Roster Building Thread - Part VIII (2023-24 season)

As messed up as the organization probably still is, they have a pretty good hockey operation going on. And obviously they would want to sell their players that there's something to play for, if they get them reinforcements as a reward for their good play.
I give Bill Armstrong high marks and Andre Tourigny even higher marks. Despite, the distractions, they have put together a nice club that’s fun to watch. On top of that they have 10 second round picks and 7 thirds round picks (including their own) in the next three years plus five first round picks from the last three years still developing. That‘s a lot of trade and draft capital.

IF Pittsburgh falls out of the playoff race, Reilly Smith would be the best option for the Rangers if Chris Drury is looking for a RW. Pittsburgh missed the playoffs last season. Kyle Dubas made the trade for Erik Karlsson. It was flashy move. The move hasn't worked out on the ice. How do the Penguins have 7 power play goals for the entire season. Seven? Chris Kreider has 7 power play goals. Karlsson has two. Crosby and Malkin each have two. Kris Letang has been marginalized. Katlsson and Brent Burns didn't work out in San Jose. Karlsson and Letang aren't working out in Pittsburgh. Smith has one. Dubas acquired Smith from Vegas for a 3rd round pick. Vegas needed to move the $5M cap hit. Smith has a Stanley Cup ring. He was a valuable player on the Vegas Cup team. Good two way player. William Karlsson and Smith shutdown opponents last season in the playoffs. The Rangers could need double retention depending on their cap situation.

Larry Brooks talked about bringing back the former players. We know the names. He would prefer the Rangers going in a different direction if they need to add another RW for the third straight season. Agreed.

If the Penguins do decide to rebuild (which would be f***ing stupid -- they're shooting 6.6% on the powerplay which is ten shades of unsustainable) they have a lot of pieces I would be interested in.

The Penguins would have to be completely out of the playoffs by the TDL for them to make any moves like that. I don't see that happening. No way first year GM with the 4 guys (Malkin/Crosby/Letang/Karlsson) they have on that team that they strip it down before the TDL unless they are mathematically out.

They definitely aren't rebuilding, and I imagine they will stay close enough to a playoff spot that they won't be looking to sell. But they have to figure out what they are doing with Guentzel. He's UFA at the end of the year. Are they going to re-sign him? Does he want to re-sign?

If I were him, I wouldn't. It's not hard to see that this team is on its last legs. With the cap going up, he should be able to get a good contract from someone else.

He just may re-sign there because of the Crosby factor. I am sure they are close and Crosby doesn't look like he is retiring any time soon.
Plus I would imagine he would cost a lot. Division tax plus he is a multiple time 40 goal scorer. Probably a lot more than what Tarasenko and Copp cost.

The guy I think would have been really good here is Zucker. He has some skill and is a pain in the ass to play against but the Coyotes probably won't be sellers. Plus not sure if we could even fit him in with our cap situation. The Coyotes have already bent us over when it comes taking salary cap off our hands.

I wasn't suggesting that we would trade for him, just that they might be in a position where they'd want to move him.

At least Crosby is still good?
#1 it's not happening. #2 who would wanna see that prick in our uniform. I could not root for that guy. Winning the Cup with him would be nothing like winning the Cup with Messier. It would be like rooting for Tom Brady to win a SB with the Giants.

And even if I didn't personally despise the dude, think of all the negative shit we'd have to listen to if that actually happened. "Rangers couldn't win the Cup with their own players, had to go get Crosby to do it etc". 30 years later & people still call the '94 team the New York Oilers or some version of that.

Lmao you’re kidding right. Like you’re kidding that you really care about what anyone else thinks when we have 1 cup in 84 years. This is laughable and I despise Crosby. I want to see the Stanley Cup.

Also, I would not care if the Giants got Tom Brady the Giants beat Tom Brady twice

He'll be 30 then and you'll need to give him a big 7 year contract. Are you sure you want 36 and 37 y.o. Jack Eichel?
I might want 30 to 35-36 year old Eichel and be willing to roll the dice on the extra year or two. This is all dependent on his play / health until then of course.

Maybe you can get away with

1st, 2nd, Chytil, BMB, Berard/Sykora/Edstrom

For

Crosby @ 50% retained

Trade Goodrow in a separate deal or in the offseason to free up $3+ million + the projected $4 million cap increase, you can spread that out to get a quality middle 6 player if needed**. You may not need with Othmann on the squad. Or now you have money to retain Gus & add a decent 6th Dman around $1-$3 million range

Kreider-Zib-Kakko
Panarin-Troch-Laf
Cuylle-Crosby-Othmann
Vesey-Bonino-Wheeler
Pitlick/Goodrow

I wouldn't care about the bolded.

The team that just won the cup did so with 1 player they drafted on their roster. I get that expansion influenced that but they went out and acquired a shit load of people from outside of the organization after the fact (Eichel, AP, Stone, Barbashev, etc.)

Now I agree that it's not happening. I don't think its worth discussing unless Crosby himself says that he wants out but he's still good. At this point, the Rangers should be looking to add good players unless they come with massive baggage.
