I mean I think a big part of it is also as Edge said the NHL (including the Rangers I'd guess) don't value DeAngelo quite as much as we do probably because of that defensive deficiency. I think if they didn't have Fox they'd absolutely be hanging onto him though.

I also feel like you're underselling Fox and what he did for some reason. A rookie on a 50 point pace with no 1st power play time is pretty nuts.

Ultimately if the Rangers are OK with moving DeAngelo I think they're seeing something in Fox that makes them think he can fill the same role but be a better player (plus he's younger and more cost controlled for the time being), they know they have Lundkvist in the wings, and they think they can fill some other roster holes that are in desperate need of filling

It's certainly a bit of a gamble but wait and see can also be wait and miss out
Sometimes the perception of a player is different than the reality. In Tony’s case, the perception hasn’t caught up with the reality. On the other hand, I’ve always felt the perception of Kreider has usually been greater than the reality (perhaps until this year) Old hockey rule...you know your own players better than anyone else. Use that to your advantage.

Just curious but couldn't they back-fill a bit with Lindholm? Honestly, from the Rangers perspective, I think they'd prefer Lindholm to Monahan

In a perfect world, yes Lindy would be the C but he’s been deployed as RW for majority of his time in Calgary.

Unless of course our front office is set on going that route, but even then.... Monahan as 2C or heck on the wing is still great for us. Our C depth has been shit for decades... very reluctant to move the C talent we have unless for significant upgrade at C. (In a package deal of course Monahan+)

Another guy that I would be surprised to see being moved.

The one player that I think would fit your team is Mikael Backlund. However, he is a couple of years too old based on what I’ve read in your thread. Outside of that, he’s solid 2way.

I like him as a 3rd line center but not a 2ed line center but is a good player.

Count me in on Hanifan for sure, I'm just not loving Monahan but I understand the need to trade from strength and back-fill with young talent. Honestly, it would seem that if Gorton went in another direction, say Vegas, he would be almost required to complete (2) trades. ADA to Vegas and then Buch somewhere else. And that assumes he can get a good young center from Vegas like Glass or Krebs + and a LD somewhere else.

So let's ask this question, what do people prefer:

ADA + _______ for Krebs + Tuch

Buch for Hanifan

OR

ADA + Buch for Hanifan + Monahan
Door #1 pls

Like Monahan as a player but have big concerns w fit within the NYR current roster construction. He's almost a pure shooter at C. Stylistically he's...a poor man's Zibanejad. Is that really what the NYR need long term? Does that mesh with Panarin or Laf? Strome as a RHS has a much easier time setting up a RHS Panarin on the left.

In a vacuum I'd welcome him but cost to acquire as well as opportunity cost (how else could those assets be used?) make me skittish.

I mean you could argue that our wings, and our future wings could make it a better fit than a pass-first type center.

Panarin and Zibanejad had good chemistry last year (though that can be somewhat easier to overlook because of Strome). But Lafreniere and Monahan is certainly an intriguing possibility when you look at both guys strengths and style.

But I do think it's okay if someone like Monahan, or Lindholm, or whoever is "only" a several year player for us. I honestly don't think that's inherently a bad thing, or something we should necessarily shy away from.

It's great when a guy plays 5 or 7 years with us, but the truth is that its the exception more than the rule --- especially when you get beyond "franchise" players.

Stepan got you 7 and DeAngelo not sure how Buch and 22 is even close to that.

It was Stepan and Raanta for ADA and the 7th in a draft that everyone knew had a drop off after 6.

Also, Stepan was 27 and signed for 4 more years, coming off of 6 consecutive 50+ point seasons (I’m including 44p/48g in 12/13).

Danault doesn’t have the same pedigree that Stepan had and is under contract for 1 more year.

I wouldn’t move Buch or the 22nd pick straight up for Danault.

I think it comes down to whether the Flames feel they need to make changes. If they do, then...well, players gotta go including guys you otherwise would say no to moving

Can't say "we need to make changes!" and then try to hold onto everyone on the team.

That said if they don't want to give up anyone tom ake those changes then they can try their luck in UFA or with lower level moves, just depends on what their management feel needs to happen

Heard from a friend...teams looking for an RHD who can move the puck are looking hard at DeAngelo and Dumba. Both of their teams are playing hard to get but they are in competition for with the same potential buyers.

Bidding war for DeAngelo!

Means we can do better than Monahan and Hanifin.
