Roster Building Thread - Part VIII (2023-24 season)

The great start will offer the Rangers the luxury to try different people up until the deadline when they will trade for a real player.

It’s hard to imagine Wheeler lasting all season as a regular, he’s a black hole offensively, possession is dying when he’s out there.

Give Brod his turn until he cools down, then Vesey is fine, and even give Othmann a few games in the new year before the deadline.

to stand still is to fall behind
But when you have young players that are developing you aren’t standing still just because you aren’t making trades. Big, good skating, physical, barely 22 year old dman who made the league at 20… team is doing great… let’s see what we can get for him… oh yeah, we actually need Dmen because there’s not much in the pipeline.
Joneses are dime a dozen, Schneiders are not. But we have no need to trade either.

Zegras has 2 points in 12 games, and he’s a one dimensional offense only player at this point. He also would not have gotten the leash and PP1 time he was given in Anaheim. His numbers here would not have been very impressive. This board would be (wrongly) screaming to trade him for an upgrade this year, if not last. He’s still young and I still expect him to be a great 3rd line (if he learns some D) or more likely very good second line player. Much like I expect from Kakko. He may even end up a legit first liner, but so may Kakko.
Laf is already much better than Lundell, and was at least as good if not better last year. Lundell had a great rookie year in his D+2, but has looked lesser since.
Zegras would’ve been on the wing with Ck and Kreider.

I dont know if thats true. Vatrano was bad defensively from what I remember
Vat still stinks defensively and the analytics support it

You gotta think this is the lineup, IF fully healthy post-deadline:

Kreider-Zibanejad-TRADE
Panarin-Trocheck-Lafreniere
Cuylle-Chytil-Kakko
Vesey-Bonino-Goodrow

Lindgren-Fox
Miller-Trouba
Gustafsson-Schneider

Until his first defensive miscue which would likely be early in the 1st period of his first game. Then Quinn gives him the same treatment the other kids got. On the plus side on the NYR he’d probably be a more rounded player by now, but this board would be still be screaming “bust!”

Re Vatrano - hit fit in so well during that run, if they could have afforded him here I wouldve loved that signing.

It likely wouldve been working out fantastically as well. Dude is going to sniff 50 this year

Yep, Wheeler will need to sit lol

how much space will we have at the TDL?

I would say dump Goodrow but we know that's not happening. LTIR Kakko until playoffs?
It's impossible to say how much space we'll have at the TDL, but if we are counting on non-LTIR space, we'll have very little. It will be basically money in/money out at that point. If Kakko (or another player) is on LTIR from the TDL to the end of the season, then we'll have whatever cap space that provides. With Kakko, it's a max of 2.1 mil (probably a little less), so forget adding anyone who has a cap hit higher than that.

Basically, we have to just wait and see how things look in terms of injuries come the deadline.

How many EA sports covers has Kakko been on?

The prosecution rests.

Duclair plays absolutely no defense, he would be a bad fit and everyone here would hate him after 5 games

If he played 3 seasons here and was a +50 in his three seasons with the Panthers, I'd be f***ing happy.

Jonny Brodzinski is a 30 year old AAAA Hockey player.
His 4 assists in two games are all secondary.
In those two games he had zero hits.
He is paid under 800K because that is his value.
He should not be rewarded with anything more than a two year 775K contract. The only reason he should be given that is because he’s the Captain of Hartford.
He is unable to drive play in a top six role and he is not a good bottom 6 player because he doesn’t hit and is unable to sustain puck control down low in the offensive zone.

Need to see how the league plays out when it is closer to the March 8th deadline.
Ron Francis and his Seattle Kraken is an interesting one. Francis is in a non traditional hockey market so he has to put a good product out there to keep fans interested but if the Kraken are on the outside looking in by late February there might be a player out player in deal available for Drury.
Francis has a bit of cap space (around 1.5 million) so he could retain and take back salary.
Probably not popular but Jordan Eberle is a player who always drives the middle and in his last four playoff series he has 45 points in 66 games of which 19 were goals.

Vatrano is bad defensively, and Brodzinski isn’t much better.

People can say that they are similar stylistically but to say they are similar talents is misleading. Vatrano has a plus shot that can beat NHL goaltenders and some speed. Brodzinski just has some speed. I don’t think either one is a top 6 forward on a contending team.
