If we are trading for Cirelli, we have to trade Strome somewhere else.

Yeah, aquiring Cirelli would be the end of Strome in New York. We might not get top doller for Strome, but he should atleast have some value. Getting a middle pair LD or the assets to aquire one from Strome and getting Cirelli wiuthout giving up anything bif from the rooster
should set up this team nice.
Say we trade Andersson, Barron, 22 for Cirelli

Kreider - Zinbadejad - Buchnevich
Panarin - Cirelli - Kakko
Lafrenier - Chytil - Gauthier
Lemiuex - Howden - Filler 4. liner for sub 1 million

Smith - Trouba
Lindgren - Fox
Filler LD - Deangelo

A bit unexperienced up front, but I believe we can give the young players the needed time.
All this with the following back-filling the comming years: Kravtsov, Lundkvist, Miller, Robertson etc.
As the "bacl-fillers" take their spots we can ship out some good but older players like Buch and Deangelo and recoup new prospects and picks to hopefully again backfill the rooster in some years.

Who else is younger, cheaper, left handed, same level/better and available?
Just because there isnt someone available right this second doesnt mean you should make a stupid decision. He is 29 years old and is looking at term of 6 or 7 years. He already publicly said he wouldnt give Boston a discount to stay. He wants to get paid.

Please just no. We arent one player away from cup contention. If we he had just lost in the ECF or the SCF then I’d be more amenable to this option

Can you kind folks explain to this simpleton that hasn't been following this why I keep hearing Calgary, Lindholm, and Hanifin?

Courtesy of @Edge. The Rangers and Flames have had a lot of discussions for a while now, and reportedly, both Lindholm and Hanifan have been asks from the Ranger side. (And they haven’t been rebuffed.). The Flames have expressed interest in Buchnevich, Hajek and Andersson.

@Edge had a lot of insight to this and other items a couple weekends ago. He basically covered every aspect of the organization from the intel he had.

And we had already been connecting dots with Calgary’s situation before that

So if the 20/21 season is shortened, i.e. 4-5 months instead of the grueling 8-9 months, the prospect of tanking it (gambling on it) is kind of interesting. If teams are in trouble financially and in relation to the cap today -- it will be worse next summer. On top of that, you got the expansion draft.

Why?
1. Look, there is really legit reasons for concern in relation to facing another crappy season that goes on for 8 months that basically could be over 3 weeks into it. We think its possible to be "patient" now, but it will never happen. Its a tough league for the kids. It will create all kinds of problems and challenges if we go through that again.

But a 4 months season? Its something else. I would be much less concerned about that.

2. I firmly believe that we can develop defenders en masse -- if we are willing to live with growing pains. Take Hajak for example. No matter what scenario occurs, if we can give him say 60 games in 20/21, I don't for a second doubt that he would be ready to play on a low end 2nd pairing role or 3rd pairing role in 21/22. The speed in which the play turns in the NHL along with how fast and hard you are pressured down low is unique and you can't really prepare for it before you get into the league. It is hard for many rookies to get to a level outside the NHL, that is so good that it is better than defenders already in the league. But if a kid is allowed to grow into it on the blueline -- that kid can definitely over the course of a season reach that level. My point is -- if we want to be sure to be able to take a step forward next season compared to this year, we need to strengthen the roster. We have already lost Skjei and Staal. Fast could be on the way out. Ziba and Panarin had fantastic years last year. If a kid is better but Zib/Pan are a bit less spectacular its a wash. But if we are willing to gamble we could definitely have three cheap capable LDs on the roster for 21/22.

3. In relation to a contact for a younger player, an investment today 9 out of 10 times pays off tomorrow. This could easily be shown by creating some kind of simplistic bang/buck index and map it against when contracts are signed. If we use the cap space we have this summer to lock-up the kids -- it will pay off. Just an example: A 3-4 year deal for Geo at a mil more could give him a completely different value on the trademarket in 1-2 years than he would have on a cheaper 1-2 year contract.

4. Many adds today cost us in the expansion draft. This does not have a big impact for me, because I think we are losing a good player no matter what.

