Please, PLEASE do not play Kaako with Panarin. Oil and water.

Lafreniere-Zibanejad-Wheeler
Panarin-Chytil-Vesey
Kreider-Trochek-Kaako
Goodrow-Bonino-Pitlick

I think this is the season starting forward group. MAYBE someone like Cuylle pushes Goodrow to the right side and outplays Pitlick but he was a decently useful player in St Louis last year.

In before someone whines about Kreider being on the 3rd line when in reality, that line would be our 1st line by default due to them just eating other teams alive.

It would probably be something like:

15 minutes ES Time
15 minutes ES time
15 minutes ES time
7 minutes ES time

PP/PK the remainder of ~8 minutes per game

Obviously some fluctuation there and I would heavily use Bonino and Goodrow on the PK. In games where the team is up, I would back off on minutes for some or push minutes up if a line is feeling it but overall pretty even playing time for the top-3 lines

I rather have Othmann and Cuylle make it.
You hope the kids can make the jump. Doesn't always pan out that way. I wouldn't want Othmann playing 8 minutes a night on that 4th line anyway as a 20 year old. He should be logging 17-20 minutes a night.

I think you're also underrating what Motte brings to our 4th line. You might have forgotten how much ass our 4th line sucked last season until we re-acquired him.

I think the kids get the puck for Panarin, having a passer in Panarin with Kakko might force him to shoot more. Imo though the only center we have that works well with Panarin currently is Zib, but we need to commit to someone else playing with him for balance and if Chytil can watch some tape of how Strome and Panarin did give and go's to work their way around guys it might work. Not pining for Strome, just want someone to play that style that works best with Panarin. All three kids need to be comfortable playing and allowed the same rope as the vets to make mistakes.

True but not worth overpaying a 4th liner. He is not that good.

Simmonds I can see with his connection to Laviolette as well as Watson. Two best options

Simmonds in a Ranger jersey is some dark ages stuff. Always respected him as a player in his prime, we had no answer for him net front back in the Lundqvist era

That might have had more to do with Carpenter, Leschyshyn, Blais and Gauthier than it does with Motte. Bonino and Pitlick are solid additions.

So the way I see it they only have 700 k with22 left on the cap

May aswell sign a depth F at 900 k? Can’t call up a 23rd anyway with min around 775 k

Numbering the forward lines is one of the more antiquated hockey tropes fans love to latch on to. The Rangers have more than enough talent that this coaching staff should be able to find a top 9 that are all above average 5v5, and a 4th line that can break even.

Phil Kessel is still a very good player. The only reason he even has to look for work is because he looks like he's 50 and out of shape. It's just appearance shaming at this point. It's not fair.

I'm not saying for the Rangers to run out and do it because every situation is different but I find it surprising and annoying that he's still unemployed with 32 teams out there.

I mean is 36 and had 36 points in 82 games last year, 9 of which came on the PP. His defensive player has always been bad and you know he isn't forechecking.

I'm surprised a bad team wouldn't just sign him for shits and giggles, like Chicago, but he isn't exactly a must sign.

27 even strength points is a lot considering he barely played. He put up just under 0.5 PPG, 75% of those points at even strength, and he played 12:49 a game.

People make that argument about Lafreniere and that's two minutes and change less than Lafreniere averaged. Kessel is still an offensive dynamo when he's on the ice.

Defense is a concern but if he's getting minutes on your third line, he's better than 90% of the third liners in the NHL.

You mean the same body stuff people talk about Laf for?

Phil Kessel’s regular season game streak is the issue.

A playoff team doesn’t want the headache of managing a streak when picking their everyday roster. Unless Phil has signaled he is fine with being a scratch, no coach (other than the Flyers with Yandle) wants that distraction.
