Jeff Marek was a guest on Vince's podcast

Marek said the Rangers need more depth on D. Everyone coming back healthy. Brian Boyle. The Rangers need more depth on D. Vince wants them to add another RW for the third straight season. Duclair? Really Vince? I am convinced Vince doesn't watch much hockey outside of the Rangers. When the Rangers aren't playing, Vince isn't watching games on ESPN+. He doesn't watch playoff games.

The Rangers will not have much money with everyone healthy and you want everyone healthy because the Rangers aren't finding better players in trades. These old guys aren't better players than Kakko and Chytil.

49 days since the Rangers started using LTIR. Those are 49 days off the NHL calendar. 192 day season. The Rangers aren't able to accrue cap space. The Rangers will be in LTIR for a while more. The Rangers were looking at $3M of cap space at the trade deadline before the injuries hit. They are looking at much less right now.

How have the LTIR moves affected the Rangers deadline cap space? Do we know what they’re looking at now?

I agree they need to add a big body on D. Jones should be the 8D come playoff time. Could also use a C/RW middle 6 type to slide around, but if Chytil and Kakko come back healthy, that’s more of a luxury to protect against injuries.

San Jose has one retention spot left. Burns and Karlsson occupy 2 of the 3 spots. The media has a fascination with Duclair. When Florida was looking to move him last summer, there was speculation Calgary would be interested in Duclair to reunite him with Huberdeau. Florida traded Duclair to San Jose for Lorentz and a 5th. Not exactly a blockbuster return. The fans and media like Duclair more than the teams.

I would rather have Wheeler than Duclair. A bigger body. Right-handed shot. All of these people love speed and finesse. Those speed and finesse players melt into the ice in the playoffs. They disappear. Maybe they have a few moments but you need the big players to win.

I am rooting for Wheeler to keep racking up the points with Mika and Chris. Five points in the last four games. It has been a tough adjustment for Wheeler going to a new team after eleven season in Winnipeg. All of these players. We saw it with Tarasenko and Kane last season. Coming to a new team. Different role. Other players on the team lose their spots. There is a human element. When someone leaves your office and someone else comes in, it's not always easy. The new person has a different personality. Boyle was discussing that element on the pod a few weeks ago. This isn't fantasy hockey. The new guy comes into a new team and he isn't playing on the first line or first unit PP.

Kane looks the same as last season. He can still pass and shoot the puck. He can make plays when he has time and space. Just don't ask him to do anything else.

The Rangers don't need another player to play on the first unit PP.

Wheeler at $800,000 plus $300,000 in bonuses or Duclair at $3M which needs 50% retention. Give them Wheeler. He has already achieved the $300,000 by playing 30 games. He got $100,000 each for playing 10, 20 and 30 games.

Kane was never supposed to be asked to do anything else other than produce offensively and elevate the play for his teammates on his line. That’s why you build a roster where the other players are taking care of the other parts of the game, even on his line.

Say what you want, but Kane is STILL producing and doing it on a mediocre Detroit team.

Makes minimal money. Just saying.

Let's live in this alternate reality where Lindgren shouldn't be 100% untouchable. People keep alluding to this idea that the Rangers are, to their own detriment, unwilling to move guys if it would be disloyal or disturb the camaraderie. Can someone give examples of recent in-season trades where teams were in cup mode and did give up a significant piece off their roster? And no, 1994 isn't recent. I'll hang up and listen.

Ryan Callahan in 2014

Was there some quote or indication from Chytil not long ago (i.e. within the calendar year) that he takes concussions very seriously? I feel like there was, but am not able to track it down now.

That would lend itself to both parties just wanting to take extra precautions, as opposed to him having setbacks during his recovery.

"Hey NBD just be generational like you always have please, our guys are not good enough on their own so they need someone to make them better. Help us Obi Wan Kenobi, you're our only hope!"

That statement is contradicting of itself. Kane has looked cooked. He looked cooked last year, many of us were saying that last year. Major hip surgery on a 35 year old after a track record of it not working previously? This isn't a Marvel movie haha.

The worst part for Kane really is the Cap situation and timing. I don't doubt his sincerity in wanting to be here, play for cheap, and be a part of the ride to help these guys get there. I don't think even he's under the impression that he's coming to be Showtime. That's what's getting sold to fans though, and it's unrealistic. He got exposed last year for his older age.

Been a huge Kane fan his whole career, and I believe he's the greatest American to ever play as of now, but this was a bad idea from the start last year.

How have the LTIR moves affected the Rangers deadline cap space? Do we know what they’re looking at now?
It's impossible to say how much cap space we'll have at the deadline. It depends on what moves we make between now and then. However, it's unlikely that we'll have much space at all.

Cap space is calculated on a daily basis. The cap ceiling divided by # of days in the season determines how much each team can spend each day. Whatever isn't spent out of that is saved for later use.

