I was so skeptical of Lafreniere during the lead up to the draft, partially because of how ‘disappointing’ Hughes and Kakko’s seasons were, but I’ve been watching larger highlight reels and game footage and looking at his game more in depth and I’m willing to say I’m leaning 70/30 toward him being a MacKinnon-esque talent. He’s got it all and he has the Crosby work ethic to keep improving.

Hard to argue with the Amonte trade but you have to wonder if they could have won in 94 without Esa Tikkanen and kept Doug Weight.
The gartner for Anderson trade really had me starching my head at the time. That trade seemed like a Mike Keenan spiteful heavy handed move and in no way improved the team.

Players you trade for usually have expensive contracts, id have loved if they had a center they could expect to take that 2c spot at an entry level contract even if its for 2 years on the cheap as the 2c. Maybe they feel Barron can do that? Im not sure about that but id like to have that option to have someone cheap in that spot.
Barron is not gonna be the 2C of this team’s future.

I'm curious where they would be going with these combos. I could see why they would start Lafreniere with Zibanejad, but I also do not want him to defer. We have seen it with some #1 picks coming in with other stars.

There are too many possible line combos if Kreider moves over. Guys like Kakko and Kravtsov can also play LW, so they are not locked into that really young RW look if Kreider moved over.

With Covid related issues here to at least late spring there is no need to rush into anything drastic. Hopefully by next fall the season can resume as normal. Till then everything is a big ?.

Rumour of a CDN division w the border likeky still closed in January

It’s going to be s different set up but they will play a shortened year

My gut tells me that Granlund really want to be here and is holding out until we see what happens with Strome. If Strome comes in at more than let’s say 4.5 then we walk away and pivot to Granlund, sign him for 4.2 or less. Risky for Granlund. Who would the board rather have?

A lot of the next move depends on the Strome arbitration. I agree there. I think the Rangers, in this environment, should come in at $3.85. It is a $750k raise and a low ball offer but they have the evidence of Strome’s numbers away from Panarin. The gap is significant. Hopefully the arbitrator awards him between $4-$4.25. I wouldnt walk away from that. That could very well be traded or you keep him and still have enough to sign a vet on the cheap after signing Lemieux. And that would obviously require sending some guys down to the AHL at the start of the season. But that might leftover money might not allow you to sign someone like Granlund, but rather Boyle/Brassard. Maybe Haula. Think Granlund is gona want $2.75-$3.5 range.

Well we know Strome does well w Panarin so just keep Strome for a year

Strome's hearing isn't until Nov 5th. If we walk away, Strome becomes a UFA and can sign with anyone, but after 4 days, he has the option to re-sign with us for the number we offered in arbitration. So if we offer 3.8 and the arbitrator awards 4.8 and we walk away, Strome can still accept the 3.8 mil offer 4 days later. I assume there is some sort of time limit on that offer, but he would first be eligible to sign it on Nov 9th. That's a long time for Granlund to wait if he has other offers on the table.

Very good point. And I dont know what Granlund is looking for. I would think he wants to be at least at $2.5+. Wennberg just got $2.25. Granlund has more of a pedigree. I dont think we can afford Granlund unless teams are all capped out and he has to take even less than he already wanted.

I don't understand the calls for moving people all over the place to other positions. Kreider to RW, Krvtsov to LW, etc. Just leave guys at their natural positions and we have enough for three strong lines. Whether you play a kids line at 3 or spread out the vets, as I'd like to see them try. Why complicate anything?

Keenan did hate Gartner. He hated pretty much every player we moved that year and a number that we didn't. Keenan was always keen on bringing in former Blackhawks guys. Messier IMO was always pushing for Oilers guys. I think there might have been a little of him involved in the Gartner move too.

Yea can’t compare him to Hughes/Kakko who are gona be great players in their own right. LaF is a different animal

Barring any trades roster looks like this to start and then players will get moved around accordingly am I correct??
Kreider Zibanejad Buchnevich
Panarin Strome Kakko
Lafreniere Chytil Gauthier
Lemieux Howden Barron
Rooney/PDG
Rooney or PDG 4th line RW if Barron doesn’t make team outta camp

ADA/ Smith- Trouba
Lindgren-Fox
Johnson- ADA/Smith
Renunnen

shesty
Georgie

anybody have anything different to start the season out or am I missing something??? I don’t care about Larry’s article

We won't be walking away from Strome, not sure why people are suggesting that. They will take the arbitration, elevate his point totals if they can and trade him at the deadline. Even if you have to retain half, getting something for him instead of nothing is a no brainer.
