If we're going to go for a 31-year-old Gourde at a similar cap hit, which will need retention, why not go for this guy?

3 years retention will cost more than we're willing to give up.

It's amazing how obfuscated our cap situation is. I thought we initially would have $3M+ at TDL space ( before all the LTIR )

Jason Zucker
Alex Wennberg

So far those are the guys that make some sense

What use do we have for Wennberg? We don't need a Center. We don't need a PKer. We certainly don't need someone who never shoots. He's a very poor 5v5 scorer. And he costs a lot of money. If you figure we may have enough money to get one player with retainment (and sending some salary back) how is he possibly the guy?

Zucker might be a good fit. He makes a lot of money though and there's a likelihood we would need the contract to be retained twice. Not sure he's good enough to pay the price for that.

If we do add a player it seems possible that the 4th line ends up as Goodrow-Bonino-Wheeler which would be a little bit embarrassing for Blake

There are interesting options. The more I looked at it today though the more it felt like Zegras and Hanifin would be Rangers.

Hanifin is the obvious upgrade to Lindgren and if paired with Fox would probably be incredible. I support signing him in the off-season depending on the money. He can't be looking at any more than 5.5 to 6 yeah?

Zegras is having a tough year in Anaheim. Kakko is having a tough year this year. Perhaps a package of Kakko, Lindgren and/or Goodrow gets them going north in the standings? Can't hurt to get some good vets from a good team and some potential to replace the potential of Zegras.

Hanifin seems like a good Rangers move. Like Trocheck was. Zegras may just be a little more fantasy.

Right now, we are ~$700k over, but we're allowed to be due to LTIR. So for every day that we're legally over, we bank $0 in deadline space.

Hypothetically, if Fil and KK come back the day after the TDL, we will only have the space banked from the beginning of the season to the day Fil went on IR, plus some loose change between When Fil went down and KK went down. Fox's IR made little difference since Jones was already on the roster. We might have lost small amounts for days that Mackey was recalled for insurance, but still.

The injuries shouldn't be that bad, but just to illustrate the mechanisms. We lost a lot of deadline space. It sucks, but last year we were lucky to turn like $500k space into $1.5 deadline since we were pretty healthy. You can't bank on avoiding the injury bug.

If we can make it work without an overpay (trade or salary wise) I'm all about it. He fills that C/W spot to solidify the top 9 that Wheeler has failed to cement. The only issue is not leaving room for Othmann next season, but next season's problem is next season's problem.

Kakko for Vatrano 50% retained and a pick. Who says no?
Guy did really well on line with Mika and Kreider. 1,825 million caphit till 2024-2025.
no, and I am on record as loving Vatrano

Ask yourself if Lafreniere is the kind of player whose form this season might help deliver a Cup.

Now do the same with Kaako.
I ssid don't give away LaF
I was right
Now I'm telling you, don't give away KK
He needs mins w/chemistry linemates
Bonino is not the answer

Would Jones + 1st be a decent starting point for Mangiapane at 50%?

Maybe throw in Berard

If we use our 1st this year, I really would like a player with term. Giving up 1sts for rentals, then letting them walk is not the greatest for business.
Jones has little value.
If we were lucky we could get Nils L back for him

We have to stop dealing our 1sts unless it is too good to be true
Rentals do not count
I said no on dealing them past coupla yrs and I was right
We would be better off long term w/draft capital instead of guys who walked

NYR say HELL no, unless it’s a really high pick.
Yeah, if it was a ridiculously high pick, you have to at least consider it
Otherwise no

Re Vatrano - hit fit in so well during that run, if they could have afforded him here I wouldve loved that signing.
....
Prob there was instead of listening to bern and keeping this guy for 3+ we added horrible scrub depth = ridiculois waste

Eberle is the way to go if Seattle is out of it, and they can make the cap work somehow.
no

Kakko and a pick got for a retained Bjorkstrand. I feel like that’s a move teams like the Rangers and Seattle should be looking to make in their respective positions
Stop looking to give away KK for cheap

Pinto at the right price = ok
possibly solid value add move

Drury can create space, but he has to bite the bullet and move guys this year. Goodrow, Kakko, and Lindgren are candidates. There are two problems:

1) You probably end up spending assets to just to have teams take cap.

2) The whole "don't change a winning team" narrative creeps in.

But you know what? Those are your choices. This is the situation we're in and we've been in it for awhile. Adapt or die.

Rangers should do that but I don’t think Seattle would unless it’s a 1st

I would trade our 1st this year without hesitation for 3 runs with Bjorkstrand in the middle 6. I know the Kakko hive will be after me for that one

If someone will take Goodrow (I actually think it’s possible) you do it no questions asked. Give Trocheck his A, he deserves it more anyway

They shouldn't. Bjorkstrand is a really good player and it was really dumb of CBJ to move him.

Or just have 2 or 3 A's like a normal team LMAO

There are still rebuilding teams out there with plenty of space, who would take an asset to rent some of it out.

Granted, Goodrow's M-NTC could eliminate non-contending teams, but it has to be possible.

Chicago is a very attractive city if you have money and you might accidently score 30+ goals playing with Bedard. They're looking to fill their things n' stuff quota since losing Perry.

I wonder in the summer if they could retain say a million on Goodrow, and someone takes him at 2.6 for the last 3 years?

Take back a 7th or future considerations, whatever.

I know they can go the buyout route, but I’m not sure if he does that considering he passed up the buyout credit for this year already.
