All of this sure blows up a lot of narratives around here.

That being said, getting the last 15 seconds of a PP shift when everyone is changing off a zone clear isn't really the best way to analyze anything even though, despite it, Trouba somehow managed 5 points (likely all a direct result of him shooting the puck).

Hopefully this coach actually believes in giving the 2nd PP some time out there. I think he will.
You can compare it to guys getting similar time and he's at the bottom of the list.

I've also seen stats that show the Rangers are bang average in terms of how they distribute time. Nobody plays their second unit. It's another narrative this board made up to feel better about Lafreniere.

Back in the day, we used to wine and complain about guys like Dan Girardi and John Mitchell being out there for the 15, 20 seconds.

Laviolette just came from a team where PP1, in their primes, were the best powerplay since the 70's.

He's coming to a team that has the best PPQB among defensemen in the league and the best net-front guy in the league.

I don't see him being a guy that likes to lean on his second unit.

f*** him then

lol
You can have my ticket

I hope the coach believes in whatever provides the most goals and wins.

I don't know dude, I mean I watch every Rangers game this year and it always seemed like that first unit was out there forever and Panarin, in particular (who is presumably who Laf would change for).

Where can I find PP ATOI? I'd like to see his minutes vs. Lafreniere's.

Yeah, I'm not talking "lean on", I'm talking a 75ish second shift for the 1st unit and 45ish second shift for the 2nd and not shuffling gassed guys out there because you think they should be out there.

God bless Chris Kreider, but that also seems bad.

Chris Kreider is what I hoped Ryan Callahan would have produced in his prime, you know how much I loved that player. Kreider is producing what I hoped and love it. Kreider is the new Callahan for me. When I read folks wanting him on a 3rd line over Laf , it makes me frown, but I’ve learned my lesson not to be so invested into a player, but I really want Chris Kreider to retire a Ranger, it really means a lot to me. I also wish I knew the reason why he didn’t get the “C”. There has to be a reason and we may never know.

He's not a spotlight guy. I don't think he wanted it.

“Rick Nash, I don’t even think he had a letter for about four years and he was as much of a leader as we had on those teams. I’ve been pretty adamant that naming Jacob [Trouba] as captain was the right move, and it would have been before last season with all of the things he does both here and away from the ice. I think it’s great for him and for us.

“But I’m confident in the role I have as a leader. I know what I bring.”

Yeah, I honestly think and it‘s speculation, he turned it down.

Just speculating, but I don't think he wants it. He's a laid back dude. I think he's comfortable in an A role where he can set an example and be a good teammate but he doesn't have to get in anyone's face.

It doesn't necessarily make him a bad choice, but I think it was his if he wanted it.

Yeah, I said that above, don’t think he wanted it. As per Trouba, well I have my reservations but don‘t hate the guy.

Kreider is not soft just inconsistent with his physical game. Scared to take penalties cause he is so strong. Remember when he was a bull.

One of the few willing to stick up for teammates

No, do not ever remember CK ever being a Bull.

I do see him peeling off taking the body more often than I prefer, but it seems that most here are ok with that approach to the game.

Since it’s the dog days of August. Thoughts on this hypothetical NYR/Toronto trade?

I don’t mind seeing PP1 getting the lions share of minutes, unless they’re sucking ass which happens.

I’m sure you can remember the countless shifts where all they try and do is feed Zibanejad for the predictable 1 timer for 1:40 then the 2nd unit jumps on the ice and they get 1 rush before the PP expires.

That’s what kills me, and that’s where I would have liked to see Gallant lean on the 2nd PP a bit, just to switch shit up.

I think having another PP QB in Gustafsson really opens up some opportunities for that 2nd unit that we didn’t really have last year.

For the last 4 seasons, our PP has been top-5 in the league. Some personnel changes with Strome/Trocheck, but the main guys are there and they are good.

As long as it works, there's no point in changing it just for the sake of kids/play PP2. even if I would really like it.

What I would like, is temporary changes if the PP is cold and also looks like dog shit. Gallant never did that, insisted that it would right itself out. Which it eventually did, after multiple, multiple frustrating nights. Why not try something else?

I really do think that our PP would be better overall, and the kids would likely improve, if we took Trocheck off of PP1 and put Kakko or Laf there. Trocheck's always produced at his best as a net-front guy, but short of Kreider getting traded, that spot is locked up long-term. Putting Trocheck on PP2 allows him to slot back into that area.

It also means that one of Laf/Kakko will be on PP1, but moreover, neither of them will be stuck in the net-front role. Sure, they *can* do it, but both of them are better passers than tippers, and their skillsets are better used elsewhere on the PP.

Kreider
Zib-Panarin-Laf/Kakko
Fox

Trocheck
Wheeler or Laf/Kakko-Chytil-Wheeler or Laf/Kakko (idk where Wheeler typically plays on the PP)
Gustafsson/Jones

Just took a quick look. One of Trouba's PP points came when he was on the ice with Panarin and Kane. Another was an empty net PP goal. One of his PP assists was (amusingly) on a Lafreniere PP goal. It's also not entirely fair to take Laf's career total PP minutes and complain that he only had 6 points (particularly unfair to then compare that to Trouba's numbers for just this season), without pointing out that four of those six points came this season. Trouba had exactly one additional PP point this year (and none of Laf's were empty netters).

The duo's should be:

Panarin-Chytil-______
Lafreniere-Zibenajd-_______
Kreider-Trochek-Kaako (yes I realize this is a trio)

Wheeler, Vesey, Goodrow, Othmann are in battle for the other 2 spots

Id hope Kakko joins either Zib or Panarin, preferably Zib, put wheeler with panarin and Vesey with Kreider.

Alexis Lafrenière

The No.1 pick from 2020 certainly isn’t going to be the highest-paid player from his draft class. That distinction belongs to Tim Stützle, who is about to start an eight-year deal that comes with an $8.35 million AAV.

Lafrenière has not been able to gain the same offensive traction as Stützle, even though he’s only missed a grand total of four games over the course of his three full seasons in the NHL. The Rangers have given him ample opportunity, but Lafrenière has yet to prove that he’s a productive top-six forward.

Whereas other recent No. 1 picks like Hughes, Nico Hischier and Auston Matthews have hit home runs on their second contracts coming out of entry-level, Lafrienère appears poised to sign a modest bridge deal. As Arthur Staple wrote in a recent mailbag column, there doesn’t seem to be a ton of urgency to get anything done with Lafrenière, who is most likely looking at a one or two-year contract with New York.

The Rangers have just over $2 million in cap space with Lafrenière the only notable player without a contract for 2023-24. Considering the team’s cap situation, and the player’s slower-than-expected start to his NHL career, his next deal could come close to what Evolving-Hockey projects — a two-year deal worth $2.69 million. A long-term contract could come cheap, too, but obviously limits what the player could make down the line and may be too big of a risk for the Rangers to commit to since he hasn’t thrived yet. But to even reach the AAV associated with that two-year projection, which should be cost-effective over the next two seasons, New York would probably have to find just a bit more cap space.

CapFriendly says $2.2M in cap space with Laf unsigned, but the Rangers have about $3M when you take off the 8th defenseman. They’re not going to carry eight defensemen.
