Roster Building Thread - Part VIII (2023-24 season)

I am beginning to believe that the biggest issue right now is 1LD. More than anything else having a completely useless player with the puck who plays such important minutes is having a negative impact. I know he’s Fox best buddy and whatnot but he would be the easiest position to upgrade on considering he’s one the few moveable pieces who are making any money.

They can do both. They just can't be afraid to trade off of their roster which is the easiest way to open up cap. I get that some guys can't be moved and others shouldn't, but there are guys who do exist on the roster who can and should. #55 is such an easy and obvious upgrade spot and thats where I'd start.
We're already trading Lindgren in the scenario being proposed. Would trading, let's say, Kakko make that much of an additional difference?

Last season was a "normal one" for both players, while this season has been a nightmare for Kakko and a dream for Vesey (and Brodz for that matter). Othmann might plug a hole next season. We can find another Wheeler one-year stop-gap, but that's obviously a mixed bag.

We have a hole at RW, and by losing Kakko we'd have two holes. That has me concerned.

There's still possibly a Hanifin trade that makes sense, so it's not like we completely disagree. Good discourse, btw.
Yeah I do think that you have to give to get, I'd just rather send Kakko than Chytil for the same positional considerations. Vesey has a track record of success with Zibanejad and kreider, lafreniere seems to work at RW, to me you just need one other guy who's around that middle six range. Wheeler was not my favorite signing, and plenty of people felt he was cooked before he signed. Maybe we go for a couple 25-30 year olds instead of 32-38 year olds this time. Tatar signed for 1mil coming off a 20 goal season, for example.

It's just not realistic in today's game to expect a defenseman, no matter how talented, to excel to their full potential without a partner who can actually match the minutes they're tasked with. We saw it live with McDonagh. We're seeing Quinn Hughes make a quantum leap from top 10-15 defensemen to Hart trophy candidate the literal moment he got a top pair partner. Makar gets drooled over, but he's played his whole career with a top 20 player in Toews. Bouchard with Ekholm. Lindgren is an OK player, but he neuters Fox in the offensive zone. I imagine part of it his drop off this year is that he's always playing hurt, but that's part of the problem. He has to play with way too much intensity to be effective in a top pair role. It's not sustainable.

What would it take for the Rangers to acquire Hanifan with Lindgren being a main piece? Lindgren is a RFA at years end, Hanifan is a UFA. Assume Calgary retains to make the cap hits equal and Hanifan isn't re-signing in Calgary:

Hanifan @ $3m
for
Lindgren + ________

In terms of raw value, I'm not sure how much more a team like Calgary would be looking for. They could lock up Lindgren at a good cap hit for a good term (4-5 years likely). The Rangers should have cap space this off-season to offer Hanifan a nice contract and they get to see how he fits with Fox before offering him a long term deal. IMO, Hanifan would be a fantastic addition long term even if it's close to the Toews number of $7.25m.
This NEEDS to happen. He would be a major improvement. I would think a mid level prospect and a 2nd but he will def get major interest might cost a 1st if we resign him. But it would be worth it IMO

Would start Quick against Anaheim. He has good numbers against them, and Anaheim is expected to get Zegras, McTavish, and Drysdale back this week,

Anaheim has struggled to score, but still don't feel comfortable with Shesty in there. But then do you leave Shesty for Boston?

Think if we get 3 out of 4 points the next 2 games, that is a huge accomplishment.

Couldn’t agree more. Time to get Fox a true partner.

I feel we are way too reliant on our PP. It is giving us a distorted picture.

Adam Fox is a very good Dman but he only has 4 even strength points all season.
For comparison sake Trouba has 13 even strength points. That is very surprising.

Zibs only has 4 even strength goals. Vinny only has 2.
For comparison sake Vesey has 6 even strength goals. Cuylle has 5. Wheeler has 3.

I wish I had any faith that line juggling would solve the Mika and Kreider 5v5 debacle but outside of shaking things up mid-game it rarely has much impact long term. IMO the Laf/Panarin line has been good all year becauae whether it was Chytil or Troch all 3 players were just playing a complete game most nights and it showed in the results. You can't just take 1 guy who is playing well and put him with two players fighting it to fix it. Very few players in the league can turn poo into gold like that. Mika and Kreider just need to be better, and that's it.

i'm really tired of Lindgren and that beautiful hit he took is a great example. what the f*** was he thinking looking down like that right after passing? braindead player. appreciate all he's done but for god's sake do not do Girardi/Staal 2.0 with him.

There’s a time and a place to discuss trading Lindgren and midseason when they’re top of the division is not that.
he's been one of our worst players this year and he absolutely should not be off limits for an upgrade

I'm 100% on board with upgrading from Lindgren at 1D, but a lot depends upon how much he asks for this summer. If he wants anything more than $4 million on a long-term deal, then that enters the realm of Staal/Girardi2.0.

Either was I agree with Crease it will have to wait until the offseason.

We definitely need more guys who are difficult to play against. The Leafs basically had a walk in the park last night. Their stars were way too comfortable.

That is what happens when you have soft top line forwards and a soft top 6 forwards. It’s a shame Rangers don’t have a Tkachuk or Marchand type. One that can stir it up and get the rest of their teammates in the battle. Passive teams go nowhere. Enough of the stick checking on defense. How about playing physical defense especially in front of the goalie.

Oh you mean like a 1st overall who stirs shit, and throws his body around ? Nah we don’t have anyone like that on our team…

Lindgren isn't going anywhere. He's also not a 1LD by ice time, that's Miller by a good bit.

Lindgren's averaging just 20 seconds less of TOI/GP @ even strength over Gustafsson. PK is pumping his total ice time up.

He needs to be better like a lot of guys but @ 3M he isn't going anywhere @ that value. they need him.

I would think Kakko + Lindgren for sure has you in the Hanifin talks. Is that a chance the Rangers want to take?

You should never be afraid to upgrade a key position, no matter the standings or timing.

The Rangers do have plenty of potential on the wings. Othmann, Berard and Edstrom in the AHL. Perreault, Chmelar and Lamb in NCAA. Absolutely no one on D though.

I think I would do it if an extention is included.

Need more than just Lafy. I wish Kreider had a mean streak. 1 player in the top 6 that does this, is not enough. The ones with good depth have a balance of that. Even a Sam Bennett type would ignite some life in this team. Remember when Avery became a Ranger, someone like that.
