I'm not a contract expert but the "problem" is that we have three players with almost $3 mill in potential bonuses and half our roster is ELCs so we actually have the issue of the bonus cushion not being able to hold off all of our potential bonuses. @Thirty One did a thread on it.
Also, the Rangers, as such a young team, is a bit of a fringe-y case. This is probably not what the founding fathers were planning for when they drafted the CBA.

So after a few days of refreshing twitter and HF.. it seems we are done?

Gorts and Jack Johnsson with the same smug smiles, knowing they wasted my time.

Meanwhile, Mika is heartbroken over Quickie and Hank departing.

Elliotte mentions on 31T that there are heavy rumors STL may file tampering charges on Vegas.

Going to be interesting if A) they can prove it, and B) Vegas was sloppy enough to get caught.

Because the reality is that every team does it through back door channels.

Anyone really believe players have enough time to look over all the details so quickly after being presented with an offer?

Right.

He mentioned the Islanders actually filed charges against Toronto on JT but nothing was found.

He DID that all his career until like 3-4 years ago.
I know! I was just saying or asking rather, does that style work with the up tempo style of Kreider? Datsyuk was another player who slowed things down but his tempo control was bonkers and he could lull you to sleep and then take a burst of speed to make an explosive play.
Does Jumbo not slow the play down anymore?

It's so obvious. Even when there was the opening before free agency, they weren't supposed to talk numbers. But they had deals the second it opened.

I wonder if AP's agent or even Alex himself made a comment at some point that they could get the bonus structure elsewhere, or if they gave an obvious tip off out of frustration.

Seems like Vegas isn't making friends anywhere right now.

I think Lias has every right to be pissed with how things went down here, especially with how they treated Howden when he really didn't deserve it, but you gotta just suck it up and keep it to yourself.

The pick was poisoned from the beginning, but maybe things will work in LA

I'm not losing sleep over what he said though

Nonsense but I won't AGAIN get into it.

In turn I do NOT care if things workout for him in LA. As one of the Rangers opponents in the league - I'd actually prefer if they didn't.

For all those thinking Howden got special treatment---the way I look at is that Howden outworked and outhustled Lias at almost every turn. Howden has also shown a greater willingness to do the unappreciated jobs necessary to make a team successful.

Yup, Howden did everything to help himself / make it difficult for coaches to take him out of the lineup. Lias did the opposite.

Will be very interesting in Vegas this season.

Listening to Hockey Central and Marek again reiterates he is hearing there are a number of unhappy guys in that locker room.
Will bet some that they miss the playoffs this upcoming season.

Sometimes you have a guy who is just happy to contribute in any way possible and is not going to carp or sulk about anything--who is going to do what he can to soak up everything in his environment. I've got the idea that Howden is like that.

But anyway Howden's 0.31 point production is not bad for a 4th liner. He's not a particularly strong player--I think that will get better in time.

I’d be very happy with Haula. I wouldn’t mind seeing it like this:

1. Kreider - Zibanejad - Buchnevich
Until Lafreniere pushes Kreider down or the KZB chemistry wears off, why mess with it?

2. Panarin - Chytil - Strome
Give Chytil a chance to step into a top six C role but keep Panarin and Strome together for the chemistry. If it doesn’t work you can flip Strome over to C and shift Chytil down, move Kakko up

3. Lafreniere - Haula - Kakko
Haula is a veteran for the two kids and gives Kakko a native linemate. Haul isn’t bad defensively so he can insulate them a bit. He also could have an outside shot of working with Panarin if we need a shakeup

4. Lemieux - Howden - Gauthier
The spare parts but if Howden keeps his hustle and work rate up and Gauthier uses his size more could get some mismatches and not be a bad 4th line

Smith - Trouba
Lindgren - Fox
Johnson - DeAngelo

Really just need to fix that LD.

Sorry guys but I was in Florida yesterday and gambled away (black instead of white-blue-red) Buchie, Howden, Gauthier, Kravtsov and defenders DeAngelo and Rykov and a few draft picks. Stamkos (the guy who betted against) looked five years younger coming out of the bubble.

ALL I got in return was Panarins drinking buddy (Kucherov) and Tampa Bay heavy headache Sergachev. MAN, were Tampa Bay GM relieved! And Cirelli and Cernak jumped from joy. Contracts! Contracts! Also let them (The GM there spoke only french and he didn't say his name and if he did I didn't understand what he said) do what they want with our non top 2 goalies (we might get Curtis McElhinney and his wife shopping for a few weekends) and unload Coburn or Schenn on our sorry asses if they wanted to.

[Clever Steve Urkel-style] - Does NOTHING with our cup run in 2021-22 which look like this:

Kreider - Chytil - UFA guy
Panarin - Zibanejad - Kucherov (the bear)
Lafreniere - Strome - Kakko
Lemieux - TBD - TBD

Sergachev - Trouba
Lindgren - Fox
Hajek - (Hot Shot via trade)

Shesterkin
Georgiev

And 18 month to prepare the playoffs roster

Now I have a problem. Tampa Bay mobsters want MORE for Kucherov and Serge! (In sleazy russian: "That's a very nice teddybear you're having there"). Those bastards don't know what cap space is with all the money flowing upwards I was thinking. And I'm not going out now, hidding with a view so to speak. I'm thinking YOU could take the heat and maybe make them happy. We take on a lot of salary and they complain. I say, Go out and buy a Bogosian or Kevorkian or two!

Just saw the JD and Gorts conference, good video. Shows you some of the sound logic and decision making. I will say that you can expect a 12-17% gross marginal improvement with Johnson over Smith/Staal based on last season at even strength. PK yes. Definitely a plus. This is not the JJ of LA. He stopped wandering out in the D-Zone there after the tail end of his time in CLB. In other words he's going to play. Net/net I would say JJ on his best day, and Staal on his worst would be a 25% improvement, but the goaltending in NY should be a lot better than DET, so I expect Staal to help continue their rebuild. The other thing is, you don't have to shelter those minutes in the same way.

Same with Rooney- Really liked that one. That's a good move. He's really effective defensively. The aggregate figures don't look good, but the Devils under Alain II started winning games and he was filling a good role. In other words, McKenzie Blackwood doesn't just become good over night. Goalies get hot and cold, but it helps when they have reliable minutes in front of them. Rangers PK was a good area to focus in on. It's funny I have a soft spot for Carter Rowney. It was the Rowney contract that made me look into finding undervalued players using data. I noticed it a year late, total anomaly, for a guy like that to land a deal like that... so there had to be a bidding war for him... why? Had to dig to find out.

I think with a younger team you have to simplify the team concept a bit to make the adjustment or learning curve easier for them to understand. Like utilizing an aerial pass to make a defenseman turn while creating a foot race, and guys recognizing and calling switches but keeping their eyes up and gesturing so that they can keep their sticks in the right position while still being able to communicate. That might be easier for them to learn the defensive zone a little more efficiently and learn how to put their teammates in positions to use their talents more effectively.

The Rangers sheltered both Staal and Smith, not easy to realize if you just look at ice-time. They got upgrades, even in Bitetto. I like Dunn as well. Logical choice... winning experience... right type of compete.... and yes he would make the team better... I'll take Dunn over DeAngelo on the current roster 10 out of 10 times. Not an easy trade to make if the dance partners aren't available.
