The issue isn't that those options as 1-3Cs are not ideal, but the Rangers might have the worst organizational C depth around the league, at least of the playoff teams. At least there are options coming on RW, there is next to nothing for C. Bryce McConnell-Barker is the only guy that stands out, maybe Korczak, as a young center in the organization, and only one of them can be called up.
This is the reason people want someone like Lindholm, Gourde, Henrique, etc instead of adding a RW as a deadline candidate. We can move Chytil out there, you could play one of these guys out there. We added Copp that played center and filled in at times, but was on the wing with Strome and Panarin. You need versatility over 82 games. This team as constructed is missing a lot of that.
Agreed.
I'm a BMB truther, but it's gonna be a while. He should come up with Perreault, imo.
We do have some of the worst organizational C depth in the league, but a very good top 3. I'm hoping that Chytil's early injuries don't impact his career long term, so I'm going to assume he returns to his 40-point level or better. If that gets seriously compromised at any point, then we address it then.
I'm looking into Pinto if I'm Drury. Versatile C/W, possibly affordable in trade, should be cheap on a one (half) year contract, brings what Wheeler was supposed to yet hasn't (except for the leadership and experience, for whatever that's worth).
I want to have 4 top 3 C options and 10 top 9 F options overall. Wheeler and Goodrow having good seasons would bring us to that, but both being "not very good" on a 3rd line leaves us at 3 C and 8 top 9 F overall. Brodz having the time of his life Kind of adds a half to each.
We simply need to add one forward without losing one (since we need to wait for a couple to come back in the first place), and we need to add that one for almost nothing.
Zibs was basically as good or better than Brassard right from the start so that was a really good trade for us. To put it in terms of that Branch Rickey quote it was us trading the player (29 year old Brassard) 1 season too soon instead of 1 season too late.
I'm not looking to give KK away but if KK needs to be part of a package to get a top line forward or a top line Dman I'm open to it. We need top line players more than 40 point players in my opinion.
We traded Brassard at precisely the right time. We were lucky to do a 2015 deal in 2016 (that year earlier would have been the proverbial 1 season too soon). We couldn't have gotten nearly the same return a year later, so it was obviously not a year too late.
We need our middle 6 players to actually BE 40 point players before we need to add a 60+ point player.
The simple way to solve the center issue would be to have (2) guys on the 4th line who can play center which the team has in Bonino and Goodrow. The issue being, it would have been nice to take their combined cap hits and get a couple of guys who make ~$1.5-2m each.
For example:
Goodrow + Bonino = ~$4.65m in total cap hit
Eller + Lafferty = $3.6m
Eller + Blueger = $4.35m
These are just examples
I was calling for this over the off-season as well but Goodrow ties up so much cap space it kills the idea.
In saying that, the team has the highest scoring player in the AHL in far fewer games (at least at the time of his recall) in Brodzinski who is a center. He's been playing wing because that's what the coach wants to do (probably because Bonino shouldn't play wing) but the team has some depth there.
Count me in, yet again, for re-signing Brodzinki right now to a 2-year extension for this very reason. He's cheap insurance that can play wing or center and also lead in the AHL.
I'm okay with dumping Goodrow if it's not costly. If that happens, then I'm down with Vesey-ing Brodz.
