Now, I will also say that there are some players that have an unquantifiable effect with their hitting, especially in the playoffs. Those are the players whose hits are hard and frequent enough to start to wear down guys and impact how they play. I think Wilson is a player that can do that. Martin was another in his first stint with the Isles, before he lost a step. Ovechkin was another who could play like that when he wanted to.
Especially in the playoffs, teams come out playing a very heavy game. Those that can, at least. The Blues have had games that they had virtually no interest in touching the puck and complete interest in "hitting anything that moves". And that had an effect.

The playoffs are a war of attrition. Wearing your opponent down with physical play is part of that

With no posts since Sunday I figured a good time for a quick question . Will Rangers go after a designated goon/heavyweight or ride things out with our current crew and hope we are team tough enough ? Will those games against Cap's Wilson and the Isles Ross the Boss ..especially if we play them 6 times in a regional bubble like season ...be a factor in their decision ?
I was thinking about Corey Perry. He's not a true heavyweight but he is a shit disturber of the first order who still has some skill. He was effective in the playoffs. His market is next to nothing. I wouldn't mind bringing him in as a designated shotgun

Disagree, Reaves is one of the most intimidating enforcers in the league.
Agreed, and he could definitely deter me from running Lafreniere. Ross Johnston though? Fighting is the one thing separating him from a much less lucrative job so I don't think you're going to deter him that way.

Even if his market is poor, I see Perry choosing a current cup contender if he's going to settle for a 4th line role.

If I was Perry I'd either want a shot at PP minutes on a horrible team, or the role you're offering with a chance to win a cup. He's only 35, we've seen odder Renaissances.

So do you feel similar about Brian Boyle? Or Carl Soderberg?
I think those players bring very different things from each other, from Reaves or from Perry.

Honestly, I dont think Boyle will ever be a great 3C, so in him youre getting a veteran but expensive, aging, slower 4C. I never bought into the mythos around Boyle. He didnt play to his size, was not nearly as chippy as he could have been/we needed, and that was half a decade ago. He felt the 4C role was beneath him then, and I would be surprised if his mindset has changed much over the intervening seasons.

Soderberg could easily shore up 3C, maybe pinch in at 2C without much problem, would provide good offense and potentially carry a third line. That is good return on that investment, IMO. However, we re-signed Strome. Between Strome and Chytil, our middle six C are set. Maybe we shift Strome to RW, but he won't play above Kreider or Buchnevich. Does he push Kakko down? Dont see that happening unless there's an injury.

Reaves is a solid player but shouldn't be getting minutes above the 4th line on this team. Otherwise, he's playing over a Laf, Kreider, or Kakko and no, just no. Would be a solid addition to the 4th line, but at his cap hit he is a luxury we shouldn't prioritize. Would not be on the ice enough to be so effective a deterrent.

The same goes for Perry but more so. Is he signing on, knowing that he probably won't see time above the third line? Does he have enough gas left at 35? Will he stay healthy? Another luxury we can't well afford.

Edit: maybe Soderberg or Chytil could play 3LW with Kreider at 2RW and Lemieux at 4LW.

Perry won't leave anything on the ice that is for sure and still can do a lot of good things ....if the price is right he might be an interesting guy to have around . I've been a big fan since his days in London playing for the Hunters....and he plays soooo much like them....playoff style hockey . He certainly is not a heavyweight...but he will get his money's worth coming out of a crease scrum . He might just be the kind of guy that rubs off on a Kreider/Gauthier/Kakko a wee bit and is definitely somebody that could mentor a young Lafreniere who plays a similiar game . If the price is right I like it and I think he would too .

I'm going to assume that Panarin thought the photoshoot was like a Zoom call so no-one would see the tracksuit pants and runners

I forgot he was out there, but, good call. Exactly the type of player I was thinking. Not some lumbering pylon.

I just don't want to see Laff get rocked like Svechnikov did, and possibly come away with a worse outcome. Worse, you want to lessen the possibility of a (trade bait) TDA or 7 locked in years Kreider getting hurt vs a Tom Wilson, Brendon Dillon, Brady Tkachuk, etc...

The kid needs the confidence to play his game to the max every shift. Chippy and all.

Perry could still keep up with a less responsible 3rd line and carry his weight.

Obviously, you can't plan these things, but you can plan FOR them preventively and play the percentages. Kreider and Lemieux theoretically shouldn't be on the ice when Lafreniere is.

Perry is not someone I’d want for anything other than a spare F. He turned it up a notch in the playoffs, but he was pretty terrible for Dallas during the Regular Season.

I think the Rangers could definitely be in the market for a spare-part/placeholder kind of RW until they feel Kravtsov is ready to enter the bubble and possibly stay there.

He benefitted from not having to play the whole year, i wouldn't expect the same from him in a full season.
