Honestly, this is just McKenzie reporting on what was said here a few weeks ago.

I don't think there are any conversations burning the midnight oil right now.

Im a bit surprised at the timing though. Maybe someone heard something a few weeks ago and then McKenzie heard something from someone post Staal Trade and decided to poke around here.

Moving him now after getting Staal would be super weird.

Legitimate Eichel rumors on a Monday afternoon? Count me in...

To me, this sounds like a situation where there was more than just a phone call and a polite decline on the other end. Bobby Mac isn't in the business of wasting everyone's time, nor his own reputation, on reporting things that happen to each team 100 times a year. If I had to guess, I think there was conversation or two had about selling price / buying price that resulted in both teams saying "if you change your mind, let us know." That's enough smoke around a player like Eichel to at least warrant reporting it and diffusing it in the same stretch of tweets. Tactfully done by Bob.

If there is truth to this (and I do think there is), the crux of it really centers around whether or not Eichel wants out. Unless he takes it public, Buffalo will never admit to it because it will cut their leverage off at the knees almost immediately. They're already at a disadvantage with his contract and the flat cap, and the fact that he has a NMC that kicks in after next season. So if he does want out, they'd be smart to do it sooner than later, and do so quietly. Those are all big IF's though.

We are, as a board on average, 2-6 weeks out on a lot of news items that get picked up.

In this case, I'd probably venture a guess that an agent dropped some info and it became too good not to at least put out there.

It would also be super Buffalo. They've been horribly ran for so long, and I'm not sure how much it changes under the Pegula's unless Adams is a smart guy.

I don't think Lafreniere is on the table for the Rangers. Probably Kakko isn't either.

Any other player not named Fox or Shesterkin? Possibly.
Vince speculated a package like

22, ‘21 1st, Kravtsov, Maybe Strome, and more.

I have to say that’s what I imagine an Eichel trade would look like.

that said it does seem like a long shot but we know Gorton. The dude is motivated and he moves with conviction. I wouldn’t put anything past him.

If the Rangers traded:

ADA
Strome
+ prospects/picks

And bought out Hank

They should have plenty of room to fit Eichel. What am I missing?

So say the deal is:

ADA + Howden + Andersson + Hajek + Georgiev + CAR 1st
for Eichel

Strome for (2) 2nd rounders from Ottawa

Panarin-Eichel-Kaako
Kreider-Zib-Buch
Lafreniere-Chytil-Gauthier
Lemieux-_____-_____

Smith-Trouba
Lindgren-Fox
Reunanen-_____

Shesty
_____

That leaves $8.16m in cap space?

That's with:
Lemieux @ $1.2m
Lafreniere at $3.75m

The 2nd year they would have a LOT of cap space when Hank's and Shattenkirk's buyouts drop.

Which makes complete sense if McKenzie was asking around regarding draft interests and caught wind of it. I think it's just the "Rangers called on him" part of it that threw everyone for a loop since we were all discussing it from the perspective of Buffalo inquiring about the #1 pick. Of course this is all a big game of telephone so it's impossible to tell what is quoted and what is 'interpreted' from sources. Especially in the context of McKenzie's tweets that read as, "Here's what they said to shut it down and I don't believe it."

Had this scenario play out in my head lying awake last night (as I do so often with the world burning down around us these days):

Dorion calls Gorton:
D: So, about that interest I expressed in Strome...
G: Yes?
D: What if we combine that idea with my earlier offer for the 1OA?
G: You’re willing to up your offer of the 3OA plus Tkachuk if I include Strome?
D: Exactly.
G: Honestly, Pierre, the only way I move the 1OA is if that add is Chabot.
D: Thought you might say that. But listen, even with Strome added, that’s too much. I’d be giving you you’re first pair left D at 23 years old and locked up long term. I can do it, but I’ll need another piece — one of your left D prospects.
G: Okay, I hear you. Depending on whom you want, we might be able to work something out. Miller and Robertson are off the table, but I’m willing to discuss anyone else.
D: How about the kid from UMass, Jones?
G: I’m reluctant, Pierre. The kid had a first year in the NCAAs that was reminiscent of Fox. But... if you took Smith as well, then I might be open to it.
D: You just paid Stevie a 2nd to take Staal!
G: Yes, but Smith is younger, cheaper, and more versatile. You’ll get more for him at the deadline.
D: Tell ya what, Jeff, remember that deal we discussed a while back for Georgiev where we got hung up because you wanted a second second round pick and I wasn’t willing to go higher than one?
G: Yeah?
D: You add Georgiev and I’ll give you my best second rounder next year.
G: Hmm... let me talk it over with my people. [Pause.] Okay, Pierre, you have a deal.

To NYR:
3OA
Tkachuk
Chabot
OTT’s highest 2nd rd pick in 2021.

To OTT:
1OA
Strome
Georgiev
Jones
Smith

Sign ADA to one of the variants on a 2- or 4-year deal we’ve been discussing, sign Lemieux to something close to his QO, Hank retries or is bought out, sign Talbot (or someone similar) to a 2-year, sub-$2MM AAV deal, sign a vet insurance left D for something similar.

Tkachuk-Zibanejad-Buchnevich
Panarin-Byfield/Stutzle-Kakko
Kreider-Chytil-Kravtsov
Lemieux/Barron-Howden-Gauthier

Chabot-Trouba
Lindgren-Fox
Miller/Robertson/Reunanen/vet-ADA

Shesterkin
Talbot (or other vet)

Too big a deal to happen in the current environment, I’m sure, and there’s always the “you don’t want to be the guy who traded away the superstar” factor, which would probably doom it anyway, but these are the sorts of things that go through my mind when I can’t sleep.

I would include Chytil and ADA/Lundkvist in those talks.

I would probably remove Strome, as I think he would be someone the team would the Rangers would package to re-coup picks.

I would expect Zibanejad's name to come up, but if he doesn't, I wouldn't assume Eichel equates with Z's immediate departure.

I'd be shocked if there was no Nils in an Eichel trade. They'd have to include him to not include Kakko/Laf IMO.

Buffalo definitely reached out again after the Rangers won the lottery. Could the Rangers have pinged them first back in the spring? Yeah, that's possible.

Why would Bob even bother? Why make a 4 tweet thread over absolutely nothing? How does that benefit anybody? I'm not talking about the NYR part, more the Eichel wants out part. I think Eichel wants out, even if it's not being publicly flaunted the way Trouba did. Maybe not this offseason, but if Buffalo doesn't make serious improvements next season, I have a hard time believing Eichel will still be in Buffalo in 2 years.
