In the end do you think Isles AND Flyers will be 2-3 in Metro? Maybe one of them but gun to the head I’d probably put money on neither.
Yeah, I agree on all that.

If it were me? I wouldn't bet against any team other than Columbus finishing 2nd in the Metro. Including us. If we super cool off and one other team gets hot, it could happen. We maintain 1st, then ANY team getting warmer than the rest grabs 2nd. It's unlikely, but if Washington wins their three games in hand on Philly, then they go from 6th to 2nd. The gap from 2nd to 6th is the same as 1st to 2nd. It's wild.

And it just takes things to click for them, and the Penguins (currently in 7th) will be right back in the picture. Sorokin's a monster, Rod's too good a coach for this to get worse, I have no explanation for Philly. Gritty? LOL

The Metro's a meat-grinder right now, and we're lucky to be above it. The boys should be proud of that.

Rangers need help 5v5 at least in part because we don't even know if Chytil is ever coming back and Bonino as 3C is absolutely terrible
Chytil will be back in February, probably post-All Star Break. If this was the playoffs he'd probably be back already.

They're being incredibly cautious. For all we know he might even be doing the somewhat experimental therapy they give to players with a few concussions in NHL, NFL, and even professional wrestling (where the work on your rotation, balance, and equilibrium), along with additional neck therapy.

Kakko is the wildcard. The other poster said high ankle sprain, I think grade 3 MCL. If it's the former then he should be skating at the very least by late-January. If it's the MCL we're looking at April.

Yeah, I agree on all that.

Carolina is going to have a lot of ground to make up and have to go like .700 the rest of the way. They have a goaltending depth issue for another month until Anderssen comes back.

If a second fox was available you do everything to get him. Imagine Colorado saying no to another Makar.
Of course. If you can afford a youngish top 5 D, you grab them even if you already have one and even if you have to split them because they're the same handedness. Just of course. Hanifin's a better fit as a LD, but he's also not a top 5 D. It's less "of course," and more "I'm listening."

I'm saying that in identifying what's wrong with our supposed 1st line, I don't think it's Kakko's 2 points, Fox's 5 ES points, or Lindgren's 2 points. There's something "off" with 2 of our important guys outside of the PP or PK. We don't have that 3rd piece for that line. It would be great if that was Othmann, but I think we need a guy, even if it's a rental.

I would be internally discussing Hanifin if I were Drury, but I can also disagree with one of the "why's" when doing so. It would obviously be an upgrade, but would it be more of a want than a top 9 C/W is a need? There's some pressure to strike while the iron's hot and go for it this year, but I don't know how much I'd want to pay for the D swap as opposed to signing their UFA and trading our RFA to get something back. If we trade an asset at the deadline, one F could put us over the top more than "a nice D upgrade."

The Canes are 3 points out of 2nd with over 50 games to go. They're in a similar boat to the Devils but with even worse G situation yet better coach. Just look at team point %. Our 6th place would be 4th in any other division. Our 2nd would be 4th in any other division as well. I'm not dying on any team's hill, for or against.

I mean the line functioned the best with Kakko on it, it just wasnt cashing in. Mika and CK shouldn't be shooting 2% at 5v5.

Apparently Zach Parise is looking to come back this year at some point. If the Isles fall out i wonder if he'd be interested in a 1 year deal here.

Gustafsson should definitely be in consideration this off-season. It's not something that'll happen mid-season but he's pushed the issue to me. When Fox went down and his minutes increased he was stellar. I'm a fan of Lindgren, you need those heart & soul sorts of players. Hard decision if it's an either/or this summer.

Though if you look at all the cup winners of the last decade or so.. those teams are loaded with defenders with size that can defend and bring physicality. So I'm kinda torn. When the games get tighter and more physical in the playoffs that stuff is more important. That's where Lindgren comes in. So the playoffs will tell a lot for us.

The thing Gustafsson has going for him is he's not like some of the undersized offensive defenders we're seeing more of. Those guys need to sheltered defensively. Gustafsson does fine in that aspect. He's got decent size, he doesn't really get pushed around out there. He's not gonna be out there blowing people up but he's got a little bit of physicality. He fought Kubalik the other day after the guy hit Schneider. I think if Gustafsson has a good postseason you think about pushing him into the top 4 next year. Bump up K'Andre with Fox and play Gustafsson with Trouba. I like his passing ability next to Tuba.

I guess that would mean a Lindgren trade though. Part of Lindgren's allure is because of his price tag. In the salary cap world you need to compromise. A guy like him that can eat minutes and not get paid much is appealing. Obviously there's gonna be some shortcomings there but that's the salary cap world. I don't necessarily want to trade Lindgren but I don't see Gustafsson getting a big contract either... if they both wind up coming in around ~4 mil or so I think I'd take Gustafsson. But the playoffs will really be the teller there.

Hanifin's an interesting target in the summer if he makes it to free agency. The salary cap is going up, if you move on from Goodrow and Lindgren maybe you can squeeze him in. I don't know, it'd be really tight. You look at what guys like Weegar and Severson got the past year or 2... Hanifin is probably going to be making close to 7 million or more a year. So even if you fit it now, shortly you'll have to worry about extensions for K'Andre, Laf, Kakko, Igor, Schneider... the money would probably get too tricky. You'll still have a couple years until Panarin, Kreider and Trouba's money come off the books.

Fast better keep his head up when the Rangers face Carolina in a few weeks. He concussed Chytil and he needs to answer for that.
Absent the after effects, Fast took the worst of that very clean hit. I doubt Chytil is carrying any kind of grudge.

If someone is asking me what the team needs and we are bargain bin shopping I am probably looking for a Vesey clone. Perhaps a more physical Vesey. Who can find me that player?

They gave Fast a fair offer. He chose to go to Carolina.
I'm confused. Are we running Fast because of his clean hit on Chytil, because he complained about having to do all the work on his lines (true) or because he rejected what some on fanboards think was a fair offer to stay?

I'm not running him for anything. I'm just saying it's inaccurate to say he wasn't valued. They offered him a contract that made sense and he turned it down for one that was a bit better. Nobody is obligated to play for the Rangers.
