I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but Alex Chiasson has a PTO with the Caps. I know some on here have mentioned his name a few times.

My take on this upcoming season is that Gorton really don't have to do anything. Just sit back and let things evolve while constantly working the phone and looking for angles.

I am not at all high on like going after some so-so center from Toronto or whatever. In the coming years, some of our kids will emerge and become contenders. Our blueline will get younger and better at moving the puck. We have good players on the roster and I think they will keep progressing. Is it enough to win a Cup? No, I mean you always play for it, but a Cup shouldn't be expected.

However I see zero short cuts to winning a cup either. And, I don't think we have to be desperate. After having traded Stepan, we are in a very very good position to improve this roster, either from within, from a trade or UFA. If like a Colorado decides to pull the trigger on a Nate MacKinnon, we could make a heck of an offer to him or whomever becomes available. If not, we can keep building this year and expect our farm to help us next season.

Buchnevich doesn't need another Russian comrade on the team. He spoke to Matt Calamia from the Rangers website last month without any Russian interpreter.

all day, this^.
well said. reasonable, rational, accurate.

Paywall article. Dom the hockey analytics guy hit on all of the major points. The D is much better. Lundqvist will be 36. He may no longer be an elite goaltender at that age. Their backup goaltender situation is a major issue. Their center ice depth is an even bigger issue. Stepan is a huge loss. They don't have a top forward(s) either to mask the issue at center. The Rangers could count on their forward depth last season but that's no longer the case. Dom picked the Rangers to finish 6th in the Metropolitan division. 22nd overall. 90.8 points. Gorton hasn't done anything to correct the flaws upfront. What can he really do anyway? Make a trade. For who and what's the cost?

The major flaws were on the back end last year and we corrected them big time with the moves made and bringing in Ruff.

We sacrifice up front a bit in doing so.

If miller is a center I'm not concerned at all down the middle. If he's staying on the wing I'm not going to like our chances much.

I'm still not ready to declare the defense "fixed". Our biggest issue last year was that we gave up too many goals and, while we have considerably more talent now on the defensive side, it remains to be seen if that will translate into less goals against. Losing our best defensive center isn't likely to help in that regard.

The last 2 years we have been middle of the pack in terms of GAA. That isn't going to cut it if we hope to win the cup.

Hasek was a force well into his thirties and I see no reason why Hank cant be, especially behind a defense that can actually maintain possession of the puck

That really depends on how NHL ready Lias Andersson is... I'm getting the feeling he is, and if that's the case, the top 9 doesn't look bad honestly.

Buchnevich-Zibanejad-Zuccarello
Kreider-Hayes-Miller
Nash-Andersson-Vesey

The 4th line will be a work in progress for a month or two. Fast is obviously a staple there but he's out till November. Puempel has the tools but not the brain, can that change? Who knows. Nieves has the tools, but has a substantial injury history the past 2 seasons. Gropp is a wildcard--is he ready to play?

Rangers are trying to develop their own bottom 6 players. If some of these guys pan out, they are in good shape. The only thing this team really needs is a 3C... Stepan was never a 60 point center. Zibanejad is already a 50 point center who puts up sufficient defensive capabilities.

You're literally proving your own point here. When Hank started to age, the defense showed it's true colors.

Every year this team is supposed to finally bomb and they end up making the playoffs fairly comfortably and winning some rounds.

I understand that the makeup of the team is a bit different this year but I'd bet anything they end up higher than 6th in the division and 22nd overall. They lost Step and greatly improved the D, that doesn't take a playoff team to 22nd.

He could be since physically he seems fine. Last year he had times where he looked really good and some where he looked pretty bad. The really good times show the possibility of great play is still there. He just needs to regain more of his consistency.

I think it'd help him as well as overall cultural dynamic insofar as how they play. They think the game differently than most NA players, which adds a lot with the right guys.

the guy is obviously an idiot

Yikes... might be done then.

I liked him a lot in college. But he's soft... and disengaged... WSH did well with Brett Connolly, and they'll probably get a mirror image of a situation with Chiasson.

The skill level is there, but coaches hate players like him... which is why he wasn't qualified twice as a RFA.

But... AV did well when Benoit with Pouliot's last kick at the can and that netted a lifetime deal for Benny (who was back to his old ways in EDM).

A one year flyer on these guys are not a bad option. But I guess DD is that guy for the Rangers this year.

im with you completely

losing stepan isnt going to drop us to 6th in the met, i mean do these people really think that the islanders, flyers, hurricanes and the devils will finish above us? that is absurd

ill put $50 dollars on it that the rangers finish with more then 90 points and better then 22nd in the league this year

You do realize that it's just what his model is saying and no statistics are perfect, right? He's not an idiot for analyzing a team in a different way just because you don't like his opinion/what the stats say.

We very may well not be a good team this year. If Hank doesn't rebound and Mika/Hayes can't handle the increased responsibility, then it's gonna be a long year. That's not even factoring in potential injuries. You need to consider the different scenarios. If we're gonna be a lottery team, this is the year to do it.

If we pencil in Grabs, DD and ??? Until November, that's a fairly stable 4th line.

His model is dependent on the data he feeds it for which the human is accountable.
