Just because he’s available doesn’t mean it’s the right kind of move for us given our needs, cap space, and kinky sexual desires.
“Intangibles”. I’m not saying Krug or bust. I’m saying they could do a lot worse .

I’m not giving DeAngelo a six year contract, period. I don’t trust his commitment and if I’m the Rangers I’m not making that kind of commitment. He’s under team control for three more years and I’m going to leverage that. I’ll give him two at $4MM and would consider going to four at $5 MM but I want to see a larger body of work before he goes big casino. He’s not going anywhere.

And there’s this... if I’m Tony, I’m not taking that deal anyway. I’d want much more.

Guys, it’s a whole new world out there. Money is going to be very tight the next few years. Contracts are going to be shorter and less rich. We need to adjust to that reality.

Minnesota and Montreal missed that memo with the Brodin and Petry contracts.

Because Calgary looks like its getting fed up with their core and might retool. Thats it really.

I thought there were Ranger specific rumors there. I looked up Lindholm and it looks like his 18-19 season was fantastic and last season was good but not as good. Would be a good 2nd line center that's young.

This is just such an unforseen move. We all have wanted it, but never thought it was something possible. The whole left side opens up a year early. Valuable experience that these young players will need is coming now.

UFA is not the way to address this. There are too many guys internally that can claim a role and learn. Hajek needs NHL time at some point. Miller is going to be here very soon. We'll never learn about these players if they sign someone.

You want to bring in a vet on a ~1M deal? I'm cool with that since it's not someone that you are tied deeply too. I feel like Smith can fill that role, but who knows if he'll be around. If Staal can get moved like this, Smith might be out the door next.

This officially feels like Gorton's roster. This past era was over a few years ago, but this feels like the 2nd to last nail in the coffin.
I don’t see a significant $ UFA coming in, but I could easily see either a) a trade for a vet or b) a signing that’s more like 2 years x $2-3MM. With Staal gone, that leaves the entire left side open, since you’re left with a kid coming off his rookie year and Smith on the last year of his bloated contract (though I’d expect Lindgren to keep his spot and DQ to use Smith as a buffer as needed). Plenty of room for another kid, or even 2, to make the squad. (And don’t forget, they’ll need a D under contract to expose next year...)

Hanafin has great pedigree but has not lived up to expectations. I have not watched him much. How does he compare to Skjei? Could Hanafin be a reclamation prospect? Good size and contract.

On twitter there's a video of Renaud Lavoie doing a french interview where he says that there actively shopping Gaudreau and he'll be moved by free agency. And Jimmy Hayes commenting on talks between Flyers and Flames for Johnny Hockey. Maybe Gorts is getting in on Gaudreau instead of Lindholm ? Flames need G,RD and wing...Georgiev,ADA and Pavel for Gaudreau ?

Panarin, Kreider and Laf on the LW. Our positional needs are in the middle and left side of the defense.

Exactly. There are a lot of players on Calgary that would be good fits for the Rangers, but Gaudreau is not high on the list. (Also, that offer is too much.)

In terms of forwards, Lindholm just makes so much sense for the team — good player, right age, excellent contract, plays both C and RW.

Gaudreau hasn't been a point of discussion the Rangers and Flames, (at least I don't recall @Edge confirming it.)

I dont know if others have talked about this, but my first thought on the extra cap space created by the Staal trade is that they would now be able to trade the Carolina 1st for someone making decent money.

Looking at TBL's capfriendly site, and something has to give there. They have 5,33 million in capspace and only 3(!) defencemen and 10 forwards signed. And that is with both Cirelli and Sergachev as RFA. With cash in short supply around the league it isnt that easy
for them to just dump Tyler Johnsen's contract either (4 more years at 5,0 million). Could see Gorton threaten with a 1.+3. offersheet to get TBL into talks, atleast for Cirelli.

No idea what Cirelli would cost. Andersson+22? Kravtsov? TBL can not take much salary back.

All of this just sounds like Gorton wants to keep Fast. Hard to imagine the wildly popular and respected home grown play the right way guy the coaches and management cited as being a critical absence in our 3 game series sweep would just be let go without earnest negotiations. Now that they have an extra $5.7M, more than any buyout could have managed, I think both Strome and Tony are staying plus some space to make Fast work.

How would you guys feel about a 6X6 extension for Tony right now...?

As long as it can be traded (no real NMC or NTC), I’m fine with it. Move him to the left or trade him when Lundkvist arrives.

Krug, no disappointment because that shouldnt happen.

Lindholm on the other hand, it would suck if we cannot get him but wouldnt be the end of the world either.

Seems like Lindholm is complete speculation on our part though.... would have a hard time saying “it would suck,” not to get a player we don’t even know if we are asking about.

I really like how the board is speculating all kinds of things and then we get these curveball deals like Skjei and Staal.
Granted Staal had to waive his NTC/NMC, so we stopped anticipating such a move, maybe like 1% of the board presented such proposals.

We turned

Staal + Skjei + 2021 2nd

into

ca. 11m in cap space, two roster spots (specially valuable with Staal gone), a 2020 1st and "future considerations".

This is magic imo!

I fully expect an ADA bridge deal and Strome deal with no extra clauses (sick and tired of them). Both of them have to cost us no more than 10m in cap space.

Fast is out to FA 100%?

The two-and-a-half-headed-goalie-monster still has to be solved.

So thinking out loud. Vegas is trying to shed salary for Pietrangelo. Stastny was identified as a candidate to go out. 1 year, $6.5m. A third of our available cap. What is the cost in assets? Not even sure I like the move but I am curious.

We will take him if they give us a second?

If we are trading for Cirelli, we have to trade Strome somewhere else.
