Agreed. MSG does not do controversy. They vanished Al Trautwig with the snap of a finger.

You can compare it to guys getting similar time and he's at the bottom of the list.

I've also seen stats that show the Rangers are bang average in terms of how they distribute time. Nobody plays their second unit. It's another narrative this board made up to feel better about Lafreniere.

I’d be curious to see these stats. Where did you find them?

I also wonder if, in terms of raw minutes, there are some guys that are on par with Laf but say played two seasons with zero PP time and the one on a first unit. The raw minutes would be the same, but the scoring opportunities certainly wouldn’t in my opinion.

There’s a lot of nuance here. I’m as critical of Laf as anyone but I certainly think there’s an argument that he’d be in a much better place if he was getting significantly more offensive minutes during his rookie year when they were going to Colin Blackwell instead.

I go on EvolvingHockey, set strength to powerplay, set the years to 20-21, 21-22, and/or 22-23. Lafreniere has played 267.50 minutes on the powerplay in his career so I set the minimum ice time to 267. This report generates 278 results.

In raw points, Lafreniere ranks 278th.

In points per 60, he ranks 278th and he's pretty substantially behind the player who's 277th.

There's always nuance but like, how much is there? The nuance in this situation feels like a band-aid on a gunshot wound.

It is one of the worst and most shocking stats I've ever read. He's the least productive powerplay player in the league.

There's nothing to explain it away and there's nobody else to blame. If he was just bad on the powerplay instead of literally one of the worst in a generation, he'd have decent offensive totals.

We can talk about usage but his teammates are getting the exact same usage. The next Ranger on the list who was with the Rangers all three years is Chris Kreider and he ranks 38th.

If you want to include anybody who played on the team, it's Ryan Strome at 136th. If you want to include a guy that only really played on PP2, it's Pavel Buchnevich who managed to get to 76th despite playing on our second unit.

In 20-21, on our second unit, Buchnevich had 8 points. Running joke Colin Blackwell had 5. Lafreniere had zero in more minutes than Blackwell.

On his own team, Lafreniere sits in his own dimension. Nobody else on our second unit (Kakko, Trouba, Chytil) played enough minutes to quality for the list, which goes to show that Lafreniere is playing on the powerplay more than you think he is. He just historically sucks at it.

Bread has to do this celly after his first goal now

I mean, this unfortunately matches my eye test. I want to rationalize this shit away so badly but I’ve been worried about this pretty much since day one.

I’m for signing Ani at league minimum, 35+. Start him in Hartford. Worst case scenario terminate his contract and keep him as a scout.

The sad part he could not make a Flyers team last year. I think he is going back to KHL. Doubt any team signs him although id take him back as depth

I don’t feel like we really need to keep belaboring the point that Laf has disappointed including on the PP

But IMO it should still be a goal to try to get him to develop and get opportunities to improve and that still involves PP time. I think we should take the approach of “I hope he improves and can be an asset” rather than “he sucks all the time all over let’s waive him”

It's basically the same discussion as with Panarin. Getting rid of them doesn't improve your team or bring value, so all you can hope for is that they improve.

Things I don’t want to do:

Bring back Motte, or ever talk about him again.

Bring back Kane, or have to listen to speculation about him for months.

Trade Panarin or Laf so we can afford volume in lesser players

Trade Shesterkin

Discuss every leftover player out there. We have the depth guys they signed.

We are at least 18 months away from any “trade Shesterkin” talk. He’s on a great value contract right now. It doesn’t get interesting until he’s looking for a raise in two years.

Kane is coming back. Mentally prepare yourself.

Duguay was a pretty to very good hockey player when he wasn't focused on being Mr. New York Nightlife, but he's never been the smartest guy to put it lightly.

He's very "outspoken" on Twitter for the last 6-7 years. He's a celebrity and a public figure so not that best look.
