It sure looks better than Powe, Newbury, Asham, Megna, Glass etc.

You make it sound like the KHL is a different sport. Remember, there are quite a few teams who play on NHL-sized rinks in the KHL. It's not as if it's the SHL where every rink is the size of a football field

I get that channel on Fios that plays KHL games all the time, so I watch a game or two each week, in addition to any interesting games I've streamed here and there. Point is, I've seen my fair share of KHL hockey. Anyway, to me it always seems like I'm watching a very clearly minor league that is a substantial step below the NHL. It feels like the AHL with each team having one or two higher end guys drop in.

I agree with Machinehead, people put too much stock in the KHL. It makes Beargloves a better prospect and probably closer than a guy coming from major junior or NCAA would be, but it doesn't mean he's NHL ready. This isn't a Radulov we're talking about here either.

For perspective, would people be penciling him in the way they have all summer if the team he was a part of helping win back to back championships was in the AHL and not the KHL?

I hope Bereglazov makes it and is a legit top 6 guy because that's a free 23 year old player, but I'm not penciling him in.

Matt Duchene will not answer questions. "Only here out of respect for teammates"

There's a video (which I don't know how to embed) that shows him clearly say I am here for my teammates and for the fans. I am in good physical condition. I will see you all over the next couple of days.

Clear shot at management

Hm, Dan Rosen clarifies that Miller comment and says that Miller will start at center in training camp to get him used to it in case he's needed there when the season starts, not that he's 100% starting the season at center

Talk is cheap. They should put their money where their mouth is

At least it shows they might be willing to have him ass the #7 or #8 dman if he really gets outplayed.

Don't see any way they send him to Hartford, though.

AV always starts the year off being sane and then falls back into his comfortable patterns.

Look what happened to Buchnevich.

The fact that he's willing to implicitly acknowledge that Staal has some issues is a positive step though.

Not for nothing but AV put his faith in Marc Staal in the playoffs and staal failed him multiple times. When push comes to shove you have to take care of your own back. AV gave him the rope and he hung himself and AV along with him.

If it were me I'd never trust him again. This very well could be why AV is saying what he's saying. I think he's being very real here. Staal won't lose a job because he literally contractually can't. But he's going to have to fight for ice time. That I do believe.

Luckily for him Bereglazov had a "hold my beer" tournament in traverse so Staal can thank him for that.

If I had a nickel for every time AV said something that he completely did a 180 on for no apparent reason...i'd be a very rich man.

Regarding favorites I have no idea if AV likes Staal any more or any less than the other guys on the team. I would never assume a guy that plays the most is a personal favorite or the guy that plays the least is not a favorite.

Imagine if after the summer we just had the top 6 D ends up being:

McD-Shatty
Skjei-Smith
Holden-DeAngelo

And Staal is the odd man out? That would be something.

Yeah, this is what I'm thinking. AV stuck with his guys and they let him down and maybe he's actually feeling the heat under his seat.

Plus, people talk about favorites and stuff, I don't think it's a stretch to say Stepan was AV's favorite forward and he's gone.

Let's be honest that mistake is the only reason we weren't in the eastern conference final. Relying on staal Holden cost us multiple times. AV coached us out of the playoffs. I'm hoping he learned his lesson because we NEVER should have lost to Ottawa

Yeah, sure. It has absolutely nothing to do with Pageau scoring 4 goals in a single game. Or Karlsson scoring from behind the goal-line from an impossible angle.

It's only because of Holden and Staal in the final minute

I'd be happy if AV actually had a structured camp instead of waiting until game one to decide on what lines he's going to play.

Aside from a few players still competing at the end of camp, he should have his lines together in an appropriate time and start warming them up for a few games.

There really isn't all that many decisions to be made.
You have the 3rd D pairing and the 4th line.

Get your team together, few tweaks at the end of camp and let's play some hockey.

Amen..

Most teams and coaches like to have pairs of guys they use together. For example AV may use Nash-Hayes and Kreider-Zib and rotate others with them throughout camp. This also allows for some younger guys who may be on the bubble to get a real opportunity to showcase themselves with NHLers

Unless hell freezes over, Staal will not be fighting for a spot out of the gate

Third pairing minutes I think is a given at this point, but with AV you never know

I think down the line he might be fighting for a spot, but even of that I am skeptical. While it's the right move to make, having 6 million dollars sit in the press box probably isn't something they want

To be fair, Dolan and Sather have never really concerned themselves with burying money. Staal's cap hit drops by over a million if he goes to the AHL.

Couple of notes:
If Staal goes to the AHL this year, they save $1.05m on the cap.
Next year this number will go up.
They may be waiting for the next lockout as they may foresee a compliance buyout coming in which case 2 years of some dead cap may be better than 6-8

I'm just hoping the increased emphasis on speed is followed by an even bigger emphasis on structure. Lindy Ruff likes to have dman join the rush and attack, but he also had them play a smart western conference style breakout system. I'd rather move the puck up ice with short, crisp passes than a long stretch pass 9 times out of 10. Attacking with numbers causes breakdowns on the opponent's defensive structure

Agreed but last year I don't recall any permanent line combos playing the last few games.

There shouldn't be much of a mystery with the top 3 lines.

I think you have to at least give your lines a few games to get their chemistry going IMO.