-> Much was made of how Boston took advantage of being in a good spot after 05'. Gorton could put us in a really good spot for 21/22.

Because Calgary looks like its getting fed up with their core and might retool. Thats it really.

If you're best players only ply their full effort when they are getting a full paycheck... What happens when you pay this guy a front loaded bonus contract?

Otherwise players of Johnny's skill level don't get moved.

If you're going to trade for a star, or a potential star, you fleece an ownership group who needs to offload salary to sell their way out of financial trouble.

How much would Dillon get as a ufa LD and is that a bad idea long term ?

Do they sign DeAngelo or flip him is the big question IMO
I am all for Dillon so long as the deal is for 3-4 years and the cap hit is no more than $3.25 AAV. I have been fanning the flames of this idea for awhile now. I think he brings a different style, physical stay at home defenseman. Buys time for our other LD prospects to continue to develop with not a huge commitment to him

Of all the guys discussed for 2nd line, to me Danault is the best fit by far. He’s a great 5v5 player; very underrated. However the cost to obtain him + his salary requirements might be prohibitive.

I would have no problem sending Buchnevich and Hajek for Hanifin. He's got a good contract through 2024. He's got good size, wheels, he just has to put it together. I wouldn't give up Andersson. Lindholm same. Good contract thru 2024. Either one would be good options. I would assume with Staal out they would go for Hanifin. I still think the center they should target is Dovrak.

It depends on the language in the contract.
Staal's contract terms were debated for years. Brooks tried to get a handle on it by asking the agent and management. Even capfriendly had changes to the terms.

I saw one report that quoted Yzerman as saying Staal didn't waive for Detroit. Can't find it now but the article in the Post today has:
Staal, whose 892 regular-season games rank sixth in franchise history, owned a modified no-trade clause on which Detroit was not listed as off-limits, The Post has learned.

Brady Skjei 2.0
Jokes aside, Hanifin has been pretty disappointing.

Dougie Hamilton was considered pretty disappointing for a while. That doesn't mean that Hanifin will figure it out, but sometimes it takes a while, particularly for defensemen. I haven't watched him enough to really know, but if management thinks he can be a good compliment to Trouba on a shutdown pair, I'll take their word for it.

The problem with the speculation mostly from this board about lindholm is that, Calgary from what i hear is more interested in moving Gaudreau than him.

ADA and Strome both successful reclamation projects that worked I am thinking Hanafin is in that category.

Ottawa inquired about Strome, and the Rangers are listening. Putting everything together, if the Rangers can complete a deal for a 2C, (which can be inferred through the continued discussions with Calgary about Lindholm), then they would move Strome, probably for a couple of picks.

Be interested to see what Ottawa would offer. May be the #28?

If I remember correctly, NMC is so the team can't waive the player to the AHL or expose in a expansion draft. NTC clause is for actually being dealt.

Yeah, and it is not a standard clause, i.e. a box you check so that you get either a standard form NMC or NTC, it is drafted for each contract. The parameters are not endless, but for example in relation to the expansion draft we know that some NTCs could prevent a player from being exposed in it and that it was not a given that a NMC couldn't be exposed (I am not sure if any NMC ended up as exposable). Other differences are that on some limited NTC's, a list shall be supplied on demand of the team, and on others a list is like sent when the contract is signed and can then be amended once per year.

Normally a clause that prevents a player from being both traded, waived and demoted is labeled as a "NMC" and a clause that only prevents a player from being traded, but not waived or demoted, as a "NTC". But since its not a standard clause, its of course possible to for example have a clause that prevents a player from being waived or demoted but that allows the player to be traded to 30/15/5 other teams or whatever. You could also theoretically have a clause that prevents a player from being exposed in the expansion draft, but that allows for the players to be either waived/demoted/traded.

Is cirelli really good... Or does he just play for a really good team.

Like namestnikov before him.

I feel like a lot of the cirelli hype is based on his teammates. Could be wrong tho, wouldn't be the first time.

I'm lukewarm on cirelli.

not gonna say I watched him during the season but I’ve watched him every single game these playoffs and I would say he’s a good 3c. Would be very careful Giving up assets and money for him
