There really is no roster room at all as of now. Even someone like a Cullye who has a leg up on Othmann or Edstrom is going to have a really tough time making the lineup due to cap space for the deadline and playing time.

Those guys are going to have to really come out swinging for training camp or play a buzzsaw/rugged game that Laviolette, Muse, or Peca really appreciate. If anything as another poster said a few days ago, the hope is that the young guys most likely spot duty this year and take over either by the deadline or are ready for fall 2024.

Cullye and Othmann are competing for spots against the likes of Pitlick and Belzile.

If they can't supplant either guy, then they deserve to be in the AHL

Cullye has a chance to make the team, Othmann would have to blow the doors off at camp and even then i doubt he'd make it, atleast he shouldn't, he should start in Hartford until atleast Christmas, bring him up at the end of the year would be my prefered treatment.

I sign Lindgren to 4 per over 7 years without hesitation.

Love the guy but I’m worried he would get banged up and be a Girardi buyout

Agreed Cuylee has a better shot and then just send a Belize / Nash/ Brodz down

It’s ok having Pitlick or Vesey sit at times

Having young players like Cuylle, Othmann, Edstrom and others start the year in Hartford isn't a problem. There will be injuries or veterans will underperform and they can be called up based on who is playing well. In the meantime, they should be playing big minutes with good players in the AHL to build confidence and work on their games.

Pitlick is going to start the year with the big club. Belzile probably not.

It's one of Cullye/Othmann/Edstrom trying to overachieve and get a spot.

Cullye has to have a good camp but also the coaches are going to have to live with any warts and help develop him. That's why I think it'll be difficult for him to earn a spot right out of camp unless he plays a sound defensive game, scores a few goals, and uses his body.

Edstrom is going to start in Hartford unless he takes that one period he had in preseason a few years ago and does that all preseason.

Bold prediction: One of Cuylle or Othmann ends up as Panarin's RW.
They both have the right mentality and more edge than we've really had on panarin's line outside of Trocheck, and never on the right side.
I think Othmann fits the bill better, but Cuylle is probably a little more pro ready after the full year + in HFD.

Has Cuylle played much RW? I thought he was a pure LWer.

I think if we're talking next year, it's Othmann on that opposite wing.

Panarin-Chytil-Othmann
Kreider-Trochek-Kaako
Lafreniere-Zibanejad-________
Cuylle-________-Vesey

Perhaps Lafreniere moves to the right side and Cuylle moves up opening a spot for someone like Edstrom or Berard takes that RW open spot opposite Lafreniere.

I remembered him on the right on the 4th last year when he came up.

I'm hoping going into the season the 4th line is used a little less. So with that said, I don't see the point in having Othmann play on the 4th line if he beats out those players. Give him more playing time in the AHL, maybe a call up if a top 9 option is injured.

"Andy is unbelievable," Nashville Head Coach Peter Laviolette said. "He's got a disposition that allows him to handle everybody's woes every day, from the staff, the coaches, the players; he's calm, he's cool, he's collected, he's smart and he's a great person. He's great at what he does and we're lucky to have him here."

I don’t see Lindgren’s health being a real issue for another 4-5 years. And even then you can LTIR him. Cap will be increasing too.

I don't even like the idea of Cuylle playing on the 4th line. At least to start the season

Clowe and Mara are nice additions.

I think it can be done. Both Brian Boyle and Artem Anisimov started out as 4th line regulars.

We're going to have injuries and if Cuylle shows even a lick of offense he will be a primary candidate for top 9 duty if and when we lose one of our current 8 top 9 forwards long term.

Othmann is the guy who is top 9 or bust for me, and I'll be very surprised if he sticks in the NHL.

Also interested to see if Laviolette does anything with 11/7, though with Gustafsson and Jones being somewhat redundant I don't know how much sense that makes.

It's crazy this kid never got a single NHL game. Lots of competition on those Leaf teams at the time. You'd think he could try breaking in on a bottom feeder.. off to Europe it was though.

We don't have many roster spots but thought it would've been cool to bring him on a 2nd chance this year. Throw in some incentive.. if you make the team, great. If not, you could be like several of the other depth guys Drury brought in that'll be making close to, or more than half a million to play in the minors this year.

I don't disagree that he could play on the 4th line.

If we look at Anisimov in his first full season in NY, he averaged ~12:54 per game. To me, that screams 3rd liner.

Boyle was an interesting case stuff though. His first season he was horrendous but the team didn't want to waive him. He was for sure a 4th liner.

Lets expand this a bit:

Ryan Callahan in year 1 averaged ~10:31 which was only 14 games, but then in his first true year he averaged 12:22

Carl Hagelin averaged 15:03

I guess for my money, if I was trying to develop Cuylle into a hard-nosed top-9 forward, I would give him at least another half of a season in the AHL to develop his game, unless a top-9 spot opened up sooner. If at that point the only spot open is on the 4th line, I'm good with him taking that role at that time to finish up the season. But I'm not sure I push him up just to play on the 4th line right away. If that makes sense.