When we have someone on LTIR, the amount we are allowed to spend each day goes up. However, if we are spending more than the normal daily amount and using the LTIR cap space, we are no longer saving cap. LTIR cap space can't be saved.

Imagine the cap allows us to spend 1 mil per day. We are spending 990k per day. We'd be saving 10k per day. Then we place someone on LTIR and are allowed to spend 1.02 mil per day. If we don't replace that player, we are still spending 990k and saving 10k. If we replace that player and are now spending 1.01 mil per day, we aren't saving anything. Once the expenditure goes above the cap ceiling, we stop accruing cap space.

That wouldn't matter if Chytil and/or Kakko were expected to be out for the rest of the season, but both are expected back before the playoffs. We'll see what happens with Chytil. His injury could conceivably keep him out longer just due to the nature of it. If Chytil is out until the playoffs, then we have whatever LTIR cap space he provides us, which is around 4 mil (the exact calculations are complicated...it's not a straight replacement of cap hits).

Assuming both Chytil and Kakko come back healthy before the playoffs and no one else is on LTIR through the end of the season, we'll probably have less than 1 mil, maybe less than 500k. It depends on when they come back and how healthy we are besides that.

The team is a the very top of the league through 30 games. Absolutely no cap space to bank while relying on LTIR exception that will continue to be the case still for unforeseeable extent. Drury took care of the depth in the offseason. At some point hopefully there’s going to be an internal upgrade when Chytil and Kakko are back. I know it’s fun to discuss roster changes and trades but those of you who seriously think there will be changes above healthy scratch levels (or even 1LD or top-6 RW) are kidding yourself.

What does that first part even mean? So just because it makes sense to add a complimentary RWer to Kreider-Zibanejad to complete the line from an offensive perspective (like literally every team does) that is the same as saying those guys are not good enough? Like what? Just a bizarre take.

I have watched him play. He is moving better than last year. He looks quicker. He doesn’t look cooked and he factually has 6 points in 8 games. And bringing up the cap situation doesn’t make sense either. The fact that we have little cap space to find a complimentary RWer for that Kreider-Zibanejad line coupled with his low salary that will be prorated at the deadline is actually why it would make sense and fit the best with less retention needed than would be for many other options out there, i.e., Vatrano, Duclair, Tarasenko.

Cant wait to be told this is the roster Building thread and the Kane talk should be suppressed, while reading pages and pages about the other guys who will likely be available…

That is a shame to me because while this team is good enough as is to do well in the regular season it is not going to win a cup imo. I believe we are in a 3 year window to win a cup. Afterwards a lot of our top guys will probably be gone or in decline.

Yea, in season trades among 2 contenders aren't very common. I know you said not to reference 1994. But I will say this about 94. The Rangers did not trade away guys like Lindgren and Goodrow. They actually traded skill in Gartner and Amonte for guys like Goodrow.

It's crazy to me how some people see Lindgren.

A solid piece? I'll buy it.

A good solider? Hell yes.

100% untouchable? Hilarious.
It's the marriage with Fox that hinders the team moving forward. The guy is serverly limited, borderline inept, offensively.

With our teams makeup, he should be on the 3rd pairing. He is not going to want 3rd pairing money. He's small.

I want a guy with size to play with Fox. I want a puck mover to play with Trouba. I'm open to solutions. If it means trading Lindgren, so be it

Piggybacking off of what Vally said on that podcast... We need a Alpha Dog on offense. I do not know how to remediate that situation tbh. One of the 'kids' will have to take that role eventually.

but if Panarin can elevate his game to 'Kucherov status' in the Playoffs, we should be alright. We just do not have that Alpha mentality from our vets. Trocheck is that guy but there's limits talent wise

And Marc Methot hindered EK65. With different partners EK and Fox would win the platinum Norris.

I'm just all about moving him before the tape and fun tack holding him together comes off and the Rangers give him a retirement contract they'll regret 3 years in because "muh tuffness".

He still has team control for a year after this one before he's eligible for UFA. A young rebuilding/retooling team has a use for him still. Arizona. Anaheim. San Jose. Calgary. Chicago. Look at those teams and look to get a player back for him that may be blocked but ready for higher responsibilities.

Extend Gustafsson. Miller, Gus, and a young two way LHD is above average LHD depth.

He's certainly not untouchable. Trade him over the summer. Just don't think it's realistic to find a perfect match now. There are too many things working against it like our lack of depth on defense.

EK is not the same talent as Fox. EK was a generational skater. Fox is not.

2ndly.. The meta has changed. Your defenseman cannot be as offensively inept as Lindgren in the top4. Stay CISed.
IDK what your getting at but I'm an ally buds. Now get off my Jimmy Johnson.
