Kane going to slot in nicely.
He's gonna suck no matter what team he ends up on. His hips are cooked, surgery isn't a magic bullet

he'll be a slow perimeter playing collecting some points on the PP until he retires in a couple of years because he's just done

e: doesn't matter what he was or what kind of competitor he is or believes himself to be, when your body goes it goes

I already hate the Wheeler signing.

Unless you think he's blocking Laf from a top 6 RW spot I don't get it. 800K for a 6'5 225 lb. guy who put up 55 points last year is a bargain even if he's 37. As long as he's motivated and I can't see why he wouldn't be. His contract is both buriable and tradeable if necessary and if Laf does make the move to a top 6RW we can still drop Wheeler down to the 3rd line to play with either Chytil or Trocheck depending. I don't think he will really be blocking anyone from taking the next step. He's not a banged up player either like Patrick Kane.

I can promise Laffy is getting a legitimate look at top 6 RW to start camp and the season.

But he hasn’t sucked. He hasn’t collected all of his points on the PP alone. He had 92 points just 2 years ago. He has 57 points in 73 games last year with the bad hip. He is still producing at ES. Yes he looked slower last year with the bad hip, but he was still quicker than a lot of NHL players. He showed that extra gear when he stole the puck from the 2 Devils players and went up the ice to score, racing past them before roofing the puck. Again, on a bad hip. And so yes it does matter the type of competitor he is and has been throughout his career, because that body of work has me banking on him rehabbing his ass off to be an effective player next season. Do i expect over a PPG pace, no not at all. But I think a 0.65-0.75 PPG pace would not be out of the question and I much prefer to sign the scoring depth than to trade assets for one at the deadline.

Yeah, I think so too (I know you talked to Peca).

Wheeler is here, initially, as a 3rd line guy.

It's going to be:

Kreider - Zibs - Kakko
Panarin - Trocheck/Chytil - Lafreniere
Goodrow - Trocheck/Chytil - Wheeler
Vesey - Bonino - Pitlick

With the outliers being Othmann, Cuylee, etc...

Goodrow makes every line he touches worse. If he has to play at all (and unfortunately he's still not the worst F on the team either), it should be on the 4th line where we can minimize that
The key to seeing either of Cuylle or Othmann this season in any substantive role is getting rid of Goodrow’s horrible contract.

This quote from Drury has my attention,

"I encourage him to just to have a fresh look and come with a new perspective that any new coach would bring," he said. "Not only him, but bringing Phil (Housley) and Michael (Peca) and Dan (Muse) and others in to look at different things, look at different ideas and potentially try different things in training camp. You all know (Laviolette). He's been around a long time, and he doesn't strike me as the kind of coach who’s just going to stay with something just because it was used last year."

Every fiber of my soul believes Lavy will be like every other recycled coach floating around regarding the usual tropes we're all used to, but that quote gives me hope. At the very least, it seems Drury is "encouraging" him to try some things I think we all wanna see as a fanbase. I've said it before, but the staff behind the HC also inspires some hope.

What is going on this week with the media? Did any NYC publication cover our games against the Flyers? It’s not like there’s anything else going on.

I’d try Othmann, Cuylle or Wheeler with Panarin. Doesn’t Panarin play better when he has someone to open space for him or someone that plays with some physical style of game? Hasn’t Wheeler played center before?

I wonder if the Rangers will try to use Wheeler at center. Size down the middle can be helpful

Kreider Mika Kakko
Lafy Chytil Othmann
Panarin Wheeler/Trocheck Cuylle/Wheeler
Vesey Goodrow Bonino

This would be a deep forward lineup

Hopefully so. If Wheeler were to spend as much time or more time on the 3rd line as he does in the top 6 we should have a really good regular season. It would be a big deal for both Kakko and Lafreniere to both break out this year. Wheeler on the 3rd with either Trocheck or Chytil should make our 3rd a pretty dangerous line too.

Wheeler's more a playmaker than he is a goal scorer but he's also a very big body and still skates pretty well. That's a lot to deal with and both Chytil and Trocheck are more shooting centers than playmaking centers so I'd think he'd be a good fit with either.

Lavy will throw the same shit at the wall as every other semi-capable coach, and the media and fans will make up narratives about him depending on how the players perform in the playoffs. Rinse and repeat.

I've never been more ready to completely ignore the coach and put everything at the players' feet.

I assume you mean at LW? If they're actually going to give Laf a long look at RW, there's a very real chance that he ends up on the top line when everything shakes out.

Yes. If Laf takes a crack at a Top 6 RW slot, all for that.

Anyone who thought Mike Babcock deserved a break and was a good idea to be our next coach.....well......
I still doubt anything will come of it.

Somewhat interesting, there was a Finnish article where a reporter (a former Liiga professional actually) went to the ice with Turku based NHL players a few weeks ago. Rantanen, Kakko, Lehkonen etc. Korpikoski was actually the one doing the coaching. Anyway, the reporter and Rantanen said that Kakko was the most vocal jester of the group, always playing around and shooting shit. Kinda interesting, considering he has always seemed a bit shy over at New York and elsewhere TBH.

Do we have confirmation on when the camp actually opens for the Rangers? On Thursday?
