinks? Was free last time. 2 drinks $30. WTF!

With that said pretty good event. Some good questions were asked. Someone mentioned sliding contracts. They got a kick out of that.

Another guy planned 13 road trips so said to Quinn you better win!

Quinn by far is the best speaker of the bunch. You can tell he's a good communicator with the club. He was the same way with the fans tonight as well as with Gianone. I like what Quinn said about expectations. He said we just want you to do what you've done before. He was talking about Shatty.

Sather was pretty funny, calling out Smith for being out of shape. Of course he said he worked hard in the offseason etc, also siad he wouldn't recognize him on the street he looks that different.

I would have paid someone to ask “how much are y’all willing to throw down for Panarin next July?”

All the questions were from season ticket holders who could be identified, targeted, and destroyed by Dolan.

thanks for these! I predict that once Nieves is healthy, if not earlier, Howden will get sent down unless he has an Oscar Lindberg-esque rookie start. Sounds like they want Hayes to play to get paid - not making sense long term, they couldn't get him to sign a 2 or 3 year contract so he'll go into free agency and they'll want him to pump his value up so they can flip him at the TDL for a 1st+ I agree, 7 year contracts are bonkers. I remember thinking after the 1st year that Valeri Kamensky's 4 year contract was too long  and I was initially excited by the signing.

Sather is a big believer in second chances, so I’m sure he’s pulling really hard for Smith.

A lot of little, interesting waivers/roster limits based trades recently. You’d think we could do something about either our bottom four D or our lack of RHS D prospects in Hartford
