Why couldn't the Rangers and Hayes come to an agreement for longer than one year? The Rangers are swimming in cap space. They could have given him an extra $500k-$750k per in a longer term deal. How much is the term? NTC/NMC. Hayes isn't worth that type of contract. Nearly $6M for Hayes? I know the cap is nearly $80M but Hayes isn't worth $6M. There are so many teams saddled with bad contracts in this league. The player isn't worth the money and then their fan bases try to peddle that junk on the trade forum on this board.

The Rangers are committed to playing their young guys. Even if they struggle this season, they are up and down. That shouldn't be factor on what the Rangers do with Hayes. Young guys are supposed to struggle. Chytil is 19. Andersson is 20. There will be growing pains. Howden is 20. The Rangers need to be smart here.

FWIW Hayes will carry a big load for us this year--at least until he's moved. He will probably get the pwp time and he'll be looked at for matchups and penalty killing. I know some think that Chytil's going to walk right into the 2C job but IMO that's Hayes job to lose. Everything is in place anyway for Kevin to have a big year and if his numbers go up he might change the equation. To me--this is probably his last chance but maybe also the best chance he's ever had to take the next step.

What doesn't make sense? If Hayes says "I am worth over 5 mil, Rangers are a bit skeptical and give him 1 year contract to show that he can break out from being a 40-50 point player to a 55-70 point player. So if Hayes is struggling midway through the season they maybe extend him or trade him, but if he is playing great maybe they extend him at the money he was looking for.
That’s now how it works

He’s very clearly worth the 5 million a season. If he was looking for 5 million a year a deal probably woulda been done.

And if he grows into a 55-70 point player as you’re suggesting, they’ve shot themselves in the foot and won’t sign him anyway. He’s not going to extend mid season for the money he was looking for in the summer

He’s going to say, “okay, you can either pay me 7 million next summer, or I’ll find someone that will”

As always, people are ignoring the obvious, and that is when Kevin Hayes gets ice time, he's going to produce. Situational ice time is important. This guy got less PP time last season than Desharnais. Is Quinn going to keep Hayes off the PP? Probably not. We don't have the bodies ahead of him that we had last year, and more importantly, we don't have AV. Second on the team last year in 5v5 p60 (behind Spooner), and 11th on the team among forwards in PP TOI.

So when this guy is popping off points at the beginning of the year and all the taeks are "Wow, 'lazy' Hayes comes to play in a contract year and not before? This guy is selfish and totally screwing over the Rangers." maybe don't post that, and realize that he's probably just on the ice more than he's ever been, and producing at the rates he always has :dunno:

this is just my own speculation but I have to wonder if the issue with signing hayes long term was more about where he fits on the team. Is he going to be a 3C? will he step it up to the next level and become a 2C? Will he not have a spot in the middle after the kids emerge? Hayes no doubt wants to be paid like a 2C so now he's got a year to prove he can take it to the next level. while the rangers buy themselves a year to see that chytil, anderson, howden are the real deal

The way I see it is Gorton will most likely offer Hayes a long term contract at a team friendly cap hit. They will have another half season to evaluate him and see how e does with a larger role. If he accepts it that’s fantastic. If his demands are in line with what Gorton wants then they have a prime asset to move st the deadline. Should be a win-win

There are a lot of variables here. How will Chytil + Andersson look @ Center? Will either player even be used as a Center?

What about Zibanejad? If he gets injured again, do we maybe trade him and re-sign Hayes?

Nobody really knows. This is going to be such an interesting season because of all the question marks we have.

If Chytil and/or Andersson prove they can handle playing Center, then the writing is on the wall for Hayes.

Panarin-Chytil-Kravtsov. Why the heck can't that be an elite line in 2-3 years?
Then Buch-Zib-Kreider as second line or even line 1A/B albeit that can change in 2-3 years.

I think you basically answered your own question.

Do you give Hayes NMC/NTC and then pay him this to be your 3rd line center $6m for 4-5 years (after 1-2 years where he’s a top6 forward)?

no, I give NOBODY NMC and at best a limited NTC. I think he would center 2nd line unless there are changes.

Good luck signing UFA's and, to a lesser extent RFA's, with that philosophy. If other teams are offering it, and they are, the Rangers have to offer it too or people won't sign here.

then they plan on sucking and mailing it in and I don't want losers like that on my team.

You obviously have no idea what it takes to become a professional athlete or staying one.

neither does Marc Staal, Brendan Smith and a bunch of other players who managed to dupe some GMs into giving them terrible contracts and all of a sudden they start playing like crap. I am not taking chances, and I think Gorton might have learned his lesson as well.

And if he says that that is fine because the Rangers trade him at the deadline for a maximum value if he is on pace for that many points by the trade deadline.

Marc Staal was playing like crap before he got that contract.

Marc Staal hasn't been a decent player since round 2 against Pittsburgh in 2014.

His game tailed off after. I attributed it to possibly fatigue since he had gone a long while with out playing a bunch of hockey (Missed half of 2011-12, Most of the 2013 season) but it was really just the beginning of the end.

Then you’re not likely to entice Hayes to sign without it because the righting is on the wall - once any two of Ziba, Chytil, Andersson or Howden become better than Hayes, he becomes a $6m 3C and you bet the Rangers would try to move him to get help elsewhere needed. Why would Hayes sign without NTC and risk being shipped where he wouldn’t want to play?

So is it Panarin for Zucc or something? That would be interesting, since Tortorella and Zucc are really thrilled about each other :skeptic:
