Panarin wearing McDonagh's old number will be interesting.

What I'm wondering is what number Shestyorkin takes. I don't think I've seen him wear any number other than 30. Can't find any record either of him wearing a number other than 30. Thats the disadvantage in wearing a number because of a player. If you end up playing with that guy, you aren't going to be wearing that number.

Every team, no matter what stage they're in, should have a good mix of youth and veterans. "Play the kids!" no matter what's going on is a dangerous mentality.

I'm not arguing for or against Andersson. I'd like to see him play over garbage like Vesey, but he didn't really do anything in camp to earn a spot, either. As @Go Away Staal said, what we're doing on defense is waaaaaay worse, but ADA and Hajek weren't taken 7th OA so nobody is going to flip their **** over it.

But the point is, throwing kids into the fire who clearly aren't ready is even dumber and causes more damage than blocking them with useless veterans.

I agreed with so much of this, but anyone who can honestly say that Vesey outplayed Lias (in preseason) or brought anything but that same ol’ stale bread is completely out to lunch.

He didn't, and if the season gets going and we're playing Vesey in the top 6, but "didn't have a top 9 spot for Andersson," I'm going to be very upset.

We'll see what Quinn does with Vesey.

Derick Brassard wore 61 his whole life, got to Columbus, Rick Nash is there.

Moves to New York, Rick Nash is there.

Moves to Ottawa, Mark Stone.

He finally gave up and took 19.

I'm not so pissed because I don't wanna Vesey anywhere near one of the rookies, Hayes can carry his dead body and still be good.
Hopefully it will be one of those cases that he plays less minutes than his line mates.

Ditto, we shall see.

Though for all of the griping it’s good for Lias to know he can be THE GUY down there. Let’s hope he takes this and just runs away with it.

Not only is he paired with Claesson in practice, but Quinn has Pionk manning the point on the PP2 unit - where ADA would likely be if he was in the lineup.

Spooner playing LD on the PP doesn't make sense.

I guess Quinn is desperate on winning his first NHL game and ADA makes him more nervous than McQuaid.

Yeah that doesn't make sense at all, Vesey should be replaced by any right shooting player in the lineup (Lettieri, Fast). If Pionk and ADA are in at the same time, ADA should man the point and Pionk take the left circle position.

I'm fine (not happy, but fine) with McQuaid being in the lineup over Pionk. I'm very much not fine with DeAngelo sitting since he was our best 5v5 defenceman by far in pre-season.

People would be upset if they kept up some forward prospect just to healthy scratch them to play McLeod over them, rightfully so, correct?

But them healthy scratching a prospect in ADA to play McQuaid should not upsetting?

Lias not making the team is okay because he needs big minutes in the AHL, yet Chytil, Howden do not?

Chytil, Howden played well enough to have a NHL spot, but one of ADA Pionk did not?

Overall my angst comes from what I see as contradictory moves on the Rangers part.

I know it seems like I am making way too big of a deal out of this, and in a way I fully admit I am over dramatizing it, I just really think the focus needs to be on the rebuild in terms of development more so than on anything else and I am unsure if the moves they seem to be making jive with that, and being this is kind of like the first glimpse into how coaching and the GMs are playing things going into the first organization admitted rebuilding season, it's just not really the feeling or look I was hoping for.

Only thing I will say is that not all prospects develope in the same way and to treat them all the same way could be more detrimental than anything.

What may work for ADA may not work for Chytil and Howden and vice-versa

They didnt have a top 9 spot for Andersson because he is a center, (and they didn't want to move any of the centers that made the roster to wing); the Rangers winger depth is not good. People are too on edge about Andersson. Quinn is going to give Vesey rope, and we will see if he hangs himself with it. He doesnt have to be committed to him.

I've been researching some top-10 picks in the last 12 years and found a bunch of centers who weren't NHL regulars in their D+2 season.

- Logan Couture played junior hockey for 2 years after being drafted
- Kyle Turris started in the AHL in his 2nd season
- Brayden Schenn played junior hockey for 2 years after being drafted
- Nazem Kadri started in the AHL in his 2nd season
- Nino Niederreiter started in the AHL in his 2nd season
- Derick Brassard started in the AHL in his 2nd season
- Bryan Little started in the AHL in his 2nd season
- Mikael Granlund started in the AHL in his 3rd season

All top-10 picks who needed a bit more time to develop. I have no problem with Lias starting in the AHL with Chytil starting in the NHL. I don't look at Howden because he is a different player with a different role on the team. I expect Chytil and Lias to both play in the AHL and NHL this year.

I do. Chytil played with very good linemates and was completely overwhelmed. Lias played almost exclusively with AHL players (Vesey is an AHL player masquerading as an NHL:er) and the few minutes he got with good NHL players (Fast & Zuccarello) the results were great.

Chytil couldn't even get decent results with Zuccarello (and he got three times the TOI with him compared to Lias) and the only situation where he wasn't steamrolled was playing on the wing of Kreider and Zibanejad, which is a position where you could get decent results out of Randy NcNaught.

I agree with Chytil getting better linemates during pre-season but in the end, neither of them is ready for a top-6 role in the NHL. Both would benefit from some time in the AHL. Chytil is not the blue-chip prospect some fans make him out to be. He's good, but has a long way to go still. And I honestly think both will see AHL time this year, not just Lias. In the end, they only had room for 1 of them, and they went with Chytil. I would have gone with Lias personally and then Chytil on the wing but Gorton is convinced the guy he drafted as a LW is a future center so Chytil gets the nod.

Chytil is probably not spending more than 3-5 games in the NHL before being sent down unless something dramatically changes compared to pre-season.

True, but it just seems kind of strange. I am just going by the preseason games, but it kind of seems like in one instance they are sort of rushing Chytil and Howden, and in another instance they are likely stagnating any development from ADA.

Out of all the prospects the only ones I see as being put into a position to succeed are Lias, Pionk and maybe Lettieri. That is based on my opinion that Chytil and Howden are going to have trouble on the defensive side of the puck and I think the other teams when given the chance are going to find ways to create a favorable match-up against those two. Add Lettieri to either of those two's wings, and I think it probably compounds the issue where as if he had vets on his line only he'd probably have an easier transition. Perhaps my read is incorrect, I guess we'll see.

To state my previous post in clear terms; Chytil should be in the AHL and Lias in the NHL. Unequivocally.
It’ll happen soon enough. None of the younger guys will be staples in the AHL/NHL for a full season. Neither are fully ready for a full NHL season.

I really do not know much about how the AHL functions

Say they do send Chytil down sooner or later, does he take the top center spot in the AHL that Lias is going to likely play in the mean time, or does he get put lower as it seems like it would be kind of insulting to Lias just to first not make the NHL roster but then have to give up his spot as soon as he may be acclimating to it? What if they do send both Howden and Chytil down, Howden also ends up above Lias?
