Getting Eichel would almost certainly cost one of Kakko or Laf. I 100% wouldn’t do that.

Yeah, Lafreniere is off the table.

To my mind, so is Kakko.

If that means no deal, fine, they can keep him.

But if it's a situation where they have decided to trade him, and we just have to make the best offer, I'm not so sure we can't do that even if we exclude those two names.

I think it can work. Zib is in line for a huge raise after this $5.35M contract ends. Our window opens when Zib's contract ends. Buffalo can stay relevant with Zib as their 1C, flip him for a big return of firsts plus A prospects if they do it with 2 years left on his deal. We can add in a player that would need a big RFA contract. Mika, 2021 1st, Kravstov, and something else, either a roster player or another prospect.

The more interesting scenario here is how we can acquire that 8th overall pick since Buffalo wants to get better "sooner rather than later."

We have vets that can play a first or second line that we don't really need long term, despite some posters' insistence.

For Lundell, I'm willing to suffer a year with a hole in my top 6.

If the cost was just Mika plus picks, then that is not abandoning what we are doing.

The abandonment would be if the cost was Chytil, Kravtsov, DeAngelo, 22, and a top prospect like Nils. That becomes a no for me. It strips the team's future cupboard too bare.

Mika, 22, and next year's first? Cool.
I’m thinking the plus plus would be a fox and first rounder. I’m just saying it’s gonna hurt or Buffalo is idiotic.
Of course if it was just Mika and prospect it wouldn’t totally abandon what we are doing cause Eichel is still very young and on a good deal. Some may say a deal that Mika might be looking for in couple years

Land of no calls..
Kessel isn't Jack Eichel. Never was. He got put on that line because he found insane chemistry with Hags and Bonino because of the speed on the flanks. You're also not paying each of those guys north of $10M to play on the 3rd line. Kessel wasn't getting $10M+.

You're not paying all 3 of them $10m period. You get Eichel and Zibanejad is a goner before he gets a new contract.

If you're trying to draw an exact comparison you're not getting it. The "3rd line" here is irrelevant. You have 3 "first lines" and a 4th line that gets 7-8 minutes a night. Coaches love being able to spread the talent out across their lineup.

I know some people will scoff at this (especially outside of this board) but ADA is a really solid first piece in an Eichel deal that many teams would be hard pressed to match. Who else can afford to shuttle out a player who just had the kind of season he did with multiple RFA years remaining? I'd have to imagine that in the vast majority of orgs around the league ADA would be viewed as near untouchable right now.

Can we try bringing in some winning players for once instead of guys who just lose? Where were we on Hornqvist? Multiple time champion. What about Toffoli? We need guys who know what it takes.

Those are the guys you get when you have the talent already.

We are nearing that point, but I don't see the need this second, in an offseason where we are tight against the cap for putting the final pieces on the rebuild (need a future top center and LD still).

If they're really disappointed with Kakko's rookie season behind the scenes, or if they don't ever want to pay Shesty in the same universe as they paid Lundqvist because of the effects that has on roster construction, then yeah, I can see them being on the table for something crazy. Could be huge, huge mistakes! But I guess there's some kind of logic there.

Laf, maybe not. But Kakko, you have to consider it. Eichel is a definite #1C and will be turning 24 at the end of the month. He is what the Rangers hope Kakko can be — at a more valuable position. He also has a history with Quinn.

Well again, he's better so he is an upgrade alone. Zibanejad's not going to get more, but the team is going to have to pay Kakko, Fox, and Lafreniere too

Assuming that's true, then we would have to trade someone/something in addition to Zibanejad. Eichel's cap hit is almost twice as much as Zib's, as well. So any deal for Eichel is likely to leave us with less depth and/or less cap space.

But hey, let's load up on 10 mil forwards, because that strategy has worked so well for Toronto.

If Zibanejad is anything remotely close to this year, a 40-40 guy that kills penalties and is a 3-zone player, I don't see how he's a goner, especially if the Rangers do choose to name a Zibanejad the captain.

I just don’t see how Eichel has that level of value.

great player but there’s zero chance any team would trade a first overall pick for him.

Neither do I.

I respect @Edge and his information greatly, but I don't buy this at all. If he wants out (maybe he doesn't, but it sounds like he does) he'll never return fair value for Buffalo.

They get picks, they'll get some good prospects, a strong roster player or 2, but this idea that they'll get some franchise defining talent is silly. Teams don't trade those guys unless they have to.
